Starshine Chronicles: The Exiled Heir

Chapter 10: The First Trial (Chapter -10)

The Grand Hall of Ethereon Academy was a masterpiece of architecture—a vast chamber with crystalline walls that refracted light into dazzling rainbows. Rows of chairs stretched across the floor, filled with first-year students buzzing with anticipation. Denver found a seat near the middle, Astrael's subtle energy pulsing within him, a comforting reminder of their bond.

The headmaster, an imposing figure with a long silver beard and a flowing robe adorned with the phoenix emblem, stood at the podium. His presence commanded silence as he raised a hand.

"Welcome, new students, to Ethereon Academy," he began, his voice resonating with a mix of authority and warmth. "You are here because you have shown promise—a spark of potential that sets you apart. But potential alone is not enough. Here, you will be tested, challenged, and pushed to your limits. Only then will you uncover the true depth of your bond with your spirit."

Denver leaned forward, absorbing every word. The headmaster's speech set the tone for what was to come—this wasn't just about learning; it was about transformation.

"As a rite of passage," the headmaster continued, "you will face your first trial today. This trial will determine your aptitude, resilience, and connection with your bonded spirit. Failure does not mean the end, but success will pave your path forward."

A murmur spread through the hall as students exchanged nervous glances. Denver's heart raced—he hadn't expected to be tested on his very first day.

"Report to the Trial Grounds immediately after this assembly," the headmaster concluded. "Good luck. And remember, the phoenix rises from the ashes."

The students filed out of the Grand Hall, following glowing markers that led them to an open arena at the academy's edge. The Trial Grounds were a circular expanse surrounded by shimmering barriers, designed to protect both participants and spectators. In the center stood several faculty members, each holding a clipboard and flanked by assistants.

One of the faculty members stepped forward, her sharp eyes scanning the crowd. "When your name is called, step into the arena. You will face a simulated challenge designed to test your combat skills, strategic thinking, and spirit synchronization."

Denver clenched his fists, excitement and nerves warring within him. His name was eventually called, and he stepped into the arena, Astrael materializing beside him in a brilliant flash of light.

The simulation began, the barriers around him shifting to create a realistic forest environment. Shapes flickered in the shadows—phantom enemies armed with weapons, advancing toward him with calculated precision.

the world around him shifting into a dense, shadowed forest. With a flash of light, Astrael emerged beside him—a formidable dragon with sleek silver scales that shimmered like liquid light. His serpentine body glided with grace, and his wings arched high, crackling with latent energy. The air vibrated with the sheer power of his presence.

Denver placed a steadying hand on Astrael's side. "Ready for this?"

Astrael let out a low rumble, smoke curling from his nostrils. His glowing blue eyes scanned the forest as faint growls echoed through the trees. The first challenge had arrived.

Two Dusk Creepers darted out from the foliage, their shadowy bodies shifting unnaturally as they moved. One leapt toward Denver with a flash of claws, but Astrael reacted swiftly, his tail whipping through the air with a resounding crack. The first Creeper was struck mid-leap, slamming into a tree and dissolving into mist.

The second Creeper teleported using Shadow Leap, reappearing directly behind Denver. Its claws grazed his shoulder before Astrael unleashed Celestial Flame, engulfing the creature in a swirling vortex of blue fire. The Creeper screeched as it disintegrated into nothingness.

Denver let out a breath, rolling his shoulder to shake off the sting of the attack. "We handled that, but something bigger's coming," he muttered to Astrael, his eyes scanning the forest.

The ground trembled beneath their feet, and a guttural roar shattered the quiet. From the shadows emerged a colossal beast, its iron-plated body reflecting the faint light filtering through the trees.

Denver stood firm as the colossal Ironhide Ravager roared in defiance, its iron plates gleaming in the simulated sunlight. Beside him, Astrael spread his wings wide, crackling with electricity as faint currents of wind coiled around his sleek, silver-scaled body.

The Ironhide Ravager roared, charging forward with Iron Charge, its massive body kicking up dirt and debris. Denver shouted, "Astrael, evade and counter!"

With a flick of his mighty wings, Astrael activated Aetherial Agility, his form becoming a silver blur as he dodged the Ravager's assault. The beast missed its target and collided with a large boulder, sending shards of rock flying in every direction.

Now airborne, Astrael's eyes glowed bright blue as electricity crackled across his body. "Gale Tempest!" Denver commanded. Astrael roared, summoning a swirling cyclone infused with lightning. The winds howled as they surrounded the Ravager, lifting it off balance and leaving its exposed underbelly vulnerable.

"Go for the weak spot!" Denver shouted.

Astrael responded with Thunderclap Strike, releasing a massive bolt of lightning that struck the Ravager's underside. The beast roared in pain, its HP dropping rapidly to 120/200. The shockwave left the creature momentarily stunned, unable to retaliate.

Regaining its composure, the Ravager slammed its massive claws into the ground, activating Spiked Quake. Jagged stone spikes erupted around it, forcing Denver to roll away and Astrael to ascend higher.

Denver analyzed the Ravager's movements. "It's going into Rage Surge soon. Astrael, we need to hit it hard before it powers up!"

The Ravager's HP dipped to 100/200, triggering Rage Surge. Its muscles bulged, and its attacks became faster and more ferocious. The creature leapt into the air—a surprising burst of agility—and swiped at Astrael. The dragon twisted mid-flight, narrowly avoiding the attack, though a claw grazed his side, leaving faint marks on his silver scales.

"Astrael, end it with Storm Barrage!" Denver shouted.

Astrael's wings crackled with energy as storm clouds gathered above the arena. With a mighty roar, he unleashed Storm Barrage, raining down a relentless assault of lightning bolts. Each strike battered the Ravager, cracking its iron-plated armor and reducing its HP to 10/200.

Denver seized the moment, charging forward with his dagger glowing faintly from the bond energy shared with Astrael. With a single, precise thrust, he pierced the exposed weak point under the Ravager's belly. The beast let out one final, thunderous roar before collapsing, its body dissolving into mist.

The simulation faded, returning Denver and Astrael to the Trial Grounds arena. Astrael landed gracefully beside Denver, his silver scales shimmering faintly as he folded his wings. The audience of faculty members and observing students erupted into cheers and murmurs of amazement.

The faculty member overseeing the trial stepped forward, her expression a mix of pride and intrigue. "Your bond with Astrael is remarkable, Mr. Albright. The coordination and mastery you displayed are well beyond expectations. You've passed with distinction."

Denver glanced up at Astrael, a small smile tugging at his lips. He placed a hand on the dragon's muzzle, feeling the warm energy pulsing beneath his scales. "We did it, Astrael," he said softly.

The dragon rumbled in agreement, his glowing eyes reflecting the determination and strength of their bond. Together, they walked out of the arena, knowing that this was just the first step in their journey at Ethereon Academy.
