Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Annihilation of the Broodship Fleet
"Finally found you," Feng Mo murmured, his voice carrying a hint of satisfaction.
"Lock onto the enemy flagship and fire the quasi-T5 star destroyer cannon!"
As soon as the words left Feng Mo's mouth, the Hurricane's prow lit up with a brilliant orange glow, as a charged energy beam shot toward the broodship fleet's flagship. Sensing the enormous energy surge, the flagship's bio-field rippled violently, and surrounding broodships moved in to shield it, unleashing a barrage of bio-plasma in a desperate attempt to intercept the oncoming blast.
But it was futile. The flagship continued its defense, with three T4 broodships positioning themselves in the beam's path. The orange energy beam tore through two of them before dissipating against the third, finally draining its energy.
Watching from the radar display, Feng Mo smirked. "Interesting," he thought. "Does this little thing have an independent will? Or is it an extension of the Hive Mind itself?"
Rumors abounded that the entire insectoid species was directed by a singular Hive Mind. The Federation had long hypothesized that controlling the Hive Mind would mean dominion over the entire insectoid species. But even after decades of research, they'd achieved nothing concrete—the Hive was too heavily fortified, defended by swarms of T5 broodships that repelled even the strongest Federation forces.
Feng Mo pushed these thoughts aside, refocusing on the battle. The Firestorm Fleet was steadily pushing forward, tearing through the broodships with their relentless assault. Fifty T4 Blade and Shield frigates dove into the swarm, working in pairs to tear apart broodship after broodship. Following the Hurricane's blast and the bombardment from the ten T4 Kangaroos and two thousand missiles, the broodship fleet had dwindled to just over a thousand vessels. At that moment, a message from the Mello sisters came through on the Hurricane's control console.
"Commander, T4 Scorpions resupplied and en route to the battlefield. Awaiting orders!"
Feng Mo glanced at the radar display, noting the remaining cluster of red markers. "Deploy the T4 Scorpions for a decapitation strike. Locate the flagship and neutralize it. Take out any remaining T4 broodships with precision targeting."
"Aye, Commander!" the Mello sisters responded. The four T4 Scorpions immediately entered stealth mode and slipped into the heart of the broodship fleet.
"Ai Er," Feng Mo continued, "have the drones join the action. Let's wrap this up. I have a bad feeling about this one."
"Understood, Commander." Ai Er activated the drone swarm, dispatching nine hundred drones that had just been resupplied, targeting every broodship within range.
With the Boxers emptied of their ammunition, Feng Mo ordered them back for resupply. Another five thousand missiles would've put a serious dent in the fleet's resources, and Feng Mo wasn't willing to risk it for a single engagement.
As the Firestorm Fleet prepared for the final assault, not far from Z043, another battle was unfolding near Z012. A T4 fleet of over three hundred starships was locked in combat with a swarm of more than two thousand broodships. This was a conventional fleet, with only one specialized ship—a T4 carrier as its flagship, supported by a substantial number of destroyers and frigates. But even with their superior technology, the fleet was at a severe disadvantage, outnumbered nearly seven to one.
"Calling Xuanwu Star Fortress and Northern Sky Gate Station! Z012 is under heavy assault by broodships. Requesting immediate reinforcements from both stations!"
The distress calls went out repeatedly, but the Northern Sky Gate was already stretched thin. The insectoids' assault on the northern sector was unprecedented in scale, tying down the three T5 fleets at Xuanwu and harrying the thirteen T4 fleets on the secondary defensive line.
It seemed that only a large-scale strike force, like the ten T5 fleets of past campaigns, could truly push the insectoids back to their Hive.
With the arrival of the four T4 Scorpion stealth bombers, the battlefield turned into a one-sided massacre. The Scorpions systematically targeted and took out T4 broodships, while the ten T4 Kangaroos picked off the T3 broodships, reducing them to smoldering wreckage one by one. The T2 and T1 broodships were left to the Blade and Shield frigates, whose thick shields absorbed the bio-plasma with minimal impact.
In this lopsided battle, the broodship flagship grew increasingly desperate. It was the only insectoid ship with intelligence, orchestrating the swarm's tactics.
"Radar has re-locked on the broodship flagship's position. Auto-targeting is set. Awaiting orders!"
With the flagship once more in their sights, Feng Mo wasted no time.
"Prepare the quasi-T5 star destroyer cannon. Fire without delay!"
The Hurricane's prow cannon began charging, orange light pulsing and consolidating into an intense ball of energy. Moments later, the sphere burst into a piercing beam aimed directly at the enemy flagship.
Even sensing the impending doom, the flagship had no broodships left to shield it. The orange beam punched through its bio-field with ease, cleaving straight through the vessel and triggering a catastrophic secondary explosion.
Each time Feng Mo unleashed the star destroyer cannon, a thought crossed his mind: if only he could replicate this technology and integrate it into the Federation's databanks. But he knew that would remain just a dream.
