Star vs. the Forces of Evil : Marco Diaz The Conquest Devil

Chapter : Chapter 0: The Powers of a Devil in Chainsaw Man and the Abilities of the Conquest Devil

General Explanation

Devils: Devils are a race of supernatural entities that appear throughout the world of Chainsaw Man. They are creatures that feed on humanity's fears.

[Author's Note: It's not just humans—they also grow stronger from the fear of other devils. So, in this fanfic, any intelligent life form capable of feeling fear can make Marco more powerful.]

Origin and Characteristics

Devils are born in Hell.

Each devil is born with a "name" that corresponds to a concept and determines their powers. These names range from very tangible (e.g., Fish, Tomato) to entirely abstract (e.g., Future, Curse).

A devil's concept does not need to refer to something that exists. For instance, while ghosts, zombies, or angels might not exist in the Chainsaw Man universe, these names still correspond to specific devils.

Each name is unique to its respective devil, although some overlap based on specificity can occur (e.g., both a War Devil and a Second World War Devil exist).

Devils manifest according to the collective consciousness surrounding their names. For example, the Gun Devil seems to be composed of firearms and possesses gun-related abilities.

Devils embody the fear represented by their "name," and as long as that name inspires fear, they continue to reincarnate after "death."

A devil's name doesn't have to be inherently frightening; its power depends on how fear-inducing the concept is in the popular consciousness. For instance, cars aren't inherently scary, but Makima (the former Control Devil) notes that a Car Devil could be powerful due to the fear of car accidents.

Another example is the Blood Devil: most people aren't afraid of blood itself, but they fear the violent imagery and danger associated with it.

Important Note:

• Devils who die in Hell reappear in the human world, and those who die in the human world reappear in Hell.

• Devils cannot retain memories of their previous lives, and their personalities reset upon reincarnation.

• Despite their ability to reincarnate, devils aren't truly immortal. If humanity completely forgets the concept associated with a devil, that devil ceases to exist entirely.

According to the Angel Devil, he and other devils in the Special Division 4 remember the sound of the Chainsaw Devil's engine roaring before dying in Hell.

Physiology

The appearance and physiology of devils vary greatly, as their forms are influenced by the "name" they embody.

Most devils possess human-like features such as limbs, faces, bones, and other body parts. For instance, the Snake Devil's mouth is made of intertwined human arms. Even devils like the Tomato Devil and Grape Devil, based on plants, have human eyes and limbs.

However, other devils, like the Fox Devil or Octopus Devil, lack human-like characteristics (at least in the parts of their forms we've seen).

Devils do not reproduce like most organisms; they simply "appear" in Hell. The criteria for a devil's birth, if any, are unknown.

Because of their nature, devils typically don't have familial relationships. However, more powerful devils may refer to others as their children. For instance, Yoru refers to the Gun Devil and Tank Devil as her "children," likely because guns and tanks are war-related weapons.

It's unclear if Yoru (War Devil) considers them her children due to their connection to war or if she directly created them.

Human-like Forms:

Friendly or human-aligned devils tend to take on very humanoid appearances. Some are indistinguishable from humans (e.g., Makima, the Control Devil), except for subtle clues. However, non-humanoid devils, like the Fox Devil, can also be friendly.

Feeding Habits

Devils primarily feed on the blood and fear of humans but can survive by drinking the blood of other beings, such as demons and other devils.

While fear makes devils stronger, consuming blood heals their injuries and boosts their power.

This means that consuming humans isn't just an instinctual hatred but is often essential for their survival.

Although devils can eat other foods (e.g., fruits, vegetables), most refuse to do so because these won't heal their wounds or make them stronger.

Additional Notes:

• Devils don't appear to die of old age and can live indefinitely unless killed by external factors.

• The second incarnation of the Control Devil (Makima's reincarnation) first appeared as a small child but grew significantly over the following year, suggesting devils can age.

[Author's Note: Yes, Marco will grow rapidly until adulthood.]

Fragments of Devils

Devils, as demonstrated by the Gun Devil, can be fragmented into multiple pieces of flesh.

A fragmented devil may not be able to reincarnate until all their pieces (or their core) are destroyed.

Consuming fragments of a powerful devil grants significant strength to the consumer, whether they're a devil or a human.

[Author's Note: This is true for devils. I'm not entirely sure about humans.]

Interactions with Humans

Most devils are hostile toward humans, driven by their need to feed on blood and fear. However, some devils form contracts with humans, allowing humans to borrow their power in exchange for sacrifices (e.g., body parts).

Other devils integrate into human society as devil hunters, using their earnings to buy food.

In general, the more human-like a devil's appearance, the more likely they are to behave amicably.

Legal and Social Context:

Devils have no human rights. This means there are no legal repercussions for killing them, and some are forced to help humans out of fear rather than genuine willingness.

Although rare, emotional bonds—and even romantic relationships—can form between humans and devils.

Primitive Devils

Primitive Fear Devils:

These devils embody humanity's most instinctive fears, such as darkness, falling, or aging.

Described as "transcendent beings," they inspire fear even in other devils and demons.

Having never experienced the typical cycle of death and rebirth due to their immense power, primitive fear devils have retained their identities throughout human history.

[Author's Note: Since they've never "died," they've never lost their memories.]

Currently, three Primitive Devils have been introduced (Darkness, Falling, and Aging), and one has been named: the Death Devil (one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Marco's older sibling).

While the Devil of Darkness was encountered in Hell, the Falling Devil manifested on Earth according to Nostradamus' prophecy as "the first of the Devils who will guide the world toward Ultimate Terror."

Upon her arrival, she proved to be terrifying enough to send the War Devil (a member of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but she was weakened) fleeing at the mere sight of her, while claiming that at this moment, humanity has no means of attack that could potentially kill her.

Her mere presence turned out to be a threat to the world because, even though she only operated in Japan, she caused destruction all over the planet.

However, the Falling Devil was actually controlled by the Devil of Famine (another Horseman of the Apocalypse), with the goal of weakening and bringing the War Devil under her control.

The Aging Devil is shown to be on good terms with the Japanese Public Safety and has formed Contracts with Devil Hunters.

Nayuta (the Devil of Control after Makima) eventually revealed that the Grand King of Terror is the eldest of the Four Horsemen and the most powerful Devil in existence: the Devil of Death, who embodies "Ultimate Terror" in the human mind.

However, despite their immense power, the Devils of Primal Fear are neither untouchable nor above each Devil (or at least the threat of falling under the influence of another Devil), as it was revealed that the Falling Devil worked for and under the control of the Devil of Famine (a Horseman of the Apocalypse).

[Author's Note: So yes, if Marco plays his cards right, he could confront and control a devil tied to a primal fear.]

Demons

Demons or Fiends or people possessed by Devils:

They are Devils who have possessed a corpse.

Fiends are significantly weaker than their Devil counterparts, and they can only use attenuated versions of their respective supernatural abilities.

They can regenerate by drinking blood and draw strength from it, but unlike Hybrids, they can die if mortally wounded.

Some Fiends can temporarily transform into their Devil form. They are also incapable of executing contracts unlike Devils and humans.

Hybrids

Hybrids have a human consciousness and appearance but can transform into Devil-Human hybrids and manifest the supernatural abilities of the fused Devil.

The official name for Hybrids was erased by the Chainsaw Devil, yet Hybrids continue to exist despite their erasure for unknown reasons.

Hybrids are capable of transforming into their hybrid form through a bodily trigger.

Their regenerative abilities are nearly limitless, and they can revive if there is an adequate amount of blood to consume.

According to Makima, this type of Devil is very rare to see, even among themselves, and most people have only heard rumors about their existence, to the point that even Aki Hayakawa (a professional Devil Hunter) never thought they existed.

General Abilities (Racial):

Fear Power:

All Devils are born with a "name" that ties them to a concept. Devils feed on the fear that humans and other creatures have of this concept, drawing their power from it.

For this reason, a Devil's power is deeply linked to how humans perceive the concept and the visual images their "name" inspires.

The more fear associated with a "name," the more powerful the Devil that possesses it becomes.

An example provided by Makima is how a car Devil would be stronger than a coffee Devil, as cars evoke the mental image of being crushed and dying, while coffee evokes no frightening ideas; another example is the chicken Devil, which is so weak that it was kept as a pet in a high school and killed when a student stepped on it.

The fear that humans have of Devils in general is also a source of power they can use, as it was stated that after the attack by the Armed Devil, Devils became stronger because people feared them more in general.

Devils can also feed on the fear that other Devils have of them, with the Chainsaw Devil managing to become extremely strong by using the fear of other Devils as a source of power.

Blood Consumption:

All Devils can consume the blood of other creatures to heal their wounds, and it is also implied that Devils can become more powerful by consuming blood.

While all Devils can consume blood to quickly regenerate, powerful Devils have shown better regeneration.

Hybrids and other powerful Devils, such as the Gun Devil and the Darkness Devil, have very powerful healing factors.

A Devil's flesh or blood can be given to other creatures, making them stronger and even granting them the Devil's ability they ate.

However, this only works if the flesh/blood they consumed comes from a still-living Devil, as Denji did not become more powerful or gain control of the Devil's ability after consuming Makima's entire body (which looks perfectly human…).

Contract Creation:

All Devils can make contracts with humans, allowing humans to borrow part of their power in exchange for a sacrifice they deem appropriate.

However, Demons are unable to execute contracts, and Devils are unable to execute contracts with each other (except for the exception of the Devil of Control).

Possession of Corpses:

All Devils can also possess human corpses. In most cases, this results in the creation of a Demon, although in rare cases, it could result in the creation of a Hybrid under certain circumstances.

There is also the fact that the personality of the Demon may reflect that of the corpse if the brain is still intact, as shown by the polite and gentle attitude of the Violence Devil.

In these scenarios, the Devil can also retain some memories of the body it took over. In rare cases, Devils may deliberately want to keep the personality of the possessed corpse, thereby reviving it and occasionally taking on its personality.

The only known example of this phenomenon is that of the War Devil, who took control of Asa Mitaka's body while keeping her ego intact.

Reincarnation:

Another ability common to all Devils is reincarnation: when a Devil dies, it reincarnates in Hell; when it dies in Hell, it reincarnates on Earth.

This ability makes them practically immortal. However, with each reincarnation, their memories and personality are reset, making them completely different individuals from their previous incarnation.

However, if the concept a Devil embodies is forgotten by humanity, they are unable to reincarnate and cease to exist.

Body Power Augmentation:

It is said that a Devil or a human of any power can have their abilities increased if they eat the flesh of a very powerful Devil, regardless of their original strength level.

Some examples include the many Devils who became stronger by eating the flesh of the Armed Devil, Santa Claus becoming a very powerful abomination after consuming the flesh of the Darkness Devil, and Power returning to her full Devil form after eating a little of Pochita.

Unique Abilities:

Devils can also possess other supernatural abilities correlated with their name.

The conditions and effects of each supernatural ability are unique to the respective Devil. Using these abilities generally consumes some of their blood.

While each Devil has its own abilities, they can be common between different Devils or Demons, such as the manipulation of the "unknown force" used by the Control Devil and the Darkness Devil or intangibility used by the Spider Devil and the Shark Demon. According to Aki, a Devil's abilities are nullified upon death.

Sometimes, a Devil's natural ability or special capability does not always align perfectly with what their concept represents or at least does not represent an instantly recognized trait with the concept.

The reason might be that a more powerful Devil can access more abilities, like how the Snake Devil barely uses traditional snake attack methods, like venom, but has shown "tricks" like consuming another Devil to have it fight by its side. But this does not always apply, especially to powerful Devils.

Racial Weakness:

Positive Emotions:

Just as fear can make a Devil stronger, positive emotions can make a Devil weaker. When a large group of humans develops love or admiration for a Devil, these emotions will begin to erode the Devil's strength, making them weaker.

Forgotten Concept:

If a Devil's concept is often forgotten, ignored, or less thought of, it becomes much less feared and may even cease to exist.

Control Devil's Abilities (Marco inherited those from Makima and Nayuta):

Physical Abilities

Immense Strength: Makima possesses great physical strength, allowing her to fight effectively in hand-to-hand combat without relying on any of her subordinates under contract with her.

Her strength was great enough to overwhelm Pochita's weakened form and break his chainsaws with her strikes.

Enhanced Smell: According to Denji, Makima differentiates others primarily by scent.

During their first meeting, she was able to detect that Pochita still existed within Denji through his smell.

However, she cannot differentiate humans by sight in the same way that humans cannot differentiate dogs by their face alone.

Supernatural Abilities

Control: As Makima embodies the fear of control or conquest/domination, her main ability reflects this nature.

Besides her Machiavellian tendencies, Makima possesses the power to directly control those she deems inferior to herself, thus declaring: "I have the power to control those I consider lower than myself."

This "brainwashing" ability works on any being—humans, animals, Devils, Demons, and Hybrids—and it has not been shown to have a limit to the number of subjects it can keep under control at once.

It seems that once placed under her control, a victim loses all memory of what happened just before being controlled and everything they did while under control.

Makima can channel the power of her victims by summoning them through chains connected to her body.

It has been shown that she can use the abilities of the Angel Devil, the Future Devil ,The Devil Snake, the Devil of Punishment, the Devil Spider, and the Devil Zombie.

Even deceased people can be controlled in this way. Makima was able to form a squad of Weapon Hybrids, three of whom (Reze, Quanxi, and Katana Man) were former enemies who now acted affectionately towards her.

This suggests that Makima can directly control individuals and subtly alter their personalities.

However, Makima's control can be broken, as seen with the Angel Devil.

She uses the hearing of rats, birds, and other small animals she controls to overhear conversations from a distance, seemingly anywhere on the planet, possibly even extending to Hell itself (another dimension, and yes, she was able to know where Denji was in Hell thanks to a subordinate).

She was able to eavesdrop on Denji and Reze's conversation and listened in on Kishibe's conversation with Quanxi.

This ability can be bypassed by communicating non-verbally, such as writing on a piece of paper.

It was demonstrated that she controlled a large number of rats, which allowed her to move by using them. These rats could then group together to form the shape of a human, enabling Makima to be instantly transported to that location.

Makima could also be summoned through Princi's zipper, which could move her from Earth to Hell or to wherever the Spider Devil was located.

She demonstrated her ability to make her voice heard by others by placing her hand on their head, even if the person was dead. She uses this to command the Devils with whom the person is currently contracted.

Force Manipulation: Makima was shown to be capable of offensively manipulating an invisible force in various ways similar to the Darkness Devil.

This force can be used to damage her weak targets from the inside simply by staring at them. Depending on the situation, she can use this power in various other ways, such as:

She showed that she could crush her target with an invisible force over long distances. To use this technique, Makima seems to need a high-altitude location, the name of a target, and a human sacrifice.

Makima forms a symbol with her hands and commands the sacrifice to pronounce the name of the target. The sacrifice then dies, and the target is subsequently crushed, preceded by a brief feeling of "evil." This attack completely destroys the target's body but causes no damage to adjacent people or objects, not even the target's clothes.

When using this ability, the sacrifices and witnesses are blindfolded. She once used this ability in Kyoto to kill the thugs from Sawatari's gang.

She was shown to be capable of inflicting damage by projecting an invisible force onto the targets she points at with her index finger, which is powerful enough to severely damage the Darkness Devil, a Primordial Devil like the Devil of Death, but also to instantly kill Power and send an enhanced Chainsaw Man high into the atmosphere when used repeatedly against him. She usually says "Bang!" when using this ability.

High Alcohol Tolerance:

Makima has an extremely high alcohol tolerance; she can drink more than Aki Hayakawa and Himeno without showing any signs of weakness due to the large amounts of alcohol/ethanol consumed.

However, due to her contract with the Japanese Prime Minister, it is likely that any damage her excessive alcohol consumption could have caused was redirected to a randomly chosen Japanese citizen.

Hand-to-Hand Combat:

Makima is a very skilled fighter, even though she is rarely seen fighting. She was able to defeat a weakened Pochita all by herself using only her combat skills. She even managed to tear Pochita's heart out of his body after overpowering him.

High Intelligence:

Makima and Nayuta have shown to be very intelligent individuals, even without using their Devil powers.

In particular, Makima is very cunning and manipulative.

A good example is how she controls Denji throughout most of the story in Part 1. Makima knows exactly what to say, how to move, and how to react to make Denji her pet.

Aware of Denji's desires, she often intervenes by making him feel like a person, and behind the scenes, she pulls the strings to achieve her goal.

Just as she helps him feel love and happiness, she also destroys his personal relationships to make him feel desperate and guilty for the losses he suffers, like Reze's death.
