At The Avengers Tower, everyone was gathered.
Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Thor Odinson, Natasha Romanoff, Gwen Stacy, Wanda Maximoff… even Bucky Barnes and Loki were present.
After receiving Clint's call, Fury contacted them immediately and explained the situation. Meanwhile, he sent other agents to retrieve the files Banner had mentioned.
Once he had them in hand, Fury instantly understood why they were crucial.
Gamma Inhibitor V5.
One of Dr. Banner's many attempts to rid himself of the Hulk—his greatest hope… and his greatest failure. Years of work, everything he had, distilled into a single serum. It worked. But it came too late. The beast within him had grown stronger over time, and by the time the formula was complete, it was already irreversible. That was when he understood he could never get rid of the Hulk on his own. He tried reaching out to other experts.
Still, if things were as Clint had described, this data might be their lifeline. If they couldn't stop an entire city from transforming, at least they had an antidote.
At Stark Mansion, Tony broke the silence with sarcasm:
"So, a problem pops up and we already have a magical solution?"
"It's because of Laplace's last painting," Steve replied. "Banner must have recognized the name, and that made him think of this."
Between them, the tension had eased over the months. Tony still wasn't friends with Bucky, but at least he no longer looked at him with resentment.
"So what are we waiting for? We go in, release the antidote with the disperser, and done."
For once, his direct-attack plan was actually acceptable.
They had no intention of hurting Banner—much less killing him. They needed him. And if things went south, they had an ace up their sleeve.
The situation no longer seemed as hopeless as Fury had initially believed.
Even so, there was a reason to bring all the Avengers together: one of their own had been kidnapped. And if they couldn't protect each other… how could they protect the world?
Before leaving, SHIELD gave them an upgraded version of Curt Connors' disperser. The new technology used drones, with much greater range. As long as the entire city didn't transform at once, there would be no need to wait for rain to activate them.
They arrived in Lithuania, to the forest where Clint had summoned them. He was waiting and led them straight to the base.
Last time, infiltration had been easy only because it was a trap to lure Banner in. This time, it was easy for another reason: they were many, and their skills too diverse.
Thor charged in with brute force, taking down entire groups with lightning or hammer strikes. Tony didn't even give them time to react—his missiles and energy blasts did all the work. Clint and Natasha moved like invisible shadows, knocking out enemies before they even knew what hit them. Steve and Bucky, shoulder to shoulder, struck with technique and power. Gwen was the perfect balance of strength and stealth—fast as a shadow and as devastating as a battering ram. Wanda and Loki used their magic to dominate from within, breaking formations and making soldiers turn on each other.
When they reached the main chamber, they found Banner inside a capsule, connected to a gigantic machine. The pieces rotated like concentric rings, generating a green energy sphere that spun faster and faster.
In front of them, the leader reappeared.
"Avengers" he said arrogantly. "You arrived just in time to witness my masterpiece."
He gave them no chance to respond. The machine activated in an instant, and a wave of green energy engulfed them.
They immediately felt the effects: their muscles tensed, rage began to bubble inside them—as if an ancient fury had awakened.
But Thor and Loki, immune thanks to their Asgardian physiology, acted fast. They used one of the dispersers and activated it.
A cloud of greenish smoke flooded the room. Had it not been completely sealed, the wave could have escaped.
When the smoke cleared, the Avengers were fine.
The leader paled. As smart as he was, he had never predicted an antidote—much less the existence of the disperser. And certainly not that someone had warned them from the future.
Thor raised his hammer and destroyed the machine, but the damage was already done. The entire city had begun to transform.
The villain triggered a bomb to distract them and fled.
Wanda, Natasha, and Clint went after him. Natasha and Clint because of experience. Wanda, because she had sensed his mental power.
The rest freed Banner, still unconscious, and brought him to the surface.
Outside, the forest was calm… until the first roars of fury erupted, followed by explosions in every direction.
Tony looked up to the sky and joked:
"Doesn't look like it's going to rain. Any bright ideas?"
Thor stepped forward calmly.
"Did you forget who I am? Summoning storms is my specialty."
Without waiting for a response, he raised his hammer to the sky. This time, not to call down lightning—but a storm. The sky darkened. Rain began to fall.
They didn't need to launch the drones—Tony had JARVIS take control.
As soon as they reached the clouds, they released the antidote in gas form, absorbed by the droplets. Since it was an artificial storm, the clouds didn't dissipate; instead, they absorbed moisture even faster, speeding up the process.
The rain poured down intensely. The water had a faint greenish tint.
When the drops touched Banner's face, he woke up. Upon seeing the scene, he smiled in relief.
---
In a house in the village, a family was quietly having dinner. Suddenly, strange noises. The parents went to the window. The son, frightened, began to cry. But instead of comforting him, the parents got angry and told him to be quiet.
The child, furious, attacked his father. As he ran, his body turned green and muscular. With a single blow, he threw his mother out the window.
The father, also transformed, responded with brutality. The mother, seeing them, joined the fight.
Similar scenes played out all across the city.
A couple that had been laughing on a date now tore each other apart.
A lost girl began attacking everyone in her path.
An elderly man in a wheelchair stood up and struck the woman who was caring for him.
The whole town transformed. But thanks to Hulk-like regeneration, no one died.
Then the rain began.
At first, it only intensified their savage appearance.
But when the color changed, everyone screamed in pain… and collapsed. The transformations reversed.
The Avengers soon reunited with Wanda, Clint, and Natasha, who had captured the leader.
Banner, though relieved, spoke seriously:
"We need to check if everyone's okay. And help."
Tony, in his usual tone, replied:
"Don't worry, Doctor. According to my calculations, there's a 0.00001% chance of injuries—thanks to you."
Banner shook his head.
"It's not just that. I know Hulk. I know the path of destruction he leaves… and how everyone must feel after what they've been through."
When they reached the town, it was confirmed. Though everyone was alive, many homes were destroyed. The atmosphere was grim. Children crying. Adults in shock.
Natasha asked Fury to send a cleanup team. The others began helping immediately.
And so, the townspeople who had once distrusted them began to see them differently.
Because beyond the destruction, the heroes stayed. And they took responsibility.
