Chapter 465: Chapter 464: Traditional Expertise
Before this, Solomon had already analyzed Wanda Maximoff's magic.
Her power originated from the Great Shadow—the Dark God Chthon—meaning her spellcasting class was the same as his: a warlock. Some spells were usable by both of them. However, unlike Solomon, Wanda couldn't use any of the defensive (Oshtur), dream (Hoggoth), or divination (Agamotto) spells found in The Book of the Vishanti. Even if she understood the spell structures, she simply couldn't cast them.
Her magic wasn't compatible with those spells—like pouring diesel into a gasoline engine. It wasn't like the classic children's book where a spellcaster's abilities depended on their mindset or alignment. It was simply that chaos magic could not fuel white magic.
Many offensive spells were within Wanda's reach, but Solomon refused to teach them. He deliberately avoided doing so to minimize the debt she unknowingly accrued with the Great Shadow while testing her abilities. Though the price had thus far been paid in roasted rabbits, the implications were far more serious.
Solomon had considered eliminating Wanda early on, but the Ancient One and Merlyn both saw great potential in her.
Merlyn suggested that Kamar-Taj monitor Wanda Maximoff while she was alive. She was created as a vessel for Chthon's descent into the material plane, and her natural trait as a living conduit of chaos magic made her an ideal host for his possession.
As long as they kept Wanda under surveillance, Kamar-Taj could track Chthon's movements. Never before had the Vishanti's followers been able to monitor the Great Shadow with such precision. After all, the entity—sealed alongside its dark fortress N'Garai by Gaea herself—was far from idle. Ever since its exile from the material realm, Chthon had been trying to influence Earth, and no one knew what schemes it was plotting within its dark fortress.
The last significant attempt had been in Camelot's time, when Chthon manipulated Morgan le Fay into establishing a death-god-worshiping cult. Back then, before the Sorcerer Supreme even embarked on the path of magic, he had already been fighting those horrors. And in truth, the battle had never stopped—it had simply shifted from swords to spells.
Merlyn and a group of Camelot's mages were summoned by Gaea to reinforce the thousand-year-old seal on N'Garai. As the leader of those mages, Merlyn's advice carried immense weight. Moreover, Kamar-Taj and the Vishanti were, in essence, the byproducts of divine inbreeding among the ancient gods. Their close ties to Gaea meant that Merlyn's words, in many ways, reflected her will.
Nepotism was as prevalent in the magical world as anywhere else.
Even Solomon had joked before that nepotism was the most powerful magic in the world—bar none. He had once teased the Ancient One, saying that no matter how formidable a seal sounded in the legends, it would undoubtedly fail for some absurd reason in a classic story.
To ensure Solomon took the matter seriously, the Ancient One shared a secret with him.
Chthon—like the Silver Key hanging around Solomon's neck—had deep connections to another universe. Upon seeing a depiction of Chthon bearing the name of the Vishanti, Solomon immediately understood. Anyone could tell that the dark-skinned, tentacle-covered figure was far from normal.
Though Solomon often claimed he wouldn't teach Wanda too much, in reality, he had already mapped out her entire education.
Through careful research, he had once again relied on the traditional expertise of the Sorcerer Supreme lineage—he had found a way for Wanda to reduce her debt and even evade repayment entirely.
In simple terms, Solomon wanted Wanda Maximoff to develop as a psychokinetic rather than a warlock. Instead of calling upon a patron or performing specific rituals, she could simply manipulate the chaos magic coursing through her body to produce spell-like effects.
Although both methods involved casting spells, they were fundamentally different. Psychic magic did not drain the caster's mental energy, meaning as long as she could handle the side effects, she could use it freely.
To put it bluntly, Solomon was exploiting Wanda's soul-bound connection to Chthon to forcibly extract power from the Dark God himself—making Chthon suffer the consequences of his own actions.
After all, Chthon was willingly offering this power. What did it have to do with Wanda personally? If someone voluntarily gives you money, why should you return it?
Of course, the power obtained this way was akin to mooching off free Wi-Fi—never particularly strong, but still free.
A weaker signal? Slower speed? Who complains about free Wi-Fi?
As long as Wanda followed Solomon's method of spellcasting instead of relying on instinct, she could avoid major complications.
Psychokinetics were notoriously difficult to find mentors for, but fortunately, no magical organization in this universe was as professional as Kamar-Taj. When it came to energy manipulation, no one surpassed the sorcerers.
Thus, while teaching Wanda how to harness her powers, Solomon also subjected her to physical training—forcing her body to endure the non-lethal strain caused by overloading her abilities.
Additionally, due to chaos magic's strong influence over the mind, Solomon expanded Wanda's enchantment and illusion abilities. Previously, it had been mentioned that Wanda was a natural-born hypnotist—an essential skill for psychic spellcasting. Necromancy, a crucial branch of psychic magic, was also added to her curriculum.
Hybrid spellcasters rarely achieved greatness, primarily because they had too much to learn.
The Scarlet Witch was a natural hybrid spellcaster, and Solomon aimed to fully develop her abilities so she could eventually wield power against Chthon. Her education would be extensive.
"Twenty more push-ups, girl."
Solomon blew a whistle—though only he and Wanda could hear the sharp sound.
Wanda blinked. She hadn't even noticed when Solomon had changed into a black-and-white tracksuit. That, too, must have been some kind of magic—one she had never encountered before. And from the looks of it, he had no intention of teaching her.
Not that she needed to learn it—her own abilities could accomplish the same effect.
Superpowers were something Solomon couldn't teach, as he didn't have any himself. To Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, or even Nick Fury, Solomon might seem like an exceptionally powerful superhuman. But in reality, he had no such abilities. Those men simply couldn't grasp the difference between magic and superpowers—a grave insult to the power Solomon had obtained through sheer intellect.
"Come on, hurry up! Time is running out!"
The sorcerer's expression made it seem like he was genuinely here to exercise. "You need to stay in shape to learn magic properly!"
Wanda Maximoff and Daisy Johnson shared the same misery—neither of them excelled at physical training. Especially without proper athletic gear, exercise was an unbearable burden. In the past, she couldn't even afford the kind of workout clothes girls in developed countries took for granted.
All her training was confined to this small cell. The chance to wander freely through the castle, as she had on their first meeting, never came again.
Now, exhausted and gasping for breath, she collapsed onto the cold floor.
Her arms and shoulders burned with soreness. That Convict Conditioning book was nonsense! If she had the chance to go outside with Pietro, she'd gladly skip a magic lesson for it. Who knew magic lessons required physical training?
"If you want to go out, then practice what I've taught you," Solomon said. "Mental influence is your natural gift. I've already shown you how to use it. Pick up your quill—don't swing a hammer. Figure out a way to obtain a spirit board and a science book from those people. That is your first test."
