So I Became a Witch and Started Doing Daily Quests

Chapter 23

Chapter 23: Fragment of Authority

Janna was utterly baffled, yet she wasn’t content to simply brush the matter aside.

“Perhaps I should consult a relevant expert to clear up my confusion.”

When it came to experts on transfiguration, Lilith Mage was undoubtedly the foremost authority. However, as a First Tier Wizard, asking her a question would inevitably cost academic credits.

But for the currently penniless Janna, she couldn’t even afford to rent relevant books from the library, let alone spend credits to ask a question.

“I still have one chance to consult with Professor Grace Eva. And for such a relatively fundamental question, there’s really no need to specifically request Professor Mage’s answer.”

Seeing the sunlight outside the dormitory already sinking in the west, Janna, who knew that well-mannered apprentices wouldn’t disturb others at this hour, gave up the idea of heading to the faculty office to seek out Grace Eva.

“I’ll practice ‘Song of the Ocean’ and ‘Finch’ a few more times, then start tonight’s meditation.”

Janna had a feeling that it wouldn’t be long before she broke through to Level 9.

If she kept developing at this pace, she would likely be able to attempt breaking through to Second Tier Wizard Apprentice before summer arrived.

“Once I reach Second Tier Wizard Apprentice, all witchcraft level caps can be raised to Level 29. Moreover, I’ll also be able to expand my Contract Summoning slots.”

After settling her short-term plans, Janna began diligently practicing her opera pieces.

Only when the moon had climbed above the treetops did she finally complete a round of practice for the two songs...

...

“Hoo—inhale—hoo—exhale—”

Rhythmic, steady breathing echoed in the quiet dormitory.

Inhaling and exhaling, fine green light particles flowed in sync with the nearby magical plants’ vibrations, entering Janna’s nostrils and mouth with a steady rhythm, transforming into magic power and expanding her witch ecology.

“Buzz—”

Just as Janna’s consciousness delved deeper into her mind, entering a state of deep meditation, a buzzing sound suddenly resonated from the depths of her soul. Alongside it, a dazzling emerald light surged forth, quickly enveloping her soul.

“It’s happening again...”

Sensing the anomaly in her soul, Janna instinctively fixed her soul’s gaze on the source of the mutation—an emerald-green seed that had always existed in her soul in seed form: the Daily Quest System.

“Hoo—inhale—hoo—exhale—”

The even breathing resumed.

No longer focusing on the anomaly in her soul, Janna once more slipped into a deep meditative state.

But this time, instead of darkness, what she saw was an endless sea of forest, stretching infinitely in all directions.

“Am I becoming that sky-piercing giant tree again...?”

“No, this time... I’m moving.”

Unlike the stationary giant tree perspective in past dreams, this time her vision moved rapidly, flying to the edge of the forest sea and passing through the barrier that enveloped it.

“Roar—”

Pollution pervaded, aberrations erupted.

Unlike the tranquil breeze within the barrier, outside the forest sea was a scene of apocalyptic contamination unleashed by extraplanar demons.

A dark sun loomed in the sky, fallen gods whispered lowly, and evil gods from beyond dimensions constantly sent apostles into the wizard world, attempting to complete their descent ritual through slaughter...

At the same time, gazing upon the blood-red apocalyptic scene before her, the chaotic whispers nearly tore Janna’s soul apart, making her desperately want to flee this terrifying dream and never again pry into the will of god-wars.

“The will of the wizard is not to be profaned—”

A blazing scepter of life, vast rule-bound authority—an endless flood of life transformed into boundless vine-covered forest, relentlessly repelling the contamination of outer gods that pervaded the main world.

As an emerald light enveloped everything, Janna’s vision went abruptly black.

When she opened her eyes again, her perspective shifted back to that of the giant tree.

There, she saw a slender figure exuding a dense aura of life, who sacrificed herself to eradicate all the wills of the outer gods...

Surrounding her were the night, the sun, moonlight, the ocean—and the wailing earth.

But in the end, the shattering of authority still could not be prevented.

Consciousness faded, and the torrent of life became scattered glimmers of light, endlessly cleansing the pollution from the will of the wizard...

“Whoosh whoosh whoosh—”

Fragmented scenes quickly flashed before Janna’s eyes, until finally her gaze fixed on a fragment of authority wrapped in the aura of life.

Carrying infinite might, it tore through the void.

Ultimately, that fragment transformed into a green tree seed, falling into the myriad-dimensional planes and vanishing from the dreamscape...

...

“Hoo—”

The dream faded, and her vision returned.

Staring at the familiar scene in her moonlit dormitory, Janna’s dazed consciousness gradually regained clarity.

“So... this is your origin...?”

“A fragment of authority shattered after a god-war...”

Focusing inward, Janna stared at the emerald tree seed floating in her soul, feeling a complicated mix of emotions.

Since her reincarnation and arrival in this world, her greatest reliance had been the “Daily Quest System.”

She had pondered the system’s legitimacy, but with no clues to anchor her reasoning, all her conclusions were mere castles in the air.

Only through the irregular dreamscapes encountered during deep meditation had Janna occasionally caught glimpses of the truth’s shadow.

But never had she expected to be swept into a god-war through her dream today, when all previous dreams had stayed locked to the “giant tree” perspective.

Moreover, the god-war was of a high tier—just peering into a sliver of it through the dream had almost torn her soul apart.

Thankfully, through today’s dream, the truth behind the “Daily Quest System” had begun to reveal itself.

“No matter whether there’s an unknown price behind these blessings, for me right now, this system is the greatest opportunity of my life... Perhaps, if I can use this to comprehend the laws embedded within the authority, then becoming a full-fledged wizard would no longer be an unreachable goal...”

A First Tier Wizard Apprentice, to an ordinary mortal, was merely someone who had gained extraordinary powers.

But advancing to Second Tier Wizard Apprentice brought a significant transformation of both body and soul, though life-wise, one still counted only as a powerful human.

Only upon becoming a Level 3 Apprentice would one begin to transcend the mortal coil and enter the realm of extraordinary beings.

Apprentices with powerful bloodline talents could easily regenerate lost limbs; those with elemental affinity could even use elemental power to evolve into semi-elemental life forms...

But a wizard was no longer human—transcending even the bounds of extraordinary life.

Their insight into truth granted them the ability to observe the world’s essence.

And mastery of the power of rules was the only path by which an apprentice could become a wizard...
