Chapter 296: Section 295 - Poaching
Watching Boss Hanna go off with Xiao Jiu to flirt with the chunky uncle, Chen Fei turned around, ready to find something to eat to fill his stomach. He had just spotted roasted camel and having never tasted camel meat, he wondered what it was like. This was the perfect chance to try something new and exotic.
His gaze suddenly fixed, and then he took three steps in a burst of two, storming over with a fierce momentum.
"Beast Tamer, what are you doing here?"
He had long forgotten the name of the man, only remembering that he owned a big tiger named "Queen Katie," and had even fed his wolf, a shame considering its sleek, splendidly striped tiger skin.
"Work!"
B-level Psychic Ability User, Beast Tamer Jacob Felix, was expressionless. He had recognized Chen Fei for a while but had pretended not to see him, neither wanting to greet him nor retreat.
Like the other bodyguards in the estate, Mr. Beast Tamer was dressed in a dark blue, crisply pressed suit with a small bow tie.
The former executive manager from the Aircrew Base and enemy of 911, Ximen Temple Kong, wouldn't cross Star Yuan. Position? That didn't exist.
So now he had become a temporary security guard at a private estate in Great Island of Britannia, merely to earn some Silver spending money, and it wasn't really about holding a grudge against anyone.
Behind him, lined up in a row, sat ten large dogs, no, North American grey wolves, their heads held high and chests puffed out.
The North American grey wolf, belonging to the canine family, is a heavyweight contender. Their weight and body length could even rival humans. Perhaps only a Husky would dare to challenge them one-on-one, no, maybe even Huskies couldn't handle them.
"Heh! Have you learned your lesson?"
Chen Fei's gaze swept past the Beast Tamer and settled on these North American grey wolves.
The man switched from tigers to wolves, had he discovered the superiority of wolf pack tactics?
"Hmph!"
Jacob Felix hypnotized himself, I'm a security guard, I'm a security guard, I'm a security guard, don't chat with guests during work hours, didn't hear, didn't hear...
"Come, let me pet you!"
Chen Fei tried to pet the North American grey wolves he was meeting for the first time. They had been cleaned up and were fluffy; he wondered what they felt like.
Having been allowed to pet Er Lang's big cat head, why shouldn't he pet these mere wild grey wolves?
The Beast Tamer could touch them, why couldn't he?
It was purely a case of being too handsy.
"Be careful, it might bite you!"
Jacob Felix couldn't stand it anymore and took the initiative to warn him.
He could hardly believe this guy was actually a Wolf King. Were the heads of unfamiliar animals really that appealing to touch?
It must be a habit you got from your own wolf, right?
Seeing the North American grey wolves showing their teeth impatiently and making threatening gestures, Chen Fei suddenly shouted, "Woof!"
Your next read awaits at empire
Then he burst into laughter, not knowing why he found it so amusing, as if his IQ had been struck.
North American grey wolves: "..."
B-level Psychic Ability User, Beast Tamer Jacob Felix: "..."
You must be really bored!
One of the duty managers from the Aircrew Base, Mahnam, was right about Chen Fei—this guy was undeniably cheeky.
"Pfft!"
A few young ladies nearby who had seen Chen Fei teasing the wolves finally couldn't hold back any longer and burst out laughing.
"Can I have one?"
Chen Fei pointed at one of the largest ones, which would undoubtedly be a Wolf King in the wild. He planned to replace Ah Hu, Shen Su's inadequate watchdog, with this experienced security grey wolf to strengthen the security forces at Patan Elementary School.
It was extraordinary for a mountain region elementary school to have two wolf guards, one of them even being a Magical Beast.
Although this Beast Tamer's skills were nothing special, his eye for selecting animals was top-notch. Whether it was the Bengal tiger "Queen Katie" or these ten North American grey wolves, each one was stout and robust with glossy fur, showing exceptional vitality and spirit.
Jacob Felix, so enraged he didn't want to speak, turned and walked away with the ten wolves following closely behind, not even glancing at this disliked and annoying fellow.
"Do you know that Beast Tamer?"
Behind a disappointed Chen Fei, a voice spoke up.
Turning, Chen Fei saw a somewhat reserved young man and pointed at himself in some surprise.
"Eh? Are you talking to me?"
In the entire Green Cherry Orchard Estate, aside from Boss Hanna, Xiao Jiu, and that Beast Tamer, Chen Fei didn't recognize anyone else. Naturally, he couldn't chat and laugh in groups like the others.
Moreover, with his background, he simply couldn't mingle in the circle of elite guests invited here, so he'd rather tease the Beast Tamer and play with wolves than try to familiarize himself everywhere like Boss Hanna.
"Even if you're familiar, what's the use? Thinking about switching jobs?"
Think about those millions of Star Yuan in interest-free personal debt, you would firmly follow Boss Hana.
Moreover, the work atmosphere at the Aircrew Base suits Chen Fei's taste and temperament. From top to bottom, there aren't so many workplace intrigues, and you can drink high-end brands that ordinary folks can't afford. Only a fool would give up such a comfortable job and jump into a place full of uncertainties.
"Hello, I'm Zuo Gengming from Spring Field Defense, here's my business card."
The young man showed a shy smile and handed over a business card with both hands.
"Oh, I'm Chen Fei, sorry, I don't have a business card."
Chen Fei took the business card.
The name "Zuo Gengming" had no position listed around it, but one could guess that his status must be high. Spring Field Defense Limited Company, never heard of it.
Apart from the top 30 companies in the industry, there are few military contractors that Chen Fei would remember by name.
The ones he could remember were generally those with either unfavorable or cooperative relationships with Aircrew Base and Jiu Defense Company.
Most of the military contractors invited here were small to medium-sized and fell outside the top 100 in industry rankings, which Chen Fei hadn't heard of, so it was not surprising.
"No worries, I know you, the 'Rookie' from 'Genuine Fragrance' Combat Flight Squadron of the Aircrew Base. Sorry, your flight call sign is quite unique; it seems a bit like playing possum."
Unexpectedly, this shy and reserved young man was quite the conversationalist. He didn't dwell on the nickname "Rookie" but complimented it tactfully instead.
"Really? Hahaha, it was randomly chosen. Others started using it, and it just stuck; I should have chosen a more domineering call sign."
Chen Fei scratched the back of his head, a bit embarrassed.
However, in the flying circles, names like "Dog Remainder," Dog Egg," "Old Egg Bubble," "Deflated Calf," "Donkey's Day," "Crooked Goods" were mainstream. It was partly due to the seniors who named the juniors with a twisted sense of humor, and partly to make it hard for Lord Yama to recall the names and claim their lives. This unwritten rule exists both in the East and the West.
Compared to those bizarre call signs in flying circles, "Rookie" might be considered rather fresh. However, Chen Fei, a true rookie, was oblivious to this and thought that something like "Sky Overlord" or "Sovereign of the Skies," "Heaven King Covers Earth Tiger" would be stronger than that mysterious pile of spices. Big Bear's pattern was just that limited.
Yet he genuinely misunderstood Squadron Leader Chekhov, who managed to establish a uniform flight call sign team in a flight circle filled with all sorts of chaotic names. It was a rarity, neat and well-organized, like an established combat formation.
The young man who initiated the conversation with Chen Fei, Zuo Gengming, spoke with a smile, "That must be very interesting."
Seeing but not revealing, he didn't plan to remind him about some basic knowledge in the flight circle, as there was no need for it. The status of "Rookie" Chen Fei in his own Jianghu was well established; a tough man capable of taking on anyone, including himself, no one would dare to laugh at his lack of understanding, unless they were out of their minds.
The Aircrew Base and Jiu Defense Company were not particularly well-known in Blue Star, but the Combat Flight Squadron "Genuine Fragrance" had a widespread reputation. Anyone in this circle would know them.
In this world, there are very few flight squadrons capable of contending with the real Sky Overlords, Metallic Dragons, besides the Sky Knight and Crystal Jets.
Even the active air forces under Sovereignty couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't end up like "Genuine Fragrance" Squadron—annihilated.
Against Metallic Dragons, total annihilation was probably the norm.
Chen Fei, who didn't play by the rules, straightened his face and asked, "Mr. Zuo, are you trying to poach me?"
No beating around the bush, since the other party showed they knew him, his coming over to chat definitely had a purpose.
The biggest likelihood was that he wanted to pry away Boss Hana's wall corner, which also represented the biggest interest. It wasn't hard to guess.
"Ah!"
Zuo Gengming was completely taken aback by how direct he was and said somewhat embarrassingly, "Uh, sorry, yes, that's the case."
"I must refuse."
Chen Fei felt he might need to act like a repeating machine for a while, repeatedly rejecting others.
Zuo Gengming, neither angry nor discouraged, asked curiously as if chatting with a friend, "May I know the reasons?"
"First, I owe the boss a huge amount of money; second, the current work environment and atmosphere satisfy me, and I don't want to change. Third, my girlfriend works near the base, it's convenient to take care of her; fourth, I've done a lot of work without seeing the results yet, leaving now would be regrettable."
Chen Fei didn't usually list reasons as "first, second," but this time he listed them as "first, second, third, fourth."
Shen Fei wasn't quite his girlfriend yet; she just gave him a chance, but Chen shamelessly pulled her into his bowl to assert his sovereignty.
If your skin isn't thick enough, you deserve to be single forever, eating dog food!
Zuo Gengming said with a smile, "I see, I understand. But if we have a chance to cooperate in the future, I mean public-to-public cooperation, I hope you'll support us."
"Absolutely."
Even though Chen Fei had clearly rejected the offer, neither side burnt the bridges.
They both left some mercy for each other, better for future encounters, no need to end on a sour note.
"Hello, are you Mr. Chen Fei? I am Robert from Royce Military Company!"
Zuo Gengming from Spring Field Defense Limited Company had set a precedent, and in this world, there were either no times or countless times—soon a second, a third military contractor... approached and handed out business cards, all of which were the same routine. On the surface, they sought acquaintance, familiar faces, but in reality, they took the opportunity when Boss Hana was absent to secretly steal the corner of the wall from Jiu Defense Company.
The young man who first greeted Chen Fei was quickly squeezed to the outer circle, but he wasn't upset at all, instead smiling and nodding at Chen Fei who was surrounded in the center, engendering some goodwill from Chen Fei, as the other at least wasn't an opportunist.
