Vol 5. Chapter 90: Departing Without a Word
Mysteries upon mysteries piled up, leaving Leon thoroughly baffled by the enigmatic Mevis.
Even without fully understanding the sequence of events, Leon was determined not to let a mysterious figure like Mevis—a woman seemingly resurrected from the dead—continue to linger by Noa's side.
Rosvisser shared the same conviction. Without much hesitation, the couple set off for St. Heath's Academy.
"But if Mevis truly has ulterior motives, what could they be?"
On the way, Rosvisser voiced her thoughts. "Getting close to Noa? Gaining her trust? Or something else entirely?"
Leon frowned deeply; it was rare for him to feel this lost about a situation.
Faced with his wife's questions, Leon couldn't provide a clear or definitive answer this time.
"All I know is that whatever her goal is, it doesn't seem to involve replacing Noa outright or harming her directly—at least not for now."
Leon pressed his lips together and continued, "Regardless, her background is too vague. The academic investigation likely only uncovered what she carefully fabricated before submitting her credentials to the academy, which explains why they found nothing.
"We were incredibly lucky to stumble upon that diary."
Looking back now, Leon couldn't help but feel a chill.
Mevis, who should have perished along with the Black Moon Dragon Clan thirty years ago, now stood as Noa's teacher at St. Heath's Academy, interacting with her daily.
Were her words true or false?
If true, she indeed hailed from the extinct Black Moon Dragon Clan.
But if false, how could she possibly claim the identity of the sole survivor of the Black Moon Dragon Clan?
What exactly happened to her after the collapse of her clan thirty years ago?
Did she encounter someone? Make certain promises?
Or perhaps strike some kind of deal...
Leon rubbed his temples, his thoughts tangled in chaos.
Even so, he resolved to head to the academy and protect Noa. He and Rosvisser agreed they wouldn't let their daughter face such unknown risks alone.
Hours later, at dawn, the couple arrived at St. Heath's Academy.
Classes had already begun. Leon gestured toward the office building in the distance.
"You go find Principal Olette and show her the diary. Explain Mevis's situation. I'll head straight to the training hall to find Noa."
Rosvisser nodded. "Be careful."
"Got it."
With their plan set, the two parted ways.
Leon crossed the grassy field and arrived at the training grounds connected to the arena. Entering the hall Noa frequently used for practice, he looked around, but neither Noa nor Mevis was in sight.
Leon's heart sank. He hurried inside, about to call out Noa's name, when he heard a faint sobbing sound coming from the audience stands.
Turning toward the sound, he saw Noa sitting alone in the corner of the back row. Her small shoulders trembled as she cried quietly.
Leon rushed over immediately.
"Noa, what's wrong? Are you okay?"
As he knelt beside her, Leon noticed a letter clutched in her hands. The paper bore smudges where her tears had fallen.
Noa raised her tear-streaked face and looked at Leon.
"Dad... Teacher Mevis is gone."
She wiped at her eyes and sniffled before asking,
"Why are you here, Dad?"
"Well, I..."
Leon stammered, unsure how to respond.
Before he could find the words, Noa looked down at the letter in her hands and said softly,
"She left." Chapter provided via M|V|L@EMPYR.
"She... who?"
"Teacher Mevis..."
Noa's shoulders shook as she sobbed.
Crushed by the weight of her emotions, she crumpled the letter in her hands, biting her lip.
"Why did she leave without saying a word...?"
"Mevis... is gone?!"
Leon opened his mouth to speak, but countless questions jammed in his throat, leaving him unsure which to ask first.
After a brief hesitation, he decided to ask nothing.
Leon knew that to Noa, Mevis was nothing more than a kind and capable mentor.
Noa was unaware of Mevis's mysterious background or her inexplicable return from the dead.
To Noa, Mevis was a trusted teacher and friend.
For Mevis to suddenly leave without a word, leaving behind only a letter, was undoubtedly a devastating blow to Noa.
Leon realized that if he told Noa now that her teacher might be a resurrected "ghost," it would be too much for her to bear. Even if she believed him, the shock would be overwhelming.
So instead, Leon gently stroked Noa's shoulder, letting her lean into his arms as he comforted her.
"Maybe Mevis had reasons she couldn't explain, which is why she left without saying goodbye."
"Do you really think so, Dad...?"
"I do. Adults sometimes have things they just can't talk about."
"And besides, Mevis didn't leave without a word—she left you a letter, didn't she?"
Noa sniffled as she leaned into her father's warm embrace, her gaze falling on the letter.
The final line of the letter read:
"I will wait for you in the true future.
—Your teacher, Mevis Damirlo."
Her father's words offered a small measure of comfort, but the pain still lingered, clouding her thoughts. Noa carefully folded the letter and rested her head against Leon's chest, closing her eyes.
About half an hour later, Leon brought Noa to the principal's office.
Opening the door, they found the room silent except for the ticking of the clock.
Rosvisser and Principal Olette sat facing each other.
Hearing footsteps, Rosvisser turned and saw them.
"Noa..."
"Mom, you're here too..."
Noa walked over and stood beside Rosvisser.
Rosvisser immediately noticed the traces of tears on her daughter's face.
Being perceptive, she didn't ask any questions, instead pulling Noa into her lap.
Taking out a handkerchief, she gently wiped the tears from Noa's eyes.
"Teacher Mevis resigned yesterday," Principal Olette said with a sigh.
"Actually, at the start of this semester, a few months ago, she told me she planned to resign soon but would complete her most important collaborative projects and external evaluations first.
"She also asked me not to tell Noa about her decision."
So her resignation had been planned months ago... Leon realized it likely {N•o•v•e•l•i•g•h•t} wasn't connected to their discovery of the diary.
"Did Mevis explain why she was resigning?" Leon asked.
Principal Olette shook her head.
"She didn't give any specific reason. I suspect it might be related to the diary you—"
She stopped mid-sentence, catching the subtle looks exchanged between Leon and Rosvisser.
Leon stood by the door, subtly shaking his head and glancing at Noa nestled in Rosvisser's arms.
Understanding his intent, the principal refrained from continuing.
"Mevis was an outstanding and low-key teacher during her time at the academy. We'll miss her."
Turning to Noa, she added,
"Noa, I'm sorry for keeping this from you, but it was at Mevis's request. I hope you and the Silver Dragon family can understand.
"We'll arrange for another teacher to take her place soon."
"Thank you," Rosvisser said as she stood, lifting Noa into her arms.
With Noa hiding her face in her mother's shoulder, Rosvisser discreetly pocketed the diary from the desk.
"Let's not trouble you any further. We'll take our leave."
"Of course. I'll have someone escort you out," the principal offered.
Leon opened the door, and Rosvisser carried Noa out first.
He followed closely, but just as he stepped out, a teacher entered, holding a document.
"Principal, here's a withdrawal application for a student in the young dragon division. Please review it."
"Alright, bring it here."
Leon barely spared the teacher a glance as he hurried to catch up with Rosvisser and Noa.
