At three o'clock in the afternoon, Roy arrived punctually at Capital University, joining Elon and the other school team members.
During the photoshoot, the official photographer praised Roy, noting that he was not only photogenic but also had excellent camera awareness, skillfully posing for impressive results.
Roy could only credit the store manager's expert recommendations.
After the lengthy session, at five o'clock, Roy boarded the bus allocated by Capital University with Cosmog perched on his shoulder.
Their destination was Capital Stadium, originally a gymnasium.
This massive venue could accommodate 20,000 spectators. Safety barriers surrounding the arena were constructed from special alloys, resistant even to professional-level Pokémon attacks. The entire battlefield measured 1,000 meters in length and width, with an open-air ceiling. The arena was divided into distinct environments: a lake area, a rocky terrain, a grassy field, and a volcanic section, providing adequate space for Pokémon of any type to demonstrate their abilities.
Throughout the arena, expensive slow-motion cameras were installed to capture spectacular moments and broadcast them in real-time.
All Pokémon universities in the region would compete at this stadium.
From this perspective, local Capital universities enjoyed home-field advantage. However, since all parts of China were relatively close to Capital, with most locations accessible by train within one or two hours, the real home advantage was minimal.
The true home-field advantage would be felt when traveling to competitions in other provinces.
Inside the bus, Roy sat beside Elon.
Elon explained the competition rules:
"The regional selection battles use a points system. The top four point-earners advance to the national competition, with the highest scorer promoted as a seed player. It's straightforward, not complicated."
"After the provincial competitions conclude, we'll face schools from outside the province, such as Stonecrest University, requiring more extensive travel."
After listening, Roy couldn't help asking a question:
"Why don't they come to our competition?"
"Good question," Elon smiled. "Because they've won the East China Division championship seven consecutive times. Stonecrest University is the defending champion, while we're the challengers. Not just us, but all inter-provincial competitions in the East China Division will be held in 'Linan City,' where Stonecrest University is located... this is the privilege accumulated from past glory, combined with home-field advantage."
In the world of Trainers, strength took precedence.
Seeing that Roy understood, Elon stood and approached the other three team members, asking, "You haven't attended school for two months or participated in club activities. Do you need me to introduce you?"
Roy smiled: "I already spoke with all the seniors during the photoshoot."
There were only five candidates for the school team:
The team captain and first-ranked player, Elon. The second-ranked player, the team's only woman, Anya. The third-ranked contestant, originally Brian, now Roy. The fourth-ranked player, Patrick, and fifth-ranked player, Philip, who were brothers.
The ranking represented, in a sense, a symbol of strength.
"You may have talked, but do you know their primary Pokémon and specialties?" Elon turned toward the other members and asked, "Who wants to introduce themselves first?"
"I'll go," Anya smiled at Roy. Though not conventionally beautiful, she possessed a scholarly demeanor that conveyed gentleness and kindness, giving the impression of addressing a respected elder.
"I'm a senior this year, specializing in Fire-type Pokémon. I have five main battle Pokémon, though I'm still developing my sixth."
In the national college league, only three players could participate in a match, but having more primary Pokémon to choose from significantly deepened the team's strategic options.
Patrick, seated nearby, joked: "It's unfortunate that Anya was defeated by Captain Elon's type advantage. Otherwise, in a 3v3 match, she'd be comparable to the captain."
Anya quickly shook her head: "Don't exaggerate. I'm still far behind."
Hearing this, Roy developed an understanding of Anya's strength.
Elon, having trained under Principal Finn, specialized in Water-type Pokémon, naturally countering Anya's Fire specialization.
Disregarding type advantages, if their strengths were otherwise equal, Anya's five Pokémon must have reached their [Racial limit]. With proper training for her sixth Pokémon, she would reach Elon's level.
She was just one step away from the elite Trainer standard.
It was only a matter of time—she would likely become an elite Trainer by the next semester.
This strength level appropriately justified her position as the team's second-ranked member.
Next to introduce himself was Patrick, who had just spoken. A slightly overweight young man, he embraced his twin brother and said with a smile, "Let's introduce ourselves together. Philip and I are both juniors this year. He's in the same grade as Brian, who you eliminated, and their strengths are comparable."
Philip added: "Comparable refers to individual battles. My brother and I excel at team battles."
Roy translated mentally: In individual battles, they were equal to Brian, but in group battles, they could overwhelm him.
Well, it seemed Brian wasn't particularly impressive...
Roy began wondering how Brian had secured the third position—it seemed somewhat undeserved.
As if perceiving Roy's doubts, Elon smiled and explained, "Brian's performance was consistently stable and balanced in both individual and team battles. We all have our specializations. For instance, Anya and I excel at singles."
Anya asked curiously:
"What about you, Roy? Which format do you think suits you better?"
"Probably singles. I haven't experienced a 3v3 battle yet."
Roy wasn't entirely certain.
In school team competitions, individual battles were conducted first, followed by team battles.
The loser received no points. Winning one format and losing the other earned one point. Winning both individual and team battles earned three points.
From Capital University's team composition, they clearly favored individual combat. However, Central, League, and Stonecrest—the three powerhouse schools—excelled in both individual and team battles, without apparent weaknesses.
"...You're not planning to use this little one in battle, are you?" Patrick suddenly poked at Cosmog on Roy's shoulder curiously. "It doesn't appear to have any combat capability."
Cosmog was holding a Berry Anya had given it, slowly chewing on Roy's shoulder. Undisturbed by Patrick's interruption, it offered a silly smile before continuing to eat.
Roy didn't bother lamenting its lack of dignity as a 'legendary' Pokémon, casually responding: "It's called Cosmog. It's not part of my battle team—think of it as a companion Pokémon."
Keeping domesticated Pokémon as pets was common in affluent households.
After a pause, Roy added in a joking tone: "Don't be fooled by its appearance as a food-loving mascot. When it evolves, all of us together might not be enough for it to devour in one bite."
Hearing this, everyone was momentarily stunned before erupting into laughter.
"Hahaha, our junior really knows how to joke!"
"Right! Some legendary Pokémon start out extremely weak, like Anya's Deino or the Dratini from our region..."
"Legendary Pokémon may begin weak, but they show extraordinary potential when young. Cosmog only seems interested in eating..."
"Truly, Cosmog is so adorable—being a mascot suits it perfectly!"
The bus filled with laughter, creating an atmosphere of joy.
At that moment, a phone vibrated with an incoming message.
"That should be the confirmation of our first opponent," Elon remarked, picking up his phone to read the message. Suddenly, his expression changed: "Damn, we're going to be in the opening match this year..."
Hearing this, Anya and the others seemed to guess something, looking somewhat resigned.
Roy asked curiously, "What's happening?"
Elon shrugged, tossed his phone to Roy, and gestured for him to read it himself.
The message contained a single line:
"National College League, East China Division, Regional Qualifier, First Match: Eastbridge University vs Capital University."
—The Civil War of the Six Elites of Coastal Region.
