Shield Hero in Teyvat

Chapter 4: Amber the Outrider

Eula was giving Naofumi mountains of questions that he tried his best to answer. But he couldn't truly answer all of them because he didn't have an explanation for most of her questions. But thankfully, she realized that he couldn't answer all of them, so she dropped it, but thought of what he did answer.

She did explain to him how people would get their Visions, and what Naofumi did was something anyone who didn't have Visions wished could have happened to them. To have a chance to be chosen by a god and grow stronger. He could understand that what he did was a cheat code.

People here have to be picked by the gods if they have the potential, ambition, goal, and desire that they view as the best. Not many were able to obtain Visions and spend most of their lives hoping to receive a Vision, to be grateful that they were chosen by their respective Archon or other Archons.

This made Naofumi feel that he didn't truly deserve to have the ability to use Anemo. From what Eula told him, when she received her Vision, was that she endured so much hardship, her desire to restore her family name without using her background. It was something that made the Cryo Archon see her ambition and give her a Cryo Vision.

"Once we get through the Whispering Woods we'll be able to reach Mondstadt in just an hour."

"That's great, I can't wait to see what the city has to offer. So many opportunities are just waiting for me."

Eula let out an amused sigh as an idea emerged in her mind.

"If you want, you can join the knights. The Shield Hero would be perfect for defending the city. I can tell the Grand Master that I recommend the Knights of Favonius."

She half-jokes but offers Naofumi the chance to join the knights. If she were being honest, she figures Mondstadt can get another soon-to-be powerful ally, whether he became a knight or not.

Naofumi took Eula's offer to deep thought, the idea of being a knight does sound like something he'll be more suited for, given his shield. But, there was a lingering feeling inside of him that was telling him he could do more than just being a knight.

"Do you mind if I think about it?"

He asks hoping that it makes her understand that he didn't have an answer. But thankfully she understood.

"You don't have to join the moment you arrive in the city. But I doubt that with your current skills, you would be able to pass the combat test. If you want, I think I know of someone who could help you, she is a Geo user and can make a Geo shield. But if you wish I can help you with handling heavier hits."

Naofumi let out a defeated sigh, he knew he needed to get good at using his shield. The previous battles were just his own instincts and luck. All he was good at was cooking food, and battle strategies in online games.

But he did thank her for offering to help him get better with his shield. He wondered who this woman, girl was. That Eula knows that would help him. But before he could ask, he noticed three slimes, but this time they looked like they were made out of lava, or what it seemed to Naofumi.

"Pyro slimes! Be careful, Naofumi, they leave small fires in their path on grass, and if you allow it to hit you, you'll catch fire!"

Naofumi nodded as he prepared his shield. It was currently on the Wind Shield as the magic defense stat on the shield is the highest. The best shield to not get hurt by the Pyro damage of the slimes. And that he wants to have the skill that came from the Wind Shield permanently.

So the best he could do was equip the shield with the skill that came with it.

"Hold on! I want to try a skill I got from a new shield that was unlocked by the statue. Gust Shield!"

He shouted the name of the shield, which was what he had to activate his first shield skill. He also put his shield forward as it was like a choreographed motion. The moment he shouted the skill, the green gem glowed as a gust of wind appeared in the middle of the Pyro slime.

It picks up the slime along with the other two while a faint shield barrier prevents the slime from being flung off. It twirled in circles for a moment as the slime was just going around and around. Soon, the skill ended as the three slimes came back down. The slimes still moved but it was clear they took damage.

Naofumi is satisfied with the result, from what he was able to learn about the skill was that the damage depends on how high his magic stat is. He wondered if his magic stat had been higher then the damage would have been bigger. Still, at least he now has another means of attacking.

He also noticed the SP bar below his HP and top of MP had finally been used, like ⅛. The skill now had a 20-second cooldown as he assumed he could use the skill 7 more times before it recharged.

"Eula, I think it best that you finish it off!"

"...Huh!? Oh, right!"

Eula was just watching Naofumi using his skill for the first time as it nearly made her miss what he said. She activates her Elemental Skill as she kills off the slimes with the melt reaction.

It was an Element Reaction, melt is a damage bonus depending on which goes first and second, Pyro or Cyro. For Cryo attacking Pyro, it does nearly double damage, but for Pyro attacking Cryo, it does double damage.

Naofumi noted it down in his mind just in case he comes across another Pyro enemy and gains the ability to use the Cryo element. Then a notification popped up saying that Eula reached level 2. Naofumi was glad Eula was growing stronger alongside him.

"Eula, was something on your mind when I did the skill?"

He asks while absorbing the slimes into his shield as it unlocks the Pyro Slime Shield. He also noticed she was distracted by what Gust Shield did.

"You can say that, when you did that skill, I was surprised Pyro didn't fuse with that gust of wind. Anemo processes the ability to combine any element that can be absorbed, like Electro, Hydro, Pyro, and Cyro elements. I thought your skill was related to Anemo but I guess it was just powerful winds."

"Anemo does that? Huh, then again, my shield is unique, so it must have a different way of using what it provides and gives me instead of what people with Vision would do. Now that I say that, I should have done a test on my Anemo ability."

He touched his chest where he felt Anemo enter his body. Eula noticed it as she spoke up.

"If you want, you can try it out right now. Maybe on that dandelion."

She pointed to a dandelion nearby. Naofumi turned to see it. As he nodded, he approached the dandelion as he recalled what Eula said to him about her point of using an Elemental Skill.

He needs to build up the energy to use an Elemental Skill, but if he wishes to do an Elemental Burst like the one Eula used when they first met then he'll need a lot more energy.

Naofumi can get energy by absorbing elemental particles and orbs to build up energy.

He can obtain it by using elemental skills or by defeating enemies. There was also a chance that, when attacking with his weapon, he could generate elemental energy.

While thinking of this, Naofumi recalled something he could do with the Elemental Skill. It was one of the three strengthening methods he looked up: energy boost.

The method, as he said, he can channel his own life force to feel and manipulate. It adds an EP bar to his status as he needs to properly learn how to use his life force. Just because he can now feel it, doesn't mean he's a natural at it. He heard of methods of using life force back home but he wonders if it really works.

Perhaps there must be someone in Teyvat who can use life force, but he can ask Eula once he tests his Elemental Skill. He held up his shield, gathering his energy to create an Anemo attack. Anemo was being gathered around his shield as it formed a huge, flat shield, but with Anemo energy.

It caused anything within 10 feet to be blown to his shield as the dandelion seeds were blown within the shield. Once Naofumi felt that the shield gathered enough Anemo energy he unleashed everything inside as it created an air cannon shield. The shield attacks anything within the direction it was sent.

It hit a tree nearby and broke a good chunk of wood. Naofumi blew a whistle at what he can now do with his Anemo ability.

"Not bad, not bad at all. Air Cannon Shield, I think that name fits for my Anemo attack."

Eula nodded as she looked at the pathway the air shield blew to. She can see scattered dandelion seeds all over.

"I think it sounds perfect after seeing that. Do you want to continue testing it out or do you wish to continue walking through the woods?"

"I think I'm good, I can keep practicing on either Hilichurls or slimes."

"If you say so. Oh, don't use it on Anemo slimes, they are completely immune to their own element."

"Got it!"

The two then continue to make their way out of the woods, and Naofumi notices the city of Mondstadt now looks closer. He can see the bridge that leads to the city. Eula then noticed something as she couldn't help but speak.

"Ah! So today her patrol route is here! That makes things easier for my vengeance!"

Naofumi was confused by what Eula said until he heard running footsteps coming towards the two of them. He turns and sees a young woman shorter than Eula.

She looks very energetic as she wears a jumper-like outfit composed of dark brown shorts, a red top that has only a hood and sleeves, a white and brown top with a crest in gold on the front, red stockings, and white thigh-high boots embellished with gold linings and symbols.

She also wears a leather belt with two small bags, and a red gem that seems like her Pyro Vision attached with feathers. She wore gloves, a small belt on her right thigh, and gold-framed goggles. Her most distinguishing feature is the headband with the large red bow that rests on her head, resembling the shape of bunny ears.

She stops in front of Eula as her face shows extreme happiness of just seeing her.

"Eula! Did your patrol route not have many Hilichurls, slimes, or bandits to take care of? Or were they too easy to beat? Oh! Hello! Are you new here? Your clothes don't match anymore I know of."

The young woman greeted Naofumi before asking if he was from Mondstadt or not. Naofumi let out an awkward chuckle as he looked at Eula. She notices this and sighs as she walks up to her.

"Amber, let me introduce you to a new friend of mine. This is Naofumi Iwatani, a foreigner from a faraway land. Naofumi, this is Amber, a friend of mine and a fellow knight, an Outrider."

The woman named Amber gasps when hearing that Naofumi is Eula's new friend; she inspects him more observantly. To Naofumi, it makes sense why she is looking at him up close; she is Eula's friend, whom Eula spoke of highly with a bit of her vengeance.

After a moment of being looked at Amber nodded in agreement. She even offers a handshake.

"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Iwatani! Thank you for being friends with Eula! I'm glad she got another friend she can talk to! For your information, I am the only Outrider in the Knights of Favonius. You can count on me to protect Mondstadt by scouting outside the city!"

Naofumi shakes her hand as he introduces himself.

"It's nice to meet you too, Amber. Eula told me so much about you. She even mentions you're one of the few people who didn't mind Eula or her background."

This caused Eula to glare at Naofumi for mentioning that to Amber, but Amber immediately hugs Eula.

"Aww Eula, thanks!"

"Hmph! I was just saying how helpful you have been to me! Mark my words Naofumi, vengeance will be mine!"

Naofumi just snorted as it irritated Eula. Amber laughs, seeing Naofumi not bothered by her threat, which means he has already received a few from Eula.

"So Mr. Iwatani, what brings you here to Mondstadt? Are you visiting a friend or family? Trying the local specialties here? I can recommend Sticky Honey Roast! Or maybe thinking of moving here? I'm sure we can find a place for you here."

Her suggestions made Naofumi and Eula face each other, giving each other a look of confirmation. Naofumi does think Amber should know of his situation as Eula thinks the same. With a nod from Naofumi, confirming that Eula can tell Amber the truth, Eula gives him a thankful nod as she turns back to Amber.

"Amber, what I'm going to say sounds unbelievable, even though it was unbelievable to me at first. But… Naofumi here is from another world, a completely different world outside of Teyvat."

Once Eula said the truth to Amber silence followed, but you can still hear the breeze and birds chirping. Amber had a blank look on her face as she turned from Eula to Naofumi a few times. It was when she noticed the shield in Naofumi's arm, a wind-looking shield.

"Wait… Like a world that has something that we don't have, or the other way around? A completely different place?"

Eula nodded as she glanced at Naofumi.

"I'm sure you notice he doesn't have a Vision, just a shield that seems like it's stuck on his arm."

Amber nodded as she did notice those two points. Eula gave Naofumi another nod as he put his shield on his back. He knew the power came from within him but he felt it would be more effective when he used his shield.

But he also knew that if he was going to convince Amber of his being from another world, he had to use a skill that could only be accessed through Visions. He then raised his arm in the direction of the nearby lake. He activated his Elemental Skill as he gathered enough energy to launch another air shield to the lake, which created waves until it disappeared.

Amber watched with wide eyes as she saw Naofumi do an Elemental Skill without an Anemo Vision, even the green gem on his shield didn't glow at all.

But to ensure the truth was true, he also changed his shield to the Anemo Shield. Amber watches as his shield changes its form to what looks to be wind to Anemo.

"You did that, without using a Vision! And if Eula says that you're from another world…"

She slowly turns to Naofumi, unknowing to the two of what she is going to say.

"That's amazing! The way you use Anemo that took the form of your shield! And that your actual shield turns into something like an Anemo Vision! What kind of shield is that? And who are you?"

"I'm the Shield Hero."

His answer got Amber more confused as Eula quickly got Amber up to date with what Naofumi told her. Once Eula was finished explaining, Amber understood.

"This is so much to take in. But what I've seen so far just proves it. Although I had never heard about a Shield Hero or anything about your legendary shield."

Naofumi couldn't help but be curious and wonder why he was summoned to a nation that hadn't heard of his title or weapon. He even wondered if he was summoned to the wrong nation. But he suddenly had an idea.

"Maybe the Anemo Archon could help me! Perhaps Barbatos knew a place or had information about the Shield Hero. Could both of you let me meet him?"

The moment he said that, Eula and Amber looked a bit dejected about the Anemo Archon.

"Naofumi, it isn't that simple. You see, nobody has seen Lord Barbatos in nearly 500 years. It is impossible to even talk to him."

Naofumi was surprised by this information, a god that had not been seen in that many years. But at the same time, he was disappointed that he couldn't talk to Barbatos.

He couldn't help but think back on the lack of Shield Hero.

"I wonder if that was why the shield page was blank. Nobody had ever heard of a Shield Hero."

Naofumi muttered to himself as he looked towards the city. An idea came to him. Perhaps he was summoned to ensure the world knows his name and the title of Shield Hero.

"Well, I guess I can start making a name for myself. Is there something in the city where I can start helping people?"

He asked as Amber offered one to him.

"You can join the Adventurers' Guild. It can give you commissions that involve helping people while getting Mora for completing each commission."

Naofumi liked the idea and was relieved that there was a guild in Teyvat. It was a good way to start earning Mora and helping around Mondstadt. And unlock more shields during his time here for the time being.

"Well, could I ask for help from two knights? I believe you both are the best to show me around the city."

Naofumi asks as Amber is more willing to help someone new to Mondstadt while Eula agrees to help him get around the city. With that, the three of them made their way to the bridge, scaring off pigeons, causing a little boy to be mad at the three. While Naofumi absorbs a feather.

After calming him down they all enter the city. The boy stayed at the bridge waiting for the pigeons to come back.
