Chapter 137: A Bit Is A Bit
It seemed the relationship between Brandon and the Spade Territory had taken a turn for the better, contrary to worsening. Perhaps the Spade Territory’s representatives had identified Brandon as an adversary worth their attention.
What calculations and decisions were they making on their end? I wondered.
Before I could finish my thoughts, Victor spoke up.
“Euphemia Grimwood. And Beast King Brandon Kruger. Our demand is for the return of our ‘Saint,’ but in this situation, I can’t do much myself. I’d like to return and shift the responsibility to those above me. May we be allowed to retreat?”
Ah, a sound judgment.
Even Judge Euphemia Grimwood couldn’t help but award Victor Illyrius a point for that.
“Victor, was it?”
Before Brandon could say anything, Lex Asuka stepped forward. The youthful, busty lioness's sudden intervention surprised only Victor’s two companions.
It seemed Leopold’s nephew had resolved himself.
Displaying neither fear, astonishment, suspicion, nor confusion, he merely wore a nonchalant smile.
Lex, of course, took no notice.
“I would prefer not to see such barbarians, who intrude on others' territories with their forces, presume they can converse with our King. If you have an envoy and you are their representative, I shall speak as the King’s envoy.”
Lex said this with utmost confidence, and Brandon nodded in satisfaction, stepping back to stand beside me.
“Very well, our strategist. I’ll leave it to you.”
Why they felt the need to whisper to me was unclear, but shrugging in resignation, I replied.
“Our Nine-Tail is quite remarkable too. Despite having mingled with us for a while, she hasn’t made a single friend. She’s on par with a lioness, don’t you think?”
Neither Kairine nor Lex had any friends.
I thought my retort was quite sharp, but Brandon simply raised an eyebrow, then smiled faintly and continued.
“No, Lex Asuka, you have someone in Euphemia as a friend.”
Indeed, this left me quite flummoxed.
Like a child caught in a field, I could only raise my hands in exasperation. Well, Brandon Kruger earned a point for that.
In the midst of our playful banter with Brandon, Lex and Victor finished their discussion, and the three humans turned on their heels and retreated.
Of course, the “Healing Saint” was still in our possession.
Victor hadn’t even spared a glance or word for Mizetta. It was easy to label him as cold-hearted, but he was undoubtedly competent. He chose not to display personal relationships at that moment.
Though, I did hear about Mizetta from her directly.
But I digress.
“So, the humans have retreated. What are your thoughts on the next steps, Euphemia Grimwood?”
The lioness, with her usual vacant expression, turned to me.
It was oddly comforting to see her remain the same. Strange as it might be, I found myself wanting to see her tearful face from before once more, even as I also wished never to see it again.
“As for what comes next, I’ll discuss it soon—but before that, let me express my most important sentiment. Lex Asuka, Brandon Kruger, and Nellest. And the Beast King’s army waiting behind. To all of you,”
I said with a bright smile.
“Thank you. You’ve been a great help. Well, we helped each other, so it’s a mutual benefit.”
“...No, even without your assistance, we would have defeated Randall.”
The stoic lioness interjected.
“But you wouldn’t have been able to get along with the Spade Territory, would you?”
“That might be true.”
“And if we had fallen, it would have been problematic for you too.”
“That’s true, but... I remain unconvinced.”
“Well, that’s fine.”
I patted Lex on the head as the Beast King laughed with satisfaction.
“It’s wonderful to see you again. That fortress was impressive. I’m glad you relied on us and communicated that to us. The Spade Territory was likely at its wit’s end, and it wouldn’t have been fun if they solved it alone.”
“Right?”
“Your gratitude is noted. We, too, wish to be good neighbors... and I suspect you have something interesting planned. Let us be a part of it.”
Brandon, with a mischievous tone, seemed to have changed a bit. He didn’t used to show such ease.
“Then, shall we consider this the time for retaliation?”
The unchanged lioness asked.
However, retaliation was not on my agenda.
So, I grinned and responded.
“Far from it. We’re about to begin serious negotiations.”
It wasn’t enjoyable to bully Leopold’s nephew. In fact, it was a bit pitiful. Well, just a bit.
There were others I wanted to give a hard time to.
