Chapter 305: Breakfast in Valhalla (2)

Mira looked at Frodina, her gaze conveying praise for having endured so far, and gave a gentle nod signaling that she would handle the rest.

Seeing Mira's reassuring response, Frodina offered a weak smile and leaned back, clearly drained of energy.

「Sweet…so sweet..!」

「Yes, there's nothing like a sweet breakfast…」

Elivina and Eletina took a bite of french toast as soon as they began eating. The other sisters also did the same, savoring the sweetness with delight. Even Alfina looked happy as she ate, likely also having a bit of a sweet tooth after all.

Just calling it delicious did not do it justice. That french toast had been made with an exceedingly rare type of egg, freshly baked bread, and Frodina's special way of preparing it all. It was miles ahead of anything Mira had tried before.

「Ohh, this is heavenly!」

Just one bite was enough for Mira to know how different this was. Some time had passed since the slices had been fried, so the interior felt even more pudding-like. It really felt like an actual dessert rather than breakfast.

Eletina ate slowly, savoring every bite as long as possible. Frodina nodded to herself, satisfied with how it came out. Shalwina was not just entranced by the taste, but also enjoyed the jelly-like texture. Elivina struggled to conceal a grin, feeling like they were overreacting over french toast. Celestina wanted to save the best for last, so she only took one bite of french toast before quickly going through everything else.

And then there was Christina, who had already devoured all her french toast and was now eyeing Celestina's plate like a hawk. Sadly, there would be no opportunity to attempt stealing some, as her opponent was Celestina the weapon master, whose hands could turn a humble butter knife into a lethal weapon. Christina knew how badly things would end if she tried that.

However, she also noticed that Celestina's guard was weaker against things happening the other way around, so Christina had been quietly offloading her vegetables onto Celestina's plate instead.

There were a lot of long-held emotions swirling quietly around the dining hall, but Bruce was oblivious to it all, making lighthearted comments about how good the food was.

After some time, they reached what could be considered the middle point of their breakfast. Everyone had eaten in different ways, but they had at least tried a bit of everything, except for Alfina. Mira had been watching the entire time, and noticed that the eldest sister had not touched the salad stew at all.

(Maybe it's even worse than I imagined…)

Alfina had been constantly turning to glare at Frodina, in what felt like a silent interrogation. Each time that happened, Frodina would turn to look at Mira, seeking salvation.

Frodina had let Mira decide when to enact their plan, as they had anticipated, something like this would happen and Frodina would be out of the picture after serving. And also, because the effect would be the strongest if Mira brought it up.

(At least now I see why she was so confident about this salad stew dish. It's definitely worth all the praise.)

Still mulling over the best moment to enact their plan, Mira ate a bit more of the salad stew.

The stew made with a beef soup base, with various spices and vegetables, then thickened with potatoes grown in Valhalla, complimented the fresh vegetables cut into bite sized chunks perfectly, greatly elevating the dish. The spices also gave clear accents of flavor, which were refined by the sweetness of the tomatoes.

(No matter how much someone hates tomatoes, they should be able to eat this.)

Mira had also seen the potential of the salad stew, and fully believed Frodina's claim that having just one bite would be enough for anyone to crave more.

But that first bite was the crucial part. Alfina was nowhere near trying it, she even refused to look at her bowl, instead turning to Frodina, her eyes demanding to know why Frodina was harassing her like that.

Those constant stares also made it harder for Frodina to feel at ease, and she had hardly eaten anything from her own plate.

With time, Frodina's face began to turn pale, hardly enduring the wait until Mira would save her. Soon, she would reach her limit.

(I promise I'll make all your kindness and efforts pay off.)

Frodina knew that Alfina would react that way, but she had still wanted to help Alfina be able to enjoy tomatoes. Mira would not allow those feelings to go to waste, so she gave Frodina a reassuring nod, ready to enact their plan.

But before Mira could say anything, Christina held her empty salad bowl and stood up, unaware of the plan. Then she headed to the stew bowl, her gait airy and carefree.

「Meat has a higher density, so it likes to sink to the bottom~」

She had switched targets from Celestina's french toast to the pieces of beef remaining in the stew pot. After taking off the lid, she held the ladle and began digging around the bottom of the pot, and just as she wanted, found a trove of beef.

「See? Just like I predicted.」

Now that her bowl was full of beef, she beamed a radiant smile. There was nothing that made her happier than following her cravings. Mira also started grinning, but in a more devilish way, seeing this as the perfect chance to spring into action.

「Now, now, Christina. Beef might be good, but you shouldn't neglect your vegetables. Don't think I didn't see you shoving all of them away to Celestina's bowl.」

Mira stood up while calling her out, and Christina let out an audible 「Wawahh!」 while her shoulders twitched. At the same time, everyone's eyes focused on her.

「So that's what happened. And I was wondering why there were so many…」

The main victim, Celestina, stared at Christina with disapproval while holding her bowl of salad stew. In a way, it was more surprising that she had not noticed, but that was simply because the french toast she saved for later was all she could think of.

At least Celestina did not seem to hold much of a grudge past that. The other sisters mostly shook their heads, already familiar with Christina's antics

And then Mira made her move.

「Alright, give me that.」

Knowing this was her best chance, Mira walked up to Christina, took her bowl, and then poured a large amount of tomatoes from the pot on top.

「You need to eat vegetables too. And especially these tomatoes since I picked them and cut them myself. They're delicious, aren't they?」

Mira said that while holding out Christina's bowl, buried in a pile of tomatoes. She just stared vacantly at it, her hopes dashed. But then someone else spoke loudly in shock.

「What? You did that, Master?!」

It was Elivina. She had noticed that the tomatoes were cut more roughly than usual, when Frodina usually made very regular pieces. That was why she reacted so quickly.

「Well, it'd be a shame if we didn't finish them then.」

Elivina said that, trying to act like she was doing it out of concern, and went up to the pot with her bowl.

「Ah, a serving of tomatoes for Elivina too then.」

Mira snatched Elivina's bowl and filled it with tomatoes just like before, and Elivina was actually shocked now.

「Ah, Master, you served me…yourself…」

Elivina was mortified that she had accidentally pushed Mira into a serving role, but Mira laughed it off, telling her it was alright. Mira also added a few chunks of meat to the bowl, and returned it.

「Th-Thank you so much.」

Elivina happily took the bowl back. The other sisters had seen all of that, and they began standing up one after another.

「Oh, we might actually get through the whole pot at this rate.」

This was a very rare occasion for the sisters, so they all lined up with their bowls, wanting to have more of the tomatoes hand picked by their master. They were not as obsessed as Alfina, but they still held Mira in very high regard.

And Bruce also snuck in amongst them. He was in a similar situation, being able to receive something from Danbulf the Army, the Wiseman he admired and looked up to so much.
