Chapter 289: Chapter 288: Breaking Through
Time ticked away, and soon, a quarter of an hour had passed.
In the battle, four of the Mist's Special Jōnin who had surrounded Qingming had fallen, while Qingming himself had only suffered minor injuries. He had even healed these superficial wounds with his improved Healing Jutsu during the fight.
The results proved that when one reaches a certain level of strength, numbers alone cease to be effective. These Mist Special Jōnin, each with their unique strengths, would ordinarily have no trouble teaming up against a regular Jōnin. But Qingming was far from ordinary.
Qingming's skills included a near level 7 Swordsmanship, an A-level Rasengan that required no hand seals, and even the ability to form hand seals one-handed—skills that, for most Jōnin, would be hidden aces in their deck. Yet Qingming wielded all of these, combined with the potent perception of his Three-Tomoe Sharingan. There was no way the Mist Special Jōnin could stand a chance.
With a slash that grazed a Mist Special Jōnin's chest, Qingming suddenly distanced himself. At that moment, a thin mist began to rise, quickly thickening. With the night sky already casting shadows, the sudden veil of mist obscured the surroundings even further.
Qingming recognized the Jutsu immediately—the Water Style: Hidden Mist Jutsu, a signature of the Hidden Mist Village. During the battle, some of the Mist Special Jōnin had tried to use this technique to obscure his vision, but each time, he would locate them and forcefully disrupt their concentration, breaking the technique before it could take effect.
Now, however... Qingming's Sharingan spun rapidly as he scanned the mist for the caster, but no one among the present Mist Special Jōnin appeared to be the one performing it. The answer was clear: other Mist ninja had arrived to provide support, hiding in the shadows to unleash the Jutsu.
Observing the white fog that now filled the air and sensing the watchful eyes within it, Qingming gave a cold smile, raising his hands to form hand seals. Just then, several kunai shot toward him.
Forced to halt his hand seals, Qingming dodged the kunai with a few swift movements.
Boom!
A sudden explosion resounded; the kunai had been rigged with Explosive Tags. Flames briefly lit up the fog, and the blast wave opened a clear area around him, yet in an instant, the dense mist returned to fill the gap, as though it were alive.
Meanwhile, Qingming's movements had alerted the Mist Special Jōnin to his position, triggering a renewed barrage of kunai. Qingming's ears perked up, helping him to locate the incoming weapons. However, the mist prevented him from immediately identifying whether any of these kunai were also armed with Explosive Tags, forcing him to keep dodging cautiously.
Just as he landed, yet another wave of attacks approached.
One of the Mist Special Jōnin was evidently skilled in Silent Killing, as they could precisely pinpoint his location within the fog through subtle sounds. This would explain why their attacks were so relentless.
Qingming had already guessed the enemy's strategy: they intended to keep him constantly on the defensive, eventually exhausting him, leaving him vulnerable to a decisive strike.
In theory, it was a solid tactic. Continuous defense would inevitably lead to a misstep, and once he slipped, they could strike him down. But could they truly maintain such pressure?
In reality, the answer was no.
After dodging two more waves of attacks, Qingming leaped onto a nearby tree, evading the third wave. Standing on the tree branch, he swiftly formed hand seals, unleashing the Wind Style: Great Breakthrough Jutsu just before the fourth wave arrived.
With a deep inhale, he unleashed a massive gust of wind. What began as a small vortex quickly expanded, covering an area of several dozen meters. The Mist's attacks, still en route, were swept up and blown away by the vortex.
Sensing the shifts in the mist caused by the cyclone, Qingming smirked, intensifying the windstorm until it surged outward. Previously, even if he had mastered Wind Style: Great Breakthrough, he might not have been able to control the vortex with such precision. However, now that his mastery over Wind Style: Wind Blade had reached level 6, his grasp over wind chakra's shape and nature transformations had deepened significantly, making it possible to perform this feat.
This was akin to the difference between an ordinary user of Water Style: Water Formation Wall who could only defend from one direction, and Tobirama Senju, who could protect himself from all sides. Ultimately, it was a matter of proficiency.
With his technique now at a high level, the Great Breakthrough blew away the surrounding fog in an instant, as if clearing the sky. Although several Mist ninja attempted to replenish the mist with their water-style chakra, they were unable to maintain it. This was understandable, given that Qingming had poured two thousand chakra points into this one move, amplifying his technique to the level of a natural disaster.
Within a few breaths, the mist was gone.
Surveying the scattered Mist ninjas crouching or standing on branches around him, Qingming let a mocking smile spread across his face. "The so-called Bloody Mist Village… Not so impressive after all."
None of the Mist ninjas, neither Special Jōnin nor Chūnin, were provoked into reckless attacks by his derisive smile or taunting words. They were seasoned, and none moved impulsively.
Qingming was slightly disappointed, but only slightly.
Well, if they refused to attack first, he'd make the first move himself.
In a flash, Qingming appeared before one of the Mist Chūnin.
Whoosh!
His short sword slashed toward the opponent's neck. However, just as the sword was about to reach its mark, a cluster of shuriken flew his way. Qingming, catching sight of the attack, leaned back slightly, easily evading it. This gave the Chūnin before him a moment to react; he quickly tossed a smoke bomb and retreated.
Seeing this, Qingming didn't pursue him. Instead, he used another Body Flicker Technique, targeting a different Mist Chūnin. During the earlier confrontation, there had been no Chūnin in the mix. Now that there were, he was more than happy to go for the weaker targets first.
Of course, it was likely that the Mist Special Jōnin had called these Chūnin over for just this reason, but it made no difference to him; his mission was to eliminate them all, and the order in which he did so was inconsequential.
