Chapter 106: Chapter 106 – Trial of Ash and Flame
The wind howled across the jagged cliffs as Kael and his companions descended Obsidian's Spine. Though the Warden had been sealed, the world had shifted—threads of fate reknitted in haste, straining to accommodate the emergence of a force long forgotten. The trio was quiet as they navigated the narrow ledges and broken trails, each step taking them further from the tomb and deeper into the consequences of its unsealing.
Word traveled fast in this realm.
By the time they reached the highland borders of the Sapphire Vale, whispers had already arrived before them. Townsfolk bowed low, uncertain whether to offer tribute or seek sanctuary. Many merely watched Kael in silence, awe and fear etched across their faces. To them, he was no longer just a cultivator, no longer just a pactbearer.
He was something else.
1. The Summons
It was at the Watcher's Crossing—a stone bridge that spanned the ancient chasm between the free provinces and the domain of the Azure Council—that their escort found them. Ten figures, each cloaked in flowing robes marked with the sigils of the Five Seats. Their leader, a tall woman with eyes like mirrorsteel, stepped forward.
"Kael of Hollow Flame, bearer of two pacts and one unknown sigil," she said without bowing. "You are summoned to stand before the Azure Council. By right of pact, by right of power—and by suspicion of heresy."
Lin stepped forward, but Kael's hand on her shoulder stopped her.
"I'll go," Kael said. "But not as a prisoner."
"Then walk with dignity," the envoy replied. "But know that the Council has already begun deliberations. Many want your head. A few want your knowledge. None are neutral."
Kael said nothing. He simply walked.
2. The Citadel of Verdicts
The Azure Council's fortress was unlike any Kael had seen. Forged from sapphire crystal and mountain iron, it rose from the heart of the capital like a blade driven into the earth. Its halls shimmered with runes that altered with the hour, and its air was scented with judgment.
As Kael entered the outer sanctum, whispers erupted among the gathered.
"He looks just like the vision…"
"That sigil… it wasn't in the archives."
"Too young. Too dangerous."
Aelira and Lin were forced to wait in the Holding Grove, a chamber of stasis vines meant to protect and observe those of interest. Kael was led alone into the chamber of firelight—where the Five sat upon their thrones.
Elder Vayel of Wind.
High Mistress Selene of Flame.
Marshal Thorn of Iron.
Mistress Quora of Sight.
And the Masked One, whose name had been lost to time.
The Masked One was the first to speak. "You've returned from the mountain alive. That in itself would earn you infamy. But you've also returned changed."
Kael said, "The Warden is sealed again."
Selene's eyes burned. "Is he? Or did you simply become his new vessel?"
Kael stepped forward, letting the light touch his arm. The sigil glowed—an amalgam of fire, shadow, and star.
"I carry no one's will but my own."
Thorn grunted. "Spoken like a liar."
Mistress Quora rose. "We've seen what the Warden could do. Mountains turned to glass. Cities erased. You carry part of him now, Kael—even if unwillingly. That makes you either a weapon… or a threat."
Kael's gaze was steady. "Or a shield."
3. The Memory Trial
Mistress Quora gestured, and the center of the hall ignited. A ring of truthflame rose—a rare artifact capable of conjuring real-time memories from one's soul. Kael stepped into the circle without hesitation.
Images burst to life.
—Kael standing at the sarcophagus.
—The Warden rising.
—Kael invoking both his pacts, summoning light not to destroy, but to seal.
—The final moment: a choice, a whisper, and Kael's voice saying, "I choose hope."
The flames died. Silence followed.
Even Thorn said nothing.
Then Vayel spoke. "He chose not to take power. He refused it."
Mistress Selene, ever cold, simply muttered, "He may have refused today. But what of tomorrow?"
Kael replied, "If you fear what I could become, help me ensure I never walk that path. Guide me. Don't cage me. Don't turn me into a prophecy just because you lack the courage to break your own."
There was a long silence.
Then, the Masked One raised a hand.
"By the will of the Five, we grant Kael of Hollow Flame provisional status as Guardian of the Threshold. He will walk the lands, not as servant nor sovereign, but as watchman. If the Warden ever stirs again—it will be his burden to act."
"And if he fails?" Selene asked.
"Then the Flame dies. And we all with it."
4. The Shadows Beyond
After the trial, Kael stood alone on the balcony of the citadel. Lin approached him, her face still pale, but her eyes strong.
"You really meant it," she said.
"I did."
"What now?"
Kael looked to the stars. "We walk forward. There are other prisons. Other truths. And someone is waking them. The Warden… was only the first echo."
From below the citadel, a rider approached—cloaked in storm-gray, bearing a scroll sealed in silver wax.
Kael took it.
His eyes narrowed as he read.
"Something's stirring in the Eastern Wastes," he muttered. "They're calling it… the Mirrorwake."
Aelira appeared beside them. "More myths?"
Kael smiled, but there was no joy in it.
"No. Just more warnings we didn't listen to."
