Chapter 20: The Sovereign’s Dominion
A cold wind swept through the city as silence fell upon the battlefield. Katsumi stood motionless, his violet eyes glowing beneath the ominous shadows swirling around him. The hunters who had once mocked his weakness now stood frozen, unable to move beneath the crushing weight of his presence. They weren't fighting a man anymore. They were standing before a force beyond comprehension.
The guild leader, still gripping his weapon, struggled to remain standing. His body trembled, not just from fear but from the sheer power Katsumi exuded. "What... are you?" he finally choked out, voice strained. Katsumi's gaze flickered toward him, unimpressed. "I am what your world tried to erase. And now, I am its reckoning."
Without warning, a squad of elite hunters leaped into action, unleashing a barrage of elemental attacks. Fire, ice, and lightning converged toward Katsumi in a dazzling display of power. But before they could even make contact, the shadows at his feet expanded outward, swallowing the attacks into the void. The abyss consumed all.
Katsumi moved in an instant. His figure blurred, appearing behind one of the hunters before they could react. A single slash of his katana, and the man collapsed, his weapon shattering like glass. Not even a scream escaped his lips. The other hunters barely had time to register what had happened before the shadows exploded outward again, disarming them effortlessly.
The guild leader roared, charging forward in one final act of desperation. His blade, glowing with divine energy, struck downward—but Katsumi caught it between his fingers. The impact sent a shockwave through the ground, yet Katsumi remained unmoved. He sighed. "I warned you."
With a mere flick of his wrist, the sword shattered, its fragments dissolving into darkness. The guild leader stumbled back, eyes wide with disbelief. Katsumi raised his hand, and the abyss answered. Tendrils of shadow wrapped around the fallen hunters, lifting them into the air, their struggles meaningless. They weren't his enemies. They were his subjects.
Katsumi turned his gaze toward the city, where thousands watched in horror. He could hear their whispers, their fear-laced murmurs of what he had become. A monster. A god. The Shadow Sovereign. He had no intention of ruling with tyranny, but if they feared him, it would make things easier. Fear was a powerful tool.
"Listen well!" Katsumi's voice boomed, amplified by the abyss itself. "I do not seek to destroy this world, but I will not allow it to stand against me." His shadows pulsed, darkening the sky above. "The weak will kneel. The strong will either join me… or fall." His decree sent chills down the spines of everyone present.
A long silence followed before someone, a lone hunter among the crowd, slowly fell to one knee. Then another. And another. Within moments, dozens of hunters bowed before him, their weapons cast aside. They understood. Their world had changed. The old order was finished. A new era had begun.
Katsumi turned, his gaze shifting toward the horizon. He could feel it—a presence beyond the city, watching, waiting. The true enemies were stirring. The abyss had given him power, but his war was far from over. This was only the beginning.
