Shadow Slave: Prince of Fiction

Chapter 2: The Threshold of the Nightmare

As Elias wandered aimlessly through the streets, a particular building caught his attention. It was a stark, gray structure with a faded sign above the door: POLICE STATION.

His breath caught. He remembered this scene vividly. This was the moment when Sunny—the protagonist of this world—entered the station to report that he had been infected by the Nightmare Spell.

His thoughts were interrupted as he noticed a movement at the edge of his vision. A young man with disheveled dark hair was walking purposefully toward the police station.

Elias' eyes widened. "That's him… Sunny! It's at the beginning of the story."

Elias wanted to stop him, wanted to say something, but he didn't know how. What could he even say?

'Hey, Sunny, I know you and have knowledge of your future?'

He would only be labeled as insane, destroying any chance of developing a connection with him.

Sunny paused just before the door, took a deep breath, and then entered. Elias silently watched him as the door clicked shut behind him.

He knew what would happen next: Sunny would explain his situation to the police officer, and then he would begin his journey into the world of nightmares.

"This is the moment that changes everything," Elias whispered.

Suddenly, a heavy fatigue overcame him. His body felt heavy, his legs trembled, and his head seemed to be weighed down by some invisible force.

"This must be it," he muttered. "The Nightmare Spell... I'm really infected."

A shiver ran through him as he realized that this wasn't just a game or a story. It was reality, and the price of mistakes was high. But instead of panicking, he straightened his shoulders and walked toward the door of the police station.

Elias entered the police station and immediately felt the oppressive atmosphere. The reception area was dimly lit, and the fluorescent lights on the ceiling hummed softly.

The air was stale, and the metallic smell made him feel uncomfortable. Behind the counter sat a weary-looking police officer with ashen skin, staring blankly at a screen.

Elias took a deep breath to suppress his nervousness and approached the counter.

"Name?" the officer asked without lifting his eyes from the screen.

"Elias Solace," Elias answered firmly.

The officer furrowed his brow, pushed the screen aside, and scrutinized him skeptically. "What do you want?"

Elias swallowed hard before speaking. "I'm infected with the Nightmare Spell."

The impact of those words was immediate. The officer froze, and his eyes widened in shock. "What?" he asked, as though he hadn't heard him correctly.

"I'm infected," Elias repeated, a little quieter this time.

The officer jumped abruptly from his chair. "How long?"

"Several days," Elias confessed.

The officer stared at him incredulously. "Damn! Another one? How is this possible?" He ripped a button off his desk and pressed it with more force than necessary. "Code Black! I repeat, Code Black!" he yelled into the microphone.

A siren-like alarm began to wail softly, and two more officers burst into the room from a side door. The officer behind the counter continued, "This is the second one today! What's going on out there?" He shot Elias a nervous glance. "We don't have time. Get him to one of the rooms. Now, hurry!"

'Hmm, the second one?! Could it be… Is Sunny also infected?'

Before he could think further, the two officers roughly grabbed Elias by the arms and pulled him into the back of the station.

The cold of the building seeped through his clothing, and the harsh light of the fluorescent bulbs made everything seem unreal. The metallic sound of their footsteps echoed through the halls until they stopped in front of a heavy steel door.

"Inside," one of the officers ordered, shoving the door open. Behind it was a stark room—an empty metal chair bolted to the center, with a lone lightbulb flickering weakly above.

"Sit down," the other officer instructed curtly. Elias followed the command wordlessly, his heart pounding faster with each passing moment.

No sooner had he sat down than he felt cold restraints snap around his wrists and ankles. The chains were heavy and tugged at his skin, as though they were trying to anchor him in place.

The officers left the room silently, and Elias heard the dull sound of the door being locked behind him. He was alone—or so he thought—until the door opened again.

A woman entered, her features tired and worn. She held a tablet in her hand and gave Elias a fleeting glance before she began speaking.

"You're infected," she said, without waiting for a response. Her voice was flat, as if she had delivered this speech countless times before.

"That means you'll soon enter the world of nightmares. There are no rules there, no protection, and no second chances. If you die, you die—here and there."

Elias nodded silently.

The woman paused briefly before continuing:

"Listen, this is your last moment in reality. If you survive the nightmare, you'll become an Awakened. And if not…" She shrugged. "Then it's over."

"Is there anything I need to know?" Elias asked, his voice surprisingly calm.

The woman looked at him, and for a moment, a flicker of pity appeared in her eyes.

"If you're in there, don't be fooled. No matter how real it seems, no matter how tempting it appears—everything is your enemy. And remember: Surviving is all that matters."

Elias nodded, his mind racing. The warnings were exactly like in the story, but now it felt frighteningly real.

The woman turned off the tablet and headed for the door. "That's it. Get ready."

No sooner had the door closed behind her than Elias began to feel an overwhelming fatigue. His head sank heavily against the backrest of the chair, and his eyelids felt like lead.

"This is it," he murmured. His voice sounded distant, as if coming from another world.

His mind began to drift, and the reality around him seemed to liquefy. The walls of the room blurred and dissolved into a swirling mist that thickened with each passing moment.

A cold wind brushed against his skin, and Elias felt himself falling. The ground beneath his feet vanished, and an eerie darkness swallowed him whole.

When he opened his eyes, the world he knew was gone. Instead, he stood in a surreal landscape. The ground beneath him was black as obsidian, threaded with pulsating red veins that looked like glowing scars. Above him stretched a sky that resembled an endless vortex of darkness and light, unnatural and impossible.

"This is it," Elias whispered. "The Dream Realm."

But before he had a chance to examine his surroundings more closely, he heard a deep, guttural growl that sliced through the air.

Elias' heart began to race. His hands instinctively reached for a weapon, but he had nothing on him.

He was alone, and the game had begun.
