Chapter 21: Blast
Ava was in the private Emergency Department. Aiden, Ryan, Daniel, and three more officers were waiting outside. The tension was palpable as they awaited news about Ava's condition.
Soon, a toxicologist came out of the ED. He smiled and said, "Don't worry, she will be alright. It was a small amount of poison," and left without any discussion.
"Should we go in?" Daniel asked, sitting beside Ryan. "Yeah, come on," said Aiden, who was standing. The door was 10 feet away. They were about to go toward the grey door when their eyes caught notice of two people coming from the right corridor.
"Hey, you!" one officer called. They both came toward the officers. One was a male doctor, and the other was a female fully covered. "Who are you, and why are you dressed like a half-nun?" Aiden said.
"Sir, with all due respect, that's an incredibly rude way to talk to a Muslim girl," the male behind her said. "Muslim?" Aiden said, raising both his eyebrows. "I want to see who she is; raise that thing on her face," Aiden added.
Ryan and Daniel beside him said nothing. "Sir, she is not allowed to," the boy spoke. "And who might you be?" Daniel asked the boy. Changing the topic slightly. "I am an intern. You can call me Liam; it's short for William," William said.
He was wearing a blue mask. Daniel nodded. "Where are you going, and what are you doing here?" Ryan questioned. "I am an intern, and so is she. She is new, so I was taking her to the doctor's lounge, but it seems like I am myself not so good with directions," William answered.
As they conversed, a nurse wearing a white uniform appeared, pushing a gurney with a dead body. She smiled brightly. "Oh, hi! I heard you talking about the lounge from a distance, so I thought I'd help." She paused, then said, "Go straight, then turn right, and then it will be on your left."
William and the girl left, and Daniel started to speak to Aiden. The three officers and Ryan were concentrated on both of them. "Why would you talk like that? It's not a sin to be Muslim," Daniel said dramatically.
Aiden gave a short laugh. "I told you not to question me." His smile disappeared. "But for your information," Aiden added, "they looked suspicious, and I was just confirming that it isn't a skit or character playing." "Oh, wow," Daniel said in a bored tone.
"Let's go to the room," Daniel continued while walking toward the room. The silence was shattered by the bomb blast. The bomb was in the room where Ava was being treated. The noise was large and intense, like a scream in one's ear, loud enough to destroy eardrums.
Everyone near the region got hurt, but luckily, most people were fine. Daniel hit the floor hard, his hand on the back of his head. "Sir!" Ryan shouted from a distance, but his voice was absorbed by the loud sound of the bomb blast.
Everyone retreated, running for an exit. "You go, I will bring Daniel," Ryan said to Aiden, and he nodded.
