Chapter 34: Remnants of the Past (6)
The midday sun was staining the blue sky with gold. The streets breathed quietly as beggars and vagabonds went about their daily hustle and bustle. Poison Wind was a nameless figure, lost in the shadows. His eyes were cold, his face was masked, and he watched silently.
No one passing by noticed him.
Poison Wind was a former soldier. He had felt the brutality of war and the cold breath of death up close. After fighting on the front line for three years for nothing, he had been enlightened and, with the help of Poison Shadow, had killed his commander and deserted.
Since then he had joined the organization and, after completing training, had operated with Poison Shadow. Capture the blackmail file on a potential third-rate martial artist... It was the easiest mission he had had in the last year.
Poison Wind suddenly pulled out his dagger and swung it behind him.
As if expecting it, the person behind him dodged the attack by pulling his head back.
"Calm down, it's me."
After confirming that it was his teammate, Poison Wind sheathed his dagger and turned around.
"Do you want to die, Black Poison?"
"I wanted to see if you were doing your duty properly."
Black Poison was another assassin in the team. Like the others in the team, he specialized in poisons. He was known for his poisoned arrows and poison bottles. Like any martial artist specializing in poisons, his inner energy level were not that high.
"Are they really putting us through all this?" Black Poison complained.
"It's not the first time," retorted Poison Wind.
"Our target just became third rate today. It seems strange that the level has dropped so low when we are dealing with first-rate martial artists. Didn't we even assassinate a Master before and throw the whole of Shaanxi into chaos?"
While expertise in martial arts was very important, it did not mean that they were untouchable. Every assassin knew that martial arts were only a supporting force. They were mobilized to kill the target, not to fight a fair fight.
"It doesn't matter what it is. The mission is the mission."
As a former soldier, Poison Wind was very strict about following orders.
"A slave who bites off more than he can swallow. A simple spear cultivator... Why do you take it so seriously?"
"The level of martial arts guarantees nothing."
Black Poison shrugged his shoulders.
"AHHHHHH!" at that moment a scream of pain was heard. Poison Wind and Black Poison's expressions changed as soon as they heard that scream. They immediately raised their heads and looked up at the top of the tall building in front of them.
On the roof of the building, a strangely dressed man holding a spear was chopping one of their teammates, the Black Mamba, with spear thrusts. Since it was a simple mission, the whole team wore leather armor made of reinforced leather instead of expensive armor. This level of armor was like paper against such powerful spear thrusts.
The man's attire was so unremarkable that Poison Wind was stunned. The robe, made of fine silk, was dark blue and decorated with black embroidery. A long black snake was embroidered on the collar. The pantaloons, accessories and shoes looked so ornate that it was definitely not designed for battle.
Blood gushed from a deep cut on the Black Mamba's chest, staining his black outfit red.
Black Mamba managed to push him away with a thrust, but the man turned his wrist slightly and thrust his spear forward at a new angle.
Splash!
"Ah!" the sound of the last scream shook the entire shantytown.
His movements paused as the spear pierced the Black Mamba's throat. The man, expressionless, slashed the Black Mamba once more and kicked it off the roof.
BANG!
Poison Wind grabbed Black Mamba before he hit the ground, but the man had already lost his life. He could see the ground through the hole in his throat.
"Black Mamba!" said Poison Wind, nearly insane with rage.
Immediately he shouldered Black Mamba's body and signaled Black Venom. Black Venom nodded and threw the smoke bombs on his waist to the ground, filling the whole street with fog.
Poff!
The man on the roof jumped to the opposite building and approached the street, but he didn't make it in time. Black Venom and Poison Wind had already disappeared into the void created by the smoke bomb.
"FUCK!"

Due to anxiety and fear caused by lack of training, Baek Yisoo was unable to be stealthy enough as well as taking a lot of damage. After killing the first two, he attacked the third, but because of the sound of footsteps, the assassin notice him and attacked.
He had taken a lot of damage from the battle with him.
The man he had just killed had been defeated so easily because of the lessons he had learned from the previous one. Koo Mihyun's Clothing Set gave her perfect stealth. Everything disappeared, even the sound of footsteps and breathing.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!"
Baek Yisoo didn't wait there any longer and went to the torture room where Minji was.
[You kidnapped the assassins!]
[Mission failed!]
[If you fail to hunt down the assassins within two hours, you will not receive any missions for a month. Attention, if the assassins escape, a manhunt may start!]
Baek Yisoo let out a mouthful of curses when the mission description in the mission window was crossed out. He had missed them all because of his inexperience in assassination. And he had done it despite the set of clothes and the system that gave him absolute secrecy.
When Baek Yisoo didn't find the dead bodies of the two assassins, he ran with all his might towards the torture chamber. He kicked the door down and burst in with his spear.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that Minji and Poison Shadow were still there.
"In two hours I have to get Minji and her mother to safety and find the assassins."
The situation was troubling. Baek Yisoo thought about the system's warnings and realized what the two hours were for. The assassins needed two hours to cover their tracks and leave the city. Before that happened, Baek Yisoo had to find them and eliminate them.
But there was a huge problem.
The back alleys were too big and crowded.
'They must have an operations center if they've been here for a month. They must have secret passages if they escaped with the bodies. If I can find out which direction they went, I can narrow down my search area. But even if I search every single building, it will take months to completely check the back alleys.'
HHe used the drugs in the car to keep Minji unconscious before binding her to his back with bloody chains.
Once he had Minji on his back, he hid his face and cradled the dead body of Poison Shadow. He had no training in tracking. One wrong move and he could have missed the assassins. There is no room for error.
That's why he had to get help from the experts.
