Lu Jijun gazed at Ye Tianxin calmly and replied in a pained voice, “Although she’s my wife, I would not intercede for her since she had done such a terrible thing and I know how important your grandmother is to you. You are free to do whatever you want with her. I will leave the decision to you and will not question it.”
Qin Lili snickered when she heard his reply. She couldn’t tell if she was laughing at how foolishly devoted he was to Ye Linlang or how heartless he was to her.
“Lu Jijun, we’ve been married for more than 10 years, and we’ve weathered a lot of hardships up until today. But now, you have revealed the real you. You have never loved me or our daughter,” she accused.
Lu Jijun shook his head and explained, “Lili, I could help you with anything else but this. We’re talking about attempted murder here. Her grandmother could have died if the nurse hadn’t found out before it was too late. Don’t you understand? Lili, you have committed a crime, and I don’t want to shelter a criminal!”
Qin Lili nodded and appeared fearless now. She had nothing to lose, anyway.
Maintaining her composure, she stood up and straightened her clothes before she walked right up to Ye Tianxin. Without begging for mercy, she said, “Ye Tianxin, I want to have a private moment with Lu Jijun.”
However, Lu Jijun immediately responded and turned her down, “There’s nothing for us to talk about.”
Qin Lili slowly made her way to Lu Jijun and chuckled, “Lu Jijun, what happened 18 years ago…”
“Well, you’re talking about the time when we were drunk, aren’t you?” Lu Jijun bellowed and shot Qin Lili a sullen glance.
“Yes, so let’s take a walk down the memory lane, shall we?” she teased, and her eyes creased into a familiar expression that she usually wore.
Lu Jijun took one glance at Li Qingcang and Ye Tianxin, then he replied, “Could we have a private moment?”
“You have five minutes,” Li Qingcang agreed and led everyone else out of the conference room.
Ye Tianxin and Li Qingcang stood erect next to each other and neither of them uttered a word. The others, too, waited with them at the corridor in silence.
After some time, the door was flung open abruptly and Lu Jijun dashed out frantically. He was pale; his eyes were red from crying. “She…she…,” he stammered, “jumped out of the window…”
Everyone was taken aback with shock, and Li Qingcang stared at him dubiously before asking, “What did you say to her?”
Lu Jijun leaned against the wall, and his trembling lips were completely drained of color as he explained, “I didn’t say anything. She was the one who did all the talking. She said that she can’t go to jail and she can’t allow Qingxin to have a convict as a mother.”
He then slapped his own face violently twice and said reproachfully, “It’s all my fault! I should have grabbed onto her.”
Qin Lili’s eyes were wide open as she lay on the ground, and her expensive fur coat was soaked with blood.
Lu Jijun knelt down before her. When he reached his quivering hands over to check her pulse, he realized that she was still breathing. However, it was getting weaker and weaker.
The medical staff arrived and wheeled Qin Lili to the emergency department.
Lu Jijun sat alone in the corridor outside the operating room in silence. After over 10 minutes had passed, he finally called Lu Qingxin, who rushed to the hospital with Gu Yancheng.
When she arrived and saw that Lu Jijun was soaked in blood, she asked worriedly, “Dad, what happened to Mom?”
“Qingxin, she jumped off the building!” Lu Jijun cried.
Lu Qingxin’s head began to spin when she heard the terrible news. All of a sudden, her body went limp and she collapsed into Gu Yancheng’s arms.
