Chapter 38: Felix’s Trial
Felix blinked as the world reformed around him. The familiar hum of the lab was gone, replaced by a vast, empty cityscape bathed in twilight. Shadows stretched impossibly long, and the air was thick with silence. He reached for his earpiece out of habit, but there was only static—no Linh, no Kiran, no Arjun. He was truly alone.
"Great," he muttered, forcing a grin. "Just me and my existential dread."
As he stepped forward, the city shifted. Buildings flickered between states—some gleaming and new, others crumbling ruins. Felix realized with a chill that he was walking through his own memories and regrets, the city shaped by his choices and failures.
A figure appeared ahead, standing beneath a flickering streetlamp. Felix's breath caught. It was his sister, Maya, just as he remembered her: bright-eyed, laughing, alive. But as he approached, her form blurred, and her laughter twisted into a cry.
"You left me," she whispered, voice echoing with accusation and sorrow.
Felix staggered back, pain flaring in his chest. "No. I tried—I tried to save you."
The shadows thickened, swirling around Maya's form. More figures emerged—friends lost, teammates he couldn't save, all staring with hollow eyes. The city itself seemed to close in, a maze of guilt and memory.
Felix clenched his fists, fighting the urge to run. "This isn't real. You're not real."
A voice—deeper, older—echoed from the darkness.
"Every thread in the tapestry bears a cost. What have you truly sacrificed, Weaver?"
Felix fell to his knees, the weight of his failures pressing down. But then, through the haze, he remembered Mira's sacrifice—the light she became, the hope she left behind.
He forced himself to his feet, facing the shadows. "I can't change the past. But I can honor it. I can fight for what's left."
The knot's golden thread glimmered at his wrist, pulsing with warmth. Felix reached for it, channeling his memories—not just of loss, but of love, laughter, and resilience. The shadows recoiled, and the city brightened with each memory reclaimed.
Maya's form smiled, her eyes clear. "Remember me, Felix. But don't let me hold you back."
With a final surge of will, Felix stepped through the shadows. The city dissolved, and a doorway of golden light appeared before him.
He took a deep breath and walked through—ready to face whatever trial came next.
