Sea of Unraveling Hours

Chapter 34: The Present Unraveling

Kiran stood in the heart of the city, where the knot's pulse was strongest. The skyline shimmered with afterimages—echoes of what was and what might have been. People hurried past, unaware that reality itself was fraying at the edges.

He felt the anomaly before he saw it: a chill in the air, the way colors seemed to drain from the world. Across the plaza, a rift opened, and from it spilled a figure made of shifting shadows and fractured light.

Kiran steadied his breath, recalling Linh's words: Anchor yourself. Remember who you are. He reached for the knot's energy, channeling his memories—Mira's sacrifice, Arjun's steadfast support, Felix's humor, Linh's wisdom—into a shield around his mind.

The anomaly advanced, tendrils lashing out, seeking to unravel the memories of everyone nearby. Kiran saw people stumble, confusion clouding their faces as their own histories slipped away.

He acted quickly, raising his hand and projecting a wave of knot energy. Golden-blue light surged, pushing the anomaly back. "You don't belong here," Kiran said, his voice steady. "This city remembers. I remember."

The anomaly shrieked, its form flickering. It tried to twist Kiran's memories, showing him visions of loss and despair. But he held firm, focusing on the bonds that tied him to his friends and to Mira.

With a surge of determination, Kiran channeled the knot's power into a single, brilliant thread. He lassoed the anomaly, binding it tight. The shadow fought, but the thread held, drawing it back into the rift.

As the rift sealed, color returned to the world. People blinked, their memories restored, unaware of the danger that had passed.

Kiran exhaled, sweat beading on his brow. He touched his earpiece. "Present anomaly contained. Felix, Arjun—status?"

Felix's voice came through, breathless but upbeat. "Past is clear. Heading to the next point."

Arjun's reply was tense. "Future is unstable. I might need backup."

Linh's voice was a lifeline. "Kiran, Felix—portal to the future opening now. Arjun needs you."

Kiran nodded, determination hardening his features. "On my way."

He stepped into the shimmering portal, the golden thread of Mira's legacy guiding him forward.
