Chapter 1: Reincarnated into Darkness
Yami woke up with a jolt, his eyes snapping open to the sight of a star-filled sky. His mind was a mess, half-still in his previous life, half-reeling from the surreal sensation of… falling? No, it wasn't falling—he was… floating?
"Ugh…" Yami groaned, sitting up quickly as a sharp pain throbbed in his head. His body felt strangely different—lighter, yet somehow stronger, as if he could lift an entire building without breaking a sweat. Looking around, he noticed the unfamiliar surroundings: a vast, ruined landscape stretched out before him, barren except for the occasional jagged rock sticking out of the earth.
"Is this… death?" Yami muttered, trying to wrap his mind around it. He'd just been living a normal life, maybe a bit too normal—he hadn't even had time to make a dent in his bucket list before being… well, murdered by an unfortunate accident involving a falling chandelier.
But now? He didn't feel dead. The only thing that felt truly off was the cold sensation hanging over him, like an eerie presence that whispered death in the back of his mind.
A voice suddenly boomed in his head, deep and ominous, shaking him to his core.
"You are chosen."
"Chosen? For what?!" Yami flinched, but he didn't have time to protest as the voice continued.
"You have inherited my will. The god of death's power now belongs to you."
Yami blinked, trying to process the information. "Wait, what? The god of death?" He glanced around. "I don't even see any gods here. What the hell is going on?"
The voice chuckled—a low, echoing sound that seemed to reverberate from the very ground beneath him.
"Your body is now a vessel for my power. To grow stronger, you must kill. Only through death can you evolve. Your journey will lead you to dungeons, where powerful monsters await. Clear them to increase your strength and unlock more of my will."
Yami stood up, dusting off his clothes, which, surprisingly, were black and fit him perfectly. He noticed a peculiar sensation. It wasn't just physical strength; it was something else. Something… darker. He could almost feel the weight of the god's presence within him, a strange, cold aura that wrapped around his soul.
"Well, that's ominous." Yami stretched, cracking his neck. "But hey, not the weirdest thing that's happened to me. Dungeon clearing and monster killing? I can get behind that…"
His thoughts were interrupted as a massive crack split the ground in front of him. From the crack, a grotesque creature emerged—a monster with a hulking, reptilian body, glowing eyes, and fangs long enough to pierce a tree. It roared, shaking the earth, and lunged toward him with startling speed.
"Okay, that's definitely weird," Yami muttered, but there was a strange glint in his eyes. The god of death had spoken of killing. And monsters… well, monsters could be killed.
Yami raised his hand, feeling the cold power surge through him. A strange black energy began to gather in his palm, forming into a sharp scythe-like shape, its blade glimmering with the deathly essence of the god.
"Heh, so this is what that god meant." Yami smirked. "Let's see how this monster likes death."
With a flash, he swung his newly formed scythe. The weapon cut through the air effortlessly, striking the monster with an explosive force. The creature screamed, its massive form collapsing as if it were nothing more than a ragdoll.
It didn't take long for the monster to disintegrate into a puff of black smoke, leaving behind a glowing orb. Yami blinked, confused. "I've… got an item drop?"
The orb hovered in front of him, pulsating with a dark energy. "What now?"
"Your first kill is complete." The god's voice rang out in his mind. "You have unlocked a portion of my power. You are now a Reaper. The next dungeon awaits."
Yami scratched his head. "Dungeons, huh? Sounds like a bit of a grindfest, but hey, I could use the power-up."
Before he could make another move, the landscape before him shifted. A large stone gate appeared in the distance, and Yami felt an irresistible pull toward it.
"Well, if that's where I need to go, I guess I'll head on over." Yami cracked his knuckles. "But first, I need to figure out how this leveling up thing works. Because I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need all the power I can get to clear these dungeons. The last thing I want is to die again, and I'm not going down without some serious strength."
With that, Yami marched toward the dungeon entrance, ready for whatever monsters lay inside. He wasn't sure if he was ready for this new world, but one thing was for sure—he was going to have a lot of fun killing things.
