Chapter 701: Ran Into
"If you don't believe it, then you go walk through this narrow alley," Wan Yingying sneered.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Han chuckled and then said, "Let's go, what's there to be afraid of?"
After speaking, Xiao Han grabbed Chen Xiaowu and headed straight for the narrow alley.
Wan Yingying watched Xiao Han's retreating figure, her lips curling up into a sinister smile.
As they entered the narrow alley, Xiao Han immediately felt a rush of Yin Qi hitting his face. It felt as though he had suddenly walked into a low-temperature air-conditioned room. However, it was just past three in the afternoon, the sun was blazing, and logically, the temperature should have been high.
"It's so cold!" Chen Xiaowu shivered.
"This palace is an ancient building, so it's cool inside, and the cold air is blowing out," Xiao Han laughed.
"Oh," Chen Xiaowu nodded. She could only follow Xiao Han obediently and keep walking forward.
The alley was very clean, as if someone had swept it. However, the place was deserted, with no staff around; it clearly shouldn't be possible for it to be so clean.
Xiao Han frowned, finding it quite bizarre.
Suddenly, a gust of Yin wind blew.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh...
Suddenly, the Yin Spirits inside the Soul Bead seemed uncontrollable as they burst out, disappearing into the air in a flash. Xiao Han could feel that these spirits were extremely excited.
"What's happening?" Xiao Han muttered to himself.
Chen Xiaowu felt even more uncomfortable. This discomfort increasingly intensified.
"I... I'm so scared!" Chen Xiaowu clutched Xiao Han's arm tightly, saying, "Let's... let's go back!"
"It's too late to go back now," Wan Yingying called out from behind at that moment.
"Why?" Chen Xiaowu asked in shock.
"Once you enter West Gate Narrow Alley, you can't go back," Wan Yingying hastily said. "You can only leave by going forward. If you turn back, you'll see things that are unclean. So, it's best not to look back, lest you see those unclean things and cause trouble!"
Upon hearing this, Chen Xiaowu shuddered even more, clutching Xiao Han's arm tightly, not daring to turn her head to look at what was behind her.
However, Xiao Han became somewhat curious.
He turned to look behind him; behind, a mass of dark clouds loomed, while in front was a world bathed in sunshine. However, behind him was dense Ghost Gate covered in gloomy clouds. It seemed as if he could see those dark shadows slowly moving under those clouds, ready to pounce if he dared to walk back. If he forced himself to walk backwards, he guessed he would be entering the Ghost Gate.
Sss...
Xiao Han took a deep breath, his whole person stunned, speechless.
Xiao Han chuckled and said, "Let's not look back then, let's continue moving forward."
Xiao Han's Yin Spirits rushed into the Ghost Gate, and behind them, a series of agonizing screams and howls of ghosts and wolves ensued.
The piercing screams made Chen Xiaowu's skin crawl, while Wan Yingying, standing next to him, nervously followed Xiao Han forward. The Yin Spirits were fighting fiercely in the Ghost Gate, continuously devouring the lost souls, the wronged souls wandering the West Gate Narrow Alley from past dynasties.
The Yin Spirits, being of the utmost Yin property, needed to devour these lost souls to enhance their strength.
Soon, more than ten Yin Spirits had their fill and quickly transformed into clusters of black Qi, returning into the Soul Bead.
After the Yin Spirits returned, Xiao Han immediately felt their strength increase greatly. Xiao Han was secretly overjoyed; he hadn't expected that the Yin Spirits could devour these lost souls and then enhance their own strength. If he continued to feed them continuously, wouldn't they become a great asset to him?
Thinking this, Xiao Han couldn't help but burst into laughter.
They continued forward and after exiting the narrow alley, they turned the corner and entered Eastern Tube Alley.
Eastern Tube Alley was located on the left side of Ningshou Palace, a very long road, with a tall, large wall on the left hand brushed with red paint, and similarly, another tall, large wall on the right.
Upon arriving here, they immediately felt an even stronger Yin Qi, more intense than the one from the West Gate Narrow Alley.
Arriving here, the Yin Spirits seemed to have no desire to come out, probably because they had had their fill in the West Gate Narrow Alley, so they were no longer much interested in the dense Yin Spirits here. Xiao Han walked along this long alley, looking at the endless corridor, feeling somewhat hairy inside. This sensation was utterly terrifying.
"So terrifying," Chen Xiaowu said fearfully, "I... I think I saw something!"
"What did you see?" Xiao Han asked, puzzled.
"I feel... I just saw a shadow flicker by," Chen Xiaowu hastily said.
"Don't scare yourself in broad daylight," Xiao Han chuckled and said, "There can't be ghosts here."
Xiao Han's words were merely meant to comfort Chen Xiaowu.
However, the Yin Spirits here apparently didn't take it lightly. The blazing sun suddenly turned into dense clouds, and a huge patch of dark clouds covered the sky above them, making the sky look especially ominous.
"How terrifying," Chen Xiaowu said in shock.
"Oh no," Wan Yingying cried out, "Filthy things are about to emerge."
As Wan Yingying had said, it was only 4:30 in the afternoon, and there was only half an hour left until they needed to clear the area. Why clear the area before five o'clock? That was because five o'clock was the peak time, so all tourists had to be cleared from the area by then. Otherwise, once the trapped Yin Spirits appeared, they would definitely scare the tourists here. Therefore, they could only clear the area before five.
However, it was only half-past four now, and unexpectedly, these Yin Spirits had already appeared.
Not far away, a group of palace maids dressed in royal attire advanced slowly toward them in formation.
"Oh my God!" Chen Xiaowu screamed in fright.
Xiao Han quickly covered her mouth and said, "Don't scream, it would be troublesome if you alarm them."
Chen Xiaowu nodded vigorously, her eyes wide, completely devoid of strength, leaning on Xiao Han. She had never seen something so terrifying in her life; she was dumbfounded, shocked, and utterly baffled. Wan Yingying, however, was not scared; although she trembled, she still stood still, shakily watching the four or five palace maids dressed in royal attire slowly approach.
Ten meters... eight meters... five meters...
A few people stood to the left, watching as the palace maids approached them.
"Oh my God!" Chen Xiaowu, highly tense, shivered and quickly closed her eyes.
This exclamation startled the palace maids, who looked up at Xiao Han and the others with displeasure. However, they didn't take any action, paused briefly, and continued to move forward. Their bodies floated lightly, their shoes not touching the ground but floating about a dozen centimeters above it. It was only after they had walked away that Xiao Han and the others let out a sigh of relief.
The group took a deep breath.
"That scared me to death," Wan Yingying said softly, patting her chest, "How terrifying."
"Yes," Xiao Han nodded and said, "It's also my first time seeing this ghostly thing."
"We... we should hurry and go," Chen Xiaowu quickly said.
"Hmm," Xiao Han nodded.
Then, the group quickened their pace.
At that moment, several eunuch-like Yin Spirits quickly brushed past Xiao Han. They soon disappeared at the end of Eastern Tube Alley. Shortly after, they were completely out of sight.
Xiao Han's lips curled into a smile, "Although it's said to be haunted, as long as you don't disturb them, it's all right."
"Hmm," Wan Yingying nodded.
At this point, Chen Xiaowu seemed a bit braver as well. Seeing several groups of ghosts pass by without conflict, she gathered her courage to proceed.
However, this place seemed to be filled with a certain malevolence; the sky, heavy with dark clouds, and within the imperial city, ghastly Yin Spirits with fierce faces were emanating from it, appearing immensely dreadful and terrifying. It sent chills down someone's spine.
Xiao Han had no sense of fear at all; instead, he seemed quite happy when he saw so many Yin Spirits here. For him, the more Yin Spirits, the more souls his Yin Spirit could absorb naturally.
"How scary!" Chen Xiaowu clung tightly to Xiao Han's arm.
"Don't be afraid," Xiao Han whispered soothingly.
"Hmm," Chen Xiaowu nodded, then looked at Xiao Han and said, "Xiao Han, do we... do we really have to go forward?"
The road ahead seemed to have no end in sight, looking very frightening. Not only was Chen Xiaowu scared, but Wan Yingying at his side was also very afraid. She clung shakily to Xiao Han's other arm and said, "Xiao Han, I... I have a feeling something's off here."
"What's off?" Xiao Han asked curiously.
"When I came here before, I could occasionally see one or two, so why can I see so many this time?" Wan Yingying said awkwardly.
"You've been here before?" Xiao Han asked in confusion.
"Yes!" Wan Yingying quickly nodded, "Otherwise, how could I lead the way for you?"
Xiao Han thought about it and felt that what Wan Yingying said made some sense.
"Hehe..." Xiao Han chuckled, "Maybe we're just in luck this time?"
No sooner had Xiao Han spoken.
Thud...
Suddenly a gong sounded.
Then, a eunuch's piercing voice, much like that of a hellish ghost, followed.
"The Emperor makes his way to the Imperial Study Room..."
The three of them were dumbstruck.
All eyes turned to a dense black fog not far away, where two lines of people emerged, led by a man dressed in Qing Dynasty eunuch attire, carrying a horsetail whisk. He looked straight ahead, seemingly ignoring Xiao Han and the others.
