Chapter 48: SS 48: Underworld Assault
At the foot of the Sanctuary.
A group of Specters had arrived.
Their eyes burned with killing intent as they gazed at the glorious Sanctuary.
"The village at the Sanctuary's base?"
"Likely home to the families of Saints from past Holy Wars, right?"
"If these people died, it'd be quite entertaining."
Eacos looked at the village below, his eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
He seemed eager to start a massacre.
"Kill!"
At Eacos' command, the Specters behind him charged forward.
"Who's there?"
Getgard's voice rang out from the Aries Temple.
As the guardian of the first of the Twelve Temples, his vigilance was unmatched.
"The Underworld Army?"
Getgard's face darkened.
He hadn't expected the Underworld to infiltrate so close to the Sanctuary's base.
Undetected.
"A Golden Saint?"
"Let your blood mark the escalation of this Holy War."
Eacos' towering figure loomed.
Taller than Getgard.
And swift.
Before Getgard could react, Eacos' fist slammed into his face.
"Boom!"
Getgard was sent flying, crashing through countless houses.
"Crystal Wall!"
"Everyone, retreat to the Sanctuary's training grounds!"
As a Golden Saint, Getgard wasn't downed by a single blow.
Though the punch was heavy.
Since his loss to Kaiser, Getgard had trained relentlessly, improving his strength.
He blocked Eacos' fist with a Crystal Wall.
A precise application of the technique.
"Oh? Not bad."
Eacos' eyes glinted with a predator toying with prey.
"Cough… cough…"
"You're Eacos, one of the Underworld's three judges?"
Getgard finally saw his attacker clearly.
The distinctive Surplice made his pupils contract.
One of the Underworld's three judges had personally led an assault to the Sanctuary's doorstep.
This wasn't just audacity... it was outright defiance.
"No matter. Athena's Sacred Casket hasn't been activated yet."
"We don't yet feel the weight of death."
"If I can kill one or two Golden Saints, my death would be worth it."
Eacos smirked nonchalantly.
His cosmos flared.
In a flash, he closed the distance to Getgard.
"Damn it!"
Getgard threw a hurried punch.
Fist met fist.
A massive shockwave rippled outward.
Getgard was sent flying again.
This punch made one thing clear.
He was no match for Eacos.
The judge's strength surpassed his.
"Ahh! Ahh!"
Screams echoed nearby.
Ordinary people were like lambs to the slaughter against the Underworld Army.
"Right now, only six Golden Saints remain in the Sanctuary."
"The other six are out on missions."
"Looks like I might not get backup."
Getgard rose from the rubble, feeling the gap in strength.
Yet he showed no sign of retreat.
Golden cosmos clashed with dark purple cosmos.
A storm erupted.
"What's that?"
From the Libra Temple, Kaiser observed the battle at the Sanctuary's base.
"Getgard?"
"The other force… it's at the peak of the seventh sense."
"A Celestial Star Specter?"
"They're bold, attacking the Sanctuary directly."
Kaiser watched the fight below, with no intention of intervening.
Even if support was needed, it wasn't his place.
Taurus Aldebaran was closer.
Though this era's Aldebaran and Getgard weren't the strongest, if Eacos defeated them two-on-one, they deserved to lose.
"Starlight Extinction!"
Getgard waved his hands.
His cosmos spread, stars materializing.
Countless stars began to spin.
Forming a massive vortex of wind.
"Ah!"
Half the Underworld Army was obliterated by the attack.
But it had little effect on Eacos.
"Tch."
"Should've brought more Specters."
Eacos glanced around, his eyes flashing with dissatisfaction.
He hadn't brought enough forces.
They weren't making much impact.
"Garuda Flap!"
Getgard's vision blurred as Eacos appeared before him.
A sensation of weightlessness followed.
Getgard's body was hurled skyward.
At breakneck speed.
"Shh… shh…"
Eacos drew an X on the ground with his foot.
Three seconds later, Getgard's body plummeted.
"Boom!!!"
A massive crash echoed.
Getgard landed at the center of Eacos' X.
Blood sprayed from Getgard's mouth.
The massive impact made him feel as if every bone in his body had shattered.
"Pfft!"
Another gush of blood.
Without the protection of his Golden Cloth, that blow could have killed him.
"This is a Golden Saint?"
"You're far too weak."
Eacos looked at Getgard with disdain.
He raised his right hand, purple flames igniting.
The searing heat warped the space around it.
"Great Horn!"
Before the flames could descend, Eacos was struck by a colossal golden bull's head, sending him flying.
Far from Getgard.
"Cough… cough…"
Getgard's eyes were still dazed but he snapped back to reality.
"You okay?"
Aldebaran looked at Getgard, concern in his eyes.
Cracks marred Getgard's Golden Cloth.
Aldebaran hadn't expected Getgard to fall so quickly.
He had only been evacuating civilians.
Yet Getgard was already defeated.
Had he arrived a moment later, Getgard might have died by Eacos' hand.
"Be careful, Eacos is strong."
"He feels no weaker than Kaiser was back then."
Getgard took a deep breath, finally steadying himself.
Wiping blood from his lips, he looked toward where Eacos had been flung.
"Whoosh…"
A gust of wind spread.
Eacos emerged unscathed at their side.
"That actually hurt."
Eacos flexed his wrist.
The impact had caught him off guard.
"He's fine?"
Aldebaran's expression grew grave.
They always knew there were gaps between Golden Saints.
Sometimes larger than the gap between Silver and Gold.
Kaiser and Getgard were both Golden Saints.
Yet Getgard lasted less than a minute against Kaiser.
That was the difference.
"Let's go!"
Aldebaran wasn't one to back down.
He exchanged a glance with Getgard.
Both charged forward.
The area had been evacuated.
Time for a full-on battle!
"Bring it!"
Eacos roared with excitement.
The three clashed in an instant.
