Chapter 8: Struggles
The weight of Glynda's reprimand still lingered over Team RWBY as they sat in their classroom, Ruby slumped over her desk, chin resting on her folded arms. The scolding had been particularly harsh this time, and Weiss had not let it go, continuously glaring at Ruby with her arms crossed in frustration.
"Honestly, Ruby! This is what happens when you spend all night rereading that book! Haven't you practically memorized it by now?" Weiss scolded, her voice sharp with irritation.
Ruby sighed and turned to face Blake, who, unlike Weiss, seemed to understand her fascination. "Let me guess," Blake said, her amber eyes narrowing knowingly, "you were rereading the part about Emil Blonsky, weren't you?"
Ruby nodded vigorously. "I mean, after learning he's my ancestor, how could I not? I just wanted to go through it again, to see if I missed anything."
Before anyone could respond, Ruby suddenly stood up on her chair, raising her fist in the air dramatically. "I want to be as strong as Emil Blonsky!" she declared boldly, her silver eyes shimmering with determination.
A tense silence followed. Then, Yang groaned and dragged a hand down her face. "Oh, for the love of—Ruby, sit down! Everyone's cringing at you right now."
Ruby blinked and looked around. The entire classroom had gone quiet, students whispering among themselves while some outright snickered at her outburst. Her cheeks turned beet red as she hurriedly sat back down, sinking into her seat in embarrassment.
"I hate you, Yang," she muttered under her breath, her voice muffled against the desk.
Yang just chuckled and ruffled Ruby's hair. "Love ya too, sis."
Before the conversation could continue, a loud groan from behind them caught their attention. They turned to see Jaune slumped over his desk, his head barely held up by his arms, dark circles under his eyes. The poor guy looked absolutely drained.
"Jaune? Are you okay?" Ruby asked, concerned.
Jaune lazily lifted his head, offering a weak smile. "Yeah, just... studying. A lot."
Pyrrha, who sat beside him, placed a hand on his shoulder. "He's been working harder than anyone, even more than me," she said softly. "Ever since he joined Beacon, he's been pushing himself non-stop."
Ren sighed and nodded in agreement. "We've told him to rest, but he won't listen."
Jaune waved them off. "I'm fine, really. Just need to—"
"Mr. Arc!" A voice boomed across the room, making everyone straighten up in their seats.
Dr. Oobleck, their history professor, had appeared out of nowhere with his usual blinding speed, his sharp eyes locked onto Jaune. "If you intend to sleep during my lectures, then perhaps you should reconsider your priorities! This is a classroom, not a hotel!"
Jaune sat up straight, frantically rubbing his face to stay awake. "S-Sorry, Professor! Won't happen again!"
Oobleck gave him a scrutinizing look before zooming back to the front of the class. "See that it doesn't! Now, back to the lesson!"
The rest of the class proceeded without much incident, though Jaune continued to struggle with keeping his eyes open. When the lesson finally ended, Team RWBY and Team JNPR made their way to the cafeteria for lunch.
Jaune, still exhausted, collapsed onto the cafeteria table with a dramatic groan. "I'm dying..."
"No, you're just sleep-deprived," Ren corrected, handing Jaune a cup of tea.
"Same thing," Jaune mumbled, taking a sip.
While they ate, the mood lightened when Bruce unexpectedly appeared. "Oh! It's you guys again," he greeted, a small grin on his face.
"Bruce!" Ruby's face lit up with excitement, her silver eyes sparkling like stars. "You came to visit!"
Bruce chuckled and pulled out a small bag, handing each of them a piece of candy. "Just stopping by. Have a meeting with Ozpin soon."
Ruby pouted. "Aww, I wanted to ask you more about The Hulk's story."
Bruce ruffled her hair. "Maybe later, kid. Be patient."
Nora, who had been quietly observing, suddenly nudged Ren. "Okay, but for real—how is he that old and still built like a tank?"
Ren just shrugged. "Aura?"
Before they could continue their conversation, a cruel laugh rang from a few tables over. They turned to see Cardin Winchester and his team surrounding Velvet Scarlatina, the rabbit Faunus from Team CFVY. Cardin sneered as he yanked at Velvet's ears, pulling them cruelly.
"You think you're better than us, bunny?" Cardin taunted, his teammates laughing along with him.
Ruby clenched her fists. "That jerk..."
Before she could step in, Pyrrha was already moving. With a swift motion, she grabbed Cardin's wrist and squeezed—hard. The sound of metal bending echoed through the cafeteria as Cardin's wrist armor dented under her grip.
He yelped in pain, yanking his arm away. "What the hell?!"
Team RWBY and other JNPR cheers on Pyrrha for doing the right thing.
Velvet's teammates arrived just in time. Coco, the leader of Team CFVY, smirked and casually threw a spoonful of mashed potatoes onto Cardin's chest. "Oops. Butterfingers."
The cafeteria erupted into laughter as Cardin's face turned red with anger. He stood up abruptly, fists clenched. "You wanna go?!"
Yatsuhashi, the tallest member of CFVY, stepped forward. "Do you?"
Cardin's team hesitated, looking between their leader and the towering Yatsuhashi. The tension in the air was thick, a fight moments away from breaking out.
"Enough!" Glynda Goodwitch's voice sliced through the chaos, making everyone freeze. "Everyone involved—out. Now."
Team RWBY, Team JNPR, and Team CFVY all exchanged looks before quietly grabbing their food and leaving the cafeteria.
Outside, Coco turned to Pyrrha with a smirk. "Not bad, Nikos. Didn't know you had it in you."
"I just did what was right," Pyrrha responded with a small smile.
Velvet gave her a grateful nod. "Thank you."
Meanwhile, Cardin stood near the cafeteria doors, gripping his dented wrist armor. His eyes burned with hatred as he watched Pyrrha walk away. His pride had been wounded, and he was not the type to let things go.
"You'll pay for that," he muttered under his breath, already planning his revenge.
