RWBY: Oscar the gamer

Chapter 9: Oscar meets Qrow

Oscar was in his house reading a book on remnant history, more particularly about the great war.

Oscar then spoke metally. "Shut up".

Oscar sighed as the notifications continued to pop up one after another. He was trying to focus on his book about the Great War, but the constant dinging from his system was making it difficult to concentrate. Each ding signified another boost to his intelligence, but he wasn't in the mood to hear it right now.

"Seriously, I get it," Oscar muttered to himself, rubbing his temples. The system had its perks, but it was getting annoying sometimes. He had already earned several points, and as much as the system's upgrades were useful, it felt like the notifications never stopped when he was just trying to relax.

Oscar glanced at his status screen, his intelligence stat now noticeably higher.

[ Host's current intelligence: 24 more ]

He shrugged, deciding it was best to ignore the dings for now. It was good to be getting smarter, especially with the dungeon keys, monster fights, and whatever else the world would throw at him. But that didn't mean he had to like the constant interruptions.

He turned his attention back to the book, immersing himself in the history of Remnant. The Great War was a fascinating subject—full of untold stories and mysteries. Oscar was learning a lot, especially about the power struggles between the kingdoms and the ancient forces that shaped the world. Every piece of knowledge could help him in his journey, whether he was fighting monsters or navigating this strange new life he was living.

After a few more minutes of reading in peace, Oscar felt a sense of calm return. The system was quiet for now, and he could finally lose himself in the history of Remnant. He smiled to himself, thinking, Sometimes, peace and quiet are the best upgrades I could ask for.

After a while Oscar close the book and put down, he was going to the workshop to work on something then he was stopped.

Emimel looked at Oscar. "Where are you going".

Oscar stopped and looked at her. "Um why are you asking".

Emimel looked at him and spoke. "There is curfew going recently, a Huntsman is currently investigating a shadow"

Oscar then screamed in his mind. "Oh great, people noticed me in the night or well my shadow".

Oscar looked at his aunt. "So what is he doing".

Emimel looked at Oscar. "Just he is going house to house asking questions".

Oscar looked at her as he spoke. "So um do you think he wi-"

Then he heard the door bell, as he released it was probably the huntsman, as he went to the door to answer it as he opned there standing was Qrow.

Oscar looked at the man as he looked at him hoping this was not the Hunter. "Um can I help you".

Qrow looked at Oscar his red eyes meeting Oscar green. "Just a few questions from your... Will who is the adult in this house".

Oscar froze for a moment, his heart racing as he faced the Huntsman. He had heard of Qrow Branwen before, a seasoned Huntsman known for his skills in combat and his mysterious aura. The last thing he wanted was to be caught up in an investigation, especially when he was still trying to hide his newfound powers and strange activities.

Oscar cleared his throat, trying to remain calm despite the situation. "That would be my Aunt Emimel. She's inside."

Qrow raised an eyebrow, his sharp gaze never leaving Oscar. "Good. I need to ask a few questions about any unusual occurrences around here, especially at night. There have been reports of a strange shadow moving through the area, and it's been linked to some of the recent fires."

Oscar's mind was racing. Great, just what I needed. He silently cursed his own recklessness with the fireball from the wendigo battle, though he knew it wasn't entirely his fault. But now, he had to be careful. His shadow wasn't the only thing that could cause suspicion. The fact that Qrow was here meant he was likely piecing things together.

Emimel stepped into the doorway, looking at Qrow with a polite smile. "Good evening, Mr. Branwen. How can I help you?"

Qrow turned his attention to her, his eyes softening slightly, though the seriousness of the investigation was still evident. "Evening, ma'am. Just a few questions about your nephew here, Oscar. We've received reports of a strange shadow moving around this area, and I need to ask if he's seen anything unusual. The fires, the forest, and everything else... It all seems connected."

Oscar tried to keep his composure, but the tension in the air was palpable. He wasn't sure how much Qrow knew or how much he could reveal without drawing attention to himself. If he mentioned the system, or anything about his powers, he'd be in serious trouble.

"No, nothing out of the ordinary," Oscar replied quickly, though he could feel the sweat on his palms. "Just... just the usual things."

Qrow studied Oscar for a moment, his sharp red eyes searching for any signs of deception. Oscar was doing his best to hide the truth, but he could feel the weight of Qrow's scrutiny. He had to stay calm.

Qrow seemed to nod slightly, then shifted his focus to Emimel. "I appreciate your cooperation. If you or Oscar see anything else unusual, don't hesitate to contact me. We're trying to keep things under control around here."

With that, Qrow turned to leave, but not without casting one final glance at Oscar. "Remember, Oscar," he said in a voice low enough for only him to hear, "there's no need to hide anything. If you ever need help, don't be afraid to reach out."

Oscar stood there, stunned. Qrow's words were oddly comforting, but at the same time, they felt like a warning. He wasn't sure if the Huntsman had seen through his facade or if he was simply trying to gather information in his own way.

As the door closed behind Qrow, Oscar let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. "That was... close," he muttered to himself.

Emimel looked at him with concern. "Oscar, what's going on? Why was he so interested in you?"

Oscar just shrugged, trying to act nonchalant. "I don't know. He's probably just doing his job."

But deep down, Oscar knew Qrow wasn't just doing his job. The Huntsman was getting closer, and soon, Oscar wouldn't be able to hide in the shadows anymore. He needed to be careful... and fast.

As Emimel walked back to the kitchen, giving Oscar a concerned glance, he closed the door and leaned against it. His mind raced with a flurry of thoughts. Qrow wasn't the kind of person to leave loose ends, and Oscar had a sinking feeling he might be one of those ends.

He checked his system, hoping for some insight or guidance.

[System Notification

Warning: Increased scrutiny from external entities.

Suggestion: Minimize nighttime activities and improve stealth capabilities.

New Quest: "Evade the Huntsman"

Objective: Avoid detection by Qrow Branwen for 10 days.

Reward: +5 Agility, Stealth Skill Upgrade ]

Oscar groaned internally. Of course, the system turns this into a game. Ten days? That guy's like a bloodhound!

He pushed off the door and made his way to his room, pretending to look casual for Emimel's sake. Once inside, he locked the door and sat on his bed, pulling out his notebook where he'd been jotting down notes about his abilities and plans.

"I need to rethink my strategy," he muttered. "Qrow's clearly suspicious, and if I keep acting like this, he'll figure something out."

He flipped through his notes, scanning over the various skills he'd unlocked and the strategies he'd been working on. The Poseidon skill intrigued him, but he hadn't had much time to test its full potential. He also hadn't fully explored the Cleric subclass, which could prove useful in healing or defensive situations.

Oscar paused, then opened his system menu again, scrolling through his abilities.

[Skills

Fireball (Level 5)

Wind Slash (Level 4)

Healing Hands (Level 2)

Poseidon's Resistance (Passive)

Poison Resistance (Passive)

Stealth (Level 3)]

Stealth was clearly going to be his best bet. He needed to avoid any situations that would make Qrow suspect him further.

He sighed, standing up and pacing his room. "Okay, first things first. No more sneaking out at night, at least for now. Second, I need to find a way to misdirect him. If he's looking for a shadow, maybe I can give him one that doesn't lead back to me."

Oscar smirked at the idea. He pulled out some scrap materials from his desk drawer—leftovers from his experiments—and began sketching a rough design for a decoy device. If he could create a remote-controlled shadow projector or something similar, he might be able to lead Qrow away from the truth.

Meanwhile, Qrow walked away from Oscar's house, his thoughts swirling. Something about the kid felt... off. He couldn't put his finger on it, but the way Oscar had responded to his questions didn't sit right with him.

Taking a long swig from his flask, Qrow muttered to himself, "You've been at this too long, Qrow. Maybe the kid's just a normal teenager... but maybe not."

He glanced at the file in his hand, flipping through the reports again. The shadow had been spotted near the site of the forest fire, and while most people dismissed it as coincidence or a trick of the light, Qrow wasn't so sure. He'd seen enough strange things in his life to know when something didn't add up.

"If that shadow really is a person, then they're hiding something big," he said under his breath. "And I'm going to find out what."

He continued down the street, his sharp eyes scanning the shadows around him. Ten days. That's all the time he had left to solve this mystery before Ozpin started breathing down his neck about Beacon Academy again.

Back in his room, Oscar finished assembling the prototype for his decoy device. It wasn't much—a simple contraption made from old parts and some creative improvisation—but it would do the trick for now.

"Let's see if this works," he whispered, activating the device. A faint shadow flickered across his wall, mimicking the movements of a human figure. It wasn't perfect, but it was convincing enough to fool someone at a distance.

Oscar grinned. "Now I just need to find the right time and place to use it. If Qrow wants a shadow, I'll give him one."

He tucked the device into his bag, feeling a small sense of relief. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was a start. For now, all he could do was stay out of sight, hone his skills, and hope that the Huntsman's attention would shift elsewhere.

But deep down, Oscar knew that this was only the beginning. If Qrow was already this close, it was only a matter of time before the real challenge began. And when it did, he'd need to be ready.

Later that night, Oscar was hiding in a tree, as he saw Qrow, Agility skill will make him fast enough to escape as Qrow was looking around be pressed the Button, he needs this new boost, and will this was the best he got, the contest bonus he got from his system in intelligence made a genius in the low

As Oscar crouched in the tree, his heart pounded in his chest. The shadows concealed him well, but he knew Qrow's sharp eyes wouldn't miss a movement if he wasn't careful. The Huntsman stood below, scanning the area with a calculated gaze. His every move screamed experience—Oscar couldn't afford a single mistake.

Oscar took a deep breath and pressed the button on his device. The decoy activated, projecting a shadowy figure that flickered briefly before moving away from the tree.

Qrow's head snapped toward the shadow. "There you are," he muttered, his voice low but sharp. He started following the illusion, his movements quick and precise.

Oscar grinned, though he didn't let his guard down. "Worked like a charm," he whispered to himself, carefully climbing down from the tree to slip away in the opposite direction. His agility skill activated, making his movements swift and silent.

As he moved, his mind wandered briefly to his system stats. With his intelligence stat at 96, he mused about its real-world implications. He'd read somewhere that IQ wasn't a perfect correlation to raw intelligence, but a stat that high likely put him at genius level—at least in certain areas.

"Probably around 140 to 150," he muttered under his breath. "High enough to outthink most people, but not enough to keep up with someone like Qrow indefinitely. I need to play this smart."

He focused on the task at hand, weaving through the forest and avoiding any potential noise that might give away his position.

Qrow, meanwhile, stopped as the shadow faded into nothingness. His brow furrowed as he scanned the area, his instincts screaming at him that something was off.

"Smart kid," he muttered. "But not smart enough."

He took another swig from his flask, pretending to let his guard down as he subtly scanned the treetops and nearby brush. He'd been hunting people—and Grimm—long enough to know when someone was trying to pull the wool over his eyes.

The faintest rustle reached his ears. Qrow's red eyes darted toward the source, a small smirk playing on his lips.

"Gotcha," he said, his hand moving to his weapon.

Oscar felt a chill run down his spine as he sensed Qrow's attention shift. He didn't know how, but he could tell the Huntsman was onto him.

"Damn it," he hissed, activating his agility skill again to increase his speed. He darted through the trees, pushing his body to its limit as he tried to create as much distance as possible.

Behind him, Qrow gave chase, his movements fluid and relentless. He wasn't going at full speed yet—he didn't need to.

"You can run, but you can't hide forever," Qrow called out, his voice carrying easily through the night.

Oscar gritted his teeth, his mind racing for a solution. He couldn't keep this up much longer. Even with his agility boost, Qrow's experience and stamina gave him the upper hand.

Then an idea struck him. It was risky, but it might be his only chance.

He reached into his bag and pulled out a second decoy device he'd been working on—a crude, experimental version that created multiple shadows at once. It wasn't as reliable as the first, but it might buy him the time he needed.

He activated the device and threw it behind him, the shadows scattering in all directions.

Qrow paused, his eyes narrowing as he watched the figures dart around. "Clever kid," he muttered, slowing his pace as he analyzed the situation.

Oscar didn't wait to see if it worked. He used the distraction to veer off course, heading toward the densest part of the forest. He needed to get back to his house before Qrow pieced everything together.

Back at the house, Oscar slipped through the window of his room, collapsing onto his bed with a heavy sigh. His body ached, and his mind felt like it was running on fumes.

"Too close," he muttered, opening his system menu to check his stats.

[System Update

Agility: +1

Intelligence: +1

New Skill Unlocked: Decoy Mastery (Level 1)]

Oscar chuckled weakly. "Decoy mastery, huh? Guess that's fitting."

As he closed his eyes, exhaustion taking over, he couldn't shake the feeling that this was far from over. Qrow wasn't the type to give up easily, and if Oscar wanted to stay one step ahead, he'd need to be smarter, faster, and more prepared than ever.
