RWBY: I Need to Cheat on My Girlfriend

Chapter 36: Ruby's day

[Xia Long Family Cabin]

In the room, Yang is lying on her bed, flipping through a magazine, when suddenly, *BAM!*, the door swings open.

"Ah!" Yang screams, quickly hiding the magazine, thinking it might be her mother, Summer. However, to her surprise, it's not Summer, but her sister Ruby.

"And! Done!" Ruby exclaims as she comes in, carrying what looks like a replica of Daniel's rapier in her hands.

"I would've finished sooner, but I had to do it from memory," Ruby adds proudly, holding the rapier up high.

Yang sighs exasperatedly, letting her head fall back onto the bed. Ruby managed to finish the rapier in just four days since Yang gave her the idea of making a replica.

Yang peeks out from her bed. "Very cute and all," she says, clearly annoyed by the interruption, "but why are you showing it to me?"

Ruby scratches her cheek, visibly nervous. "Well... I thought it'd be a good idea to give it to him in person and apologize for taking so long," she says timidly.

"That's a very good idea. I wish you the best of luck," Yang responds dryly as she stands up, clearly trying to usher Ruby out of the room. Yang needs some privacy to finish what she was doing.

Ruby panics as she's pushed out. "But I don't know where he lives!" she manages to shout before Yang shuts the door.

"I'll give you the address," Yang replies without missing a beat as she tries to close the door.

"And I need moral support for this! Please, Yang!" Ruby pleads from outside, clearly too insecure to face Daniel alone.

Yang sighs internally, pausing for a moment. "Fine..." she finally says, though she's not too eager to see Daniel again. It's curious, as both Yang and Ruby have stopped receiving messages from him lately.

"Just give me a moment," Yang adds while searching for her shoes.

"Yay!" Ruby shouts excitedly, running downstairs to get ready.

Yang grabs her shoes, a jacket, and her motorcycle keys. All set, she heads downstairs, but before leaving, she decides to check something and goes to the living room.

"How are you?" Yang asks, addressing her uncle Qrow, who currently has a leg and arm in casts, along with a neck brace, lounging on the couch and looking utterly defeated.

"I'd be better if you handed me my flask," Qrow replies dryly.

Yang suppresses a laugh. "No liquor for a few days, doctor's orders," she says, reminding him that she personally hid all the alcohol in the house.

Qrow sighs, shifting uncomfortably on the couch.

"You know there's a spare room upstairs, right?" Yang comments, noting her uncle's refusal to use the guest room.

"I prefer the couch," Qrow replies, not bothering to elaborate.

Yang shakes her head and starts to turn to leave. However, as she heads to the door, she can't help but remember how Qrow ended up in this situation.

[Flashback]

Yang and Ruby are in the living room, both restless as time passes. Ruby paces nervously until she stops when she hears the sound of a vehicle approaching the cabin. Ruby tries to run to the window to look, but Yang grabs her arm to stop her.

"Ruby, try to be more sensitive to the situation!" Yang scolds her firmly.

"But, Yang! What if he can't climb the stairs?" Ruby insists, concerned.

Yang rolls her eyes. "Ruby, I don't think he's so bad off that—" Her sentence is cut off as the front door swings open.

Both girls stare in astonishment as their mother, Summer, enters, helping their uncle Qrow, who has a leg and an arm in casts, along with a neck brace.

"I take it back..." Yang mutters, just before receiving an elbow from Ruby.

"Uncle Qrow, you're alive!" Ruby runs to him and hugs him tightly.

"Ah!" Qrow groans, gritting his teeth as the pain in his ribs makes him wince.

Ruby quickly steps back. "Sorry! I'm so sorry..." she apologizes, stepping back with a guilty expression.

"It's fine, not your fault," Qrow says, trying to smile as he sinks heavily into the couch.

The silence in the room grows awkward.

"So… aren't you going to tell us how this happened?" Yang asks, breaking the ice out of curiosity.

"Yang!" Summer shoots her a sharp look, clearly indicating it's not the right time for questions.

"But Mom, I want to know too!" Ruby joins in, shrinking under Summer's identical glare.

"Sorry..." Ruby murmurs, looking away.

Qrow shakes his head and lets out a light chuckle. "It's fine," he says calmly. "I'll tell you."

Yang and Ruby look at him expectantly as Qrow begins to recount. "It was during a mission. Grimm everywhere, endless hordes…" Ruby claps a bit, excited by the story.

"I was out of bullets, surrounded, and had to save some kids…" Qrow continues heroically, but Summer sighs and looks at him with exasperation.

"He got crushed by a guy jumping off Beacon Tower," Summer blurts out bluntly.

Qrow falls silent for a moment, then shakes his head resignedly, looking at her, clearly disappointed.

The awkward silence lingers for a few seconds until Yang breaks it with an explosive laugh. "HAHAHA! You got crushed by a person!" she exclaims, pointing at Qrow while doubling over in laughter.

Ruby tries to hold back, but it's hard. "U-Uncle... I guess he really made an impact! HAHAHA!" She finally gives in, laughing as she holds her stomach. Yang, hearing Ruby, collapses to the floor, unable to control her laughter.

Qrow sighs tiredly, leaning back on the couch. "Just so you know, the only reason it hurt me was because my aura wasn't active," he says, trying to defend himself.

His words don't help at all; in fact, they make Yang and Ruby laugh even harder.

Finally, Yang calms down enough to ask: "And what happened to the person who crushed you?"

Qrow growls, his expression hardening at the memory. "As far as I know, the bastard survived and is recovering at Vale's hospital. That lucky jerk..."

Ruby, still with a slight smile, straightens up and gives him a curious look. "And how long will you be like this?" she asks, pointing to his casts.

"Ten days at most," Qrow replies with a somewhat resigned tone. Thanks to his aura, his wounds heal quickly, but not having it active at the time forced him into this annoying recovery.

Qrow lets himself fall back on the couch, closing his eyes in frustration. "What a bother..." he thinks, sighing as he settles in, knowing they won't let him forget this.

[End of Flashback]

"Anyway... See you, uncle Qrow. I'm taking Ruby to see her forgotten boyfriend," Yang says mockingly as she leaves the room.

Qrow lazily waves his one free hand without opening his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, have him drop by someday. I'd like to meet him," he mumbles, settling even deeper into the couch.

Yang exits the cabin and finds Ruby waiting for her next to the motorcycle, holding the foil-wrapped rapier as if it were a gift. "What are you waiting for?! Let's go!" Ruby exclaims, giving a little excited hop.

Yang sighs in resignation. "Ah… This is going to be a long day."

Both of them hop onto the motorcycle, and Yang drives them to the town of Patch, where they catch a Bullhead to Vale, including transporting the motorcycle. Once in the city, Yang resumes driving and takes them to an apartment building she remembers as Daniel's residence. She parks in front of the building and removes her helmet.

"Is this it?!" Ruby asks, visibly excited.

"Yeah, fourth floor," Yang confirms, turning off the engine and securing the bike.

Unable to contain her excitement, Ruby waits for Yang because she knows she can't face him alone. Together, they enter the building, which has no receptionist, and head straight for the elevator. On reaching the fourth floor, they walk to the door that, according to Yang, belongs to Daniel's apartment.

Ruby glances nervously at Yang, seeking confirmation. Yang rolls her eyes and nods, making it clear it's the right door.

Ruby takes a deep breath and knocks on the door a few times. "Knock, knock." She waits a few seconds, but there's no answer.

A minute. Two minutes.

Ruby tries again, this time louder. "Knock, knock, knock!"

Moments pass without a response, and Ruby starts to get anxious. "Do you think he's not home?" she asks, biting her lip.

Yang didn't come all this way for nothing. Without answering, she pulls a bobby pin out of her hair and shows it with a mischievous smile. "There's only one way to find out," she says as she begins to pick the lock.

"Yang! What are you doing? You can't do this!" Ruby exclaims nervously.

Yang ignores her, continuing to fiddle with the lock. "I've been here before, Ruby... This isn't breaking in." She pauses for a moment, thinking of an excuse. "It's like organizing a surprise party. We even have a gift," Yang says, pointing at the wrapped rapier.

With a bit more brute force, Yang manages to open the door. "Voilà!" she exclaims with satisfaction.

Despite her complaints, Ruby is the first to step inside. "Yang? Are you sure this is his apartment?" she asks from inside.

Yang frowns. "Of course, I'm sure... let's see..." As she enters, her confidence falters upon noticing the apartment is completely empty.

"No, no, no... I'm 100% sure this is the right place," Yang says as she inspects the walls, the view from the window, and other familiar details.

"Hey!" A voice from outside interrupts her thoughts. They both step out to the balcony and see a faunus woman with rabbit ears standing in the building across from them, watching them curiously.

"What are you doing there?" the woman asks, raising her voice.

Ruby stammers, trying to respond but unable to lie. "Are you the new tenants?" the woman adds, raising an eyebrow.

Yang takes control of the situation, stepping forward. "Yes, that's right. We're interested in this apartment," she responds naturally.

The woman seems to relax. "I'm glad! It would have been a problem if another bitch moved in."

Ruby frowns at the comment, but Yang stops her with a slight gesture. "Relax, Ruby. Maybe she's talking about someone else," Yang whispers.

The woman keeps talking, apparently unfiltered. "I think his name was Daniel."

Ruby steps forward, ready to draw her weapon, but Yang stops her again. "Enough! She might know something useful," she says quietly.

Yang clears her throat and raises her voice. "Do you happen to know what happened to the previous tenant?" she asks kindly, trying to get more information.

The woman thinks for a moment. "He said something about leaving this dump. That he was going to Atlas to get rich," she replies, lighting a cigarette. "Though, of course, he said it with more swearing."

Ruby leans closer to Yang, whispering suspiciously. "Yang, I think this woman is crazy. That doesn't sound like Daniel. We should leave."

Yang nods, giving the woman a forced smile. "Thanks for the information!" she shouts as they both back away out of sight.

They leave the building. "Now what?" Ruby asks nervously.

Yang stops, adopting an exaggerated thinking pose. "Oh, I know! How about... you call him?" she says, crossing her arms with a sarcastic smile. "Calling him from the start would have saved us a trip, a break-in, and a few other problems."

Ruby pulls out her scroll, somewhat embarrassed, and dials Daniel's number. The ringtone sounds once, twice, before a familiar voice answers. "Ruby?"

"Daniel! Where are you?" Ruby quickly asks without bothering to greet him.

There's a moment of silence before Daniel responds. "On a Bullhead heading to Atlas."

"WHAT?! ATLAS?! Why?" Ruby nearly shouts in surprise.

"It's a work thing..." Daniel replies, but Ruby interrupts him.

"Why didn't you tell me?!" she exclaims, clearly upset.

On the other end of the scroll, Daniel raises his voice, even more irritated. "Don't yell at me, Ruby Rose! I tried contacting you for two weeks. You ignored my messages and calls!"

Ruby opens her mouth to defend herself, but Daniel doesn't give her the chance. "Not a single call, not a single message! Not even your sister answered!"

There's an awkward silence. Ruby lowers her gaze, feeling guilty. "I'm sorry..." she says, almost in a whisper, her tone regretful.

"Does this mean we're breaking up?" Ruby asks, her voice trembling as she braces for the worst.

"NO!" Daniel's response is quick and emphatic, almost a shout. "No, no, of course not."

Ruby remains silent, surprised. For a moment, she hesitates. "Are you coming back?" she finally asks, nervousness evident in her voice.

"Yes. It'll only be a few weeks. I promise I'll be back," Daniel assures, his tone calmer.

Ruby exhales in relief. "Will you be okay traveling alone?" she asks, worried about how hard it can be to travel without company.

"I'm fine, and I'm not alone," Daniel replies more calmly.

"What do you mean?" Ruby frowns, confused.

"Oh, I met a very nice girl who's traveling with me," Daniel says casually.

Ruby feels a sudden chill run through her body. "A girl?" she asks nervously.

"Yeah, she's amazing. She's also training to be a Huntress. She said she'd show me around Atlas and more. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but I can't wait."

Daniel's words leave Ruby speechless. She tries to say something, but a sound in the background of the call distracts her—a giggle.

"Ha, ha... No, stop!" Daniel's voice is heard, laughing.

Ruby feels a knot in her stomach and, though she fears the answer, can't help but ask, "What's that sound?"

"Oh, it's my friend. She likes to tickle me. She's very friendly." Ruby feels her world crumble.

"Well, Ruby, I have to go. We're in the air, and they're asking me to turn off the scroll."

Ruby tries to respond, but the words won't come out.

"See you! Text me," Daniel says before the call ends with a sharp beep.

Yang, who had been silently watching her sister, notices the change in her expression. Ruby slowly lowers the scroll, letting it fall to the ground without saying anything.

"Ruby?"
