Chapter 11: The Guild's Newcomers
After settling into their room, they decided to explore the town further. Their next stop was the Adventurers' Guild, a bustling hall filled with the sounds of boisterous laughter and excited chatter.
Approaching the guildmaster, a gruff-looking man with a weathered face and a long, flowing beard, Asmodeus introduced themselves. "We are new to this town," he said, "and we wish to register as adventurers."
The guildmaster, intrigued by the confident young man, raised an eyebrow. "Adventurers, you say? And what makes you think you're worthy of the title?"
Asmodeus, with a mischievous glint in his eyes, replied,
"We have a few tricks up our sleeves, old man. Don't you think?"
The guildmaster chuckled. "Very well," he said. "Let's see what you've got." He then proceeded to administer a series of tests, assessing their strength, agility, and combat skills.
Asmodeus, with his mastery of the elements, easily passed the tests. Lucifer, with his deadly accuracy and swift movements, impressed the guildmaster with his archery skills. Even Alpha, despite her reserved demeanor, displayed impressive combat prowess, her movements fluid and precise.
Satisfied with their performance, the guildmaster welcomed them into the ranks of the Adventurers' Guild. "Welcome, adventurers," he declared.
"May your journeys be filled with glory and riches."
With their registration complete, Asmodeus, Lucifer, and Alpha were now officially recognized adventurers.
Asmodeus, his eyes scanning the list of quests, couldn't help but smirk. He knew, from Lucifer's earlier report, that the Adventurers' Guild was more than just a place to find work. It was a social hierarchy, a political landscape where reputation and connections were as important as strength and skill.
He remembered Lucifer's words:
"Even in this world, politics play a significant role within the Guild. Climbing the ranks will require more than just completing quests. You'll need to prove your worth, make connections, and gain the respect of your peers."
Asmodeus understood. Simply completing quests, even dangerous ones, wouldn't guarantee rapid advancement. The Guild was filled with ambitious individuals, all vying for recognition and prestige. He knew that climbing the ladder would require cunning, manipulation, and the cultivation of influence.
He also knew that the E-rank was merely the starting point, the bottom rung of a long and arduous climb. Above them were D-rank, C-rank, B-rank, A-rank, S-rank, and finally, the coveted SSS-rank, reserved for only the most powerful and influential adventurers.
But Asmodeus was not deterred. He was a Demon Lord, accustomed to power and dominance. He would not be content to remain at the bottom of the ladder. He would rise to the top, no matter the cost.
"E-rank, huh?" he muttered, a glint of ambition in his eyes. "A mere stepping stone."
He then turned his attention to the quest board. A variety of quests were listed, ranging from simple errands to dangerous hunts. He spotted one that piqued his interest: "Retrieve a Moonbloom Flower from the Whispering Woods."
"This one seems simple enough," Asmodeus declared. "A good starting point."
Lucifer examined the quest board with a critical eye.
"The reward for this quest is minimal, barely enough to cover our expenses. However, it should provide us with a basic understanding of the local flora and fauna."
Alpha checked their supplies.
"We are adequately prepared for a short excursion into the woods. We have sufficient rations and water, as well as the necessary tools for navigation and self-defense."
With their preparations complete, the trio ventured into the Whispering Woods, their eyes peeled for the elusive Moonbloom Flower. Asmodeus, his senses heightened, led the way, his eyes scanning the undergrowth for any signs of danger.
Lucifer, with his bow drawn, remained vigilant, his eyes constantly searching for any movement in the shadows. Alpha, her senses attuned to the slightest disturbance, moved silently through the undergrowth, her presence a shadow in the deepening gloom.
Deep within the woods, they encountered their first obstacle: a thorny thicket that blocked their path. Asmodeus, with a flick of his wrist, unleashed a blast of fire, incinerating the thorny vines. Lucifer, with a single arrow, brought down a branch that was blocking their way. Alpha, with a swift movement, cleared a path through the undergrowth, her movements fluid and precise.
As they continued their journey, they encountered a variety of creatures, from mischievous sprites to venomous spiders. Asmodeus, with his mastery of the elements, easily dispatched the creatures, while Lucifer provided long-range support with his deadly accurate arrows. Alpha, with her unwavering defense, ensured that neither Asmodeus nor Lucifer came to any harm.
Finally, after a hour of searching, they stumbled upon the Moonbloom Flower. It was a delicate flower, its petals shimmering with an ethereal glow. Asmodeus, with a gentle touch, plucked the flower from its stem.
With their objective accomplished, they returned to the Adventurers' Guild. The guildmaster, impressed by their swift return, awarded them a small sum of copper and praised their efficiency.
"Well done," he said,
"This is a promising start. Now go forth and prove your worth adventurers.".
The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the town square. Asmodeus, surveying the scene, felt a sense of satisfaction. Their first few E-rank quests had been completed successfully, a necessary step in their grander scheme. However, brute force and brute strength alone would not be enough to climb the ranks of the Adventurers' Guild. Knowledge, intelligence, and understanding were equally important.
"Lucifer," Asmodeus said, his voice low and thoughtful,
"I believe it's time we expanded our knowledge base."
Lucifer, ever the pragmatist, nodded.
"Agreed. The library would be a good place to start. We can gather information about the history of this world, its cultures, its flora and fauna."
Alpha, her voice devoid of emotion, simply stated, "Agreed."
And so, they made their way towards the town library, a small, unassuming building tucked away in a quiet corner of the town. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old paper and forgotten stories. An elderly man, his face etched with the lines of time, sat behind a cluttered desk, seemingly asleep.
Asmodeus, ever the pragmatist, gently tapped on the desk, startling the old man awake. "Excuse me, sir," Asmodeus said politely,
"We would like to spend some time in the library."
The old man, rubbing his eyes, looked at the three young adventurers with a weary smile. "Ah, young ones, you seek knowledge in this age of fleeting distractions?" he mused, "I always thought adventurers had forgotten the joy of reading." He chuckled softly. "But it seems there are still those who appreciate the power of the written word. Welcome."
And so, the three were allowed to browse the library's extensive collection. Asmodeus, ever the scholar, gravitated towards books on history, philosophy, and magic. Lucifer, the strategist, focused on military tactics, espionage, and the political landscape of the world. Alpha, ever the observer, delved into books on local flora and fauna, their habits, and their weaknesses.
They spent hours immersed in their studies, their minds absorbing the wealth of information available. Asmodeus, with his sharp intellect, quickly grasped the nuances of the local history, while Lucifer meticulously analyzed the political intrigues that simmered beneath the surface of this seemingly peaceful town. Alpha, with her photographic memory, absorbed every detail of the flora and fauna, her mind a vast repository of knowledge.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the library, Asmodeus glanced at the window. "It's getting late," he observed. "We should return to the inn."
Lucifer and Alpha nodded in agreement. They gathered their books, returned them to the old librarian, and thanked him for his hospitality.
They returned to the Moonlight Motel, the day's activities leaving them feeling both exhausted and exhilarated. The innkeeper greeted them with a warm smile and directed them to their room.
The room was small, but comfortable. Asmodeus suggested that they share the bed. Lucifer readily agreed, while Alpha did not offer any objection.
Asmodeus, positioning himself in the center of the bed, offered Lucifer the space on his left. Alpha, without a word, took the space on the right. It was an uncomfortable arrangement, to say the least. Asmodeus, despite his best efforts, found himself constantly aware of Alpha's presence, her cool demeanor radiating a sense of quiet intensity. Lucifer couldn't help but feel a pang of amusement at the situation.
Despite the cramped conditions, they eventually fell asleep, their minds filled with the events of the day. Asmodeus, however, couldn't shake off the feeling that this was just the beginning of a long and complex journey.
