Chapter 36: Defense Against Dark Arts

Tuesday.

As usual, Coven went to the edge of the cliff early in the morning to study '- Three Fighting Skills', and then returned to the auditorium to wait for the meal.

This morning, he had to attend two consecutive 'Defense Against The Dark Arts' classes, and this course was a big one for this week.

Defense Against The Dark Arts' professor was a middle-aged man with a balding head. His name was David Cross, and he was a new professor this year.

The professor seemed very professional. He carried a leather suitcase in each hand. After entering the classroom, he did not speak much. He first opened the leather suitcase in his right hand and placed it in the innermost part of the classroom.

On the other hand, Defense Against The Dark Arts' classroom was a rectangular room. The space was large. It was 20 meters long and 15 meters wide.

Professor David Cross took out the things in the box and then assembled them. Finally, it became a device that looked like a baseball transmitter.

After making the arrangements, Professor David slowly walked to the middle of the classroom and said to the students, "Before the lesson, I need to remind everyone that the main purpose of my lesson is to teach you how to defend against black magic, how to use magic spells to avert danger when you are in danger, not teach you black magic or evil spells."

Looking around at all the students, Professor David continued, "I don't want any fool in the future to try and ask me to teach him some evil spells or something like that."

The unfriendly tone made the students of both Slytherin and Gryffindor dare not to breathe.

Satisfied with the effect he had caused, Professor David nodded and continued, "First of all, who can answer my most commonly used defensive spell?"

All the students seemed to be frightened by the professor's previous attitude. For a moment, no one raised their hands.

When Professor David saw this, he couldn't help but have an ugly expression. He narrowed his eyes slightly and said in a deep voice, "Answer my question! Doesn't anyone know such simple common sense?"

"If that's the case, then I will be very disappointed in you. I will deduct twenty points from each of your houses."

As soon as Professor David finished speaking, the students of the two House students raised their hands.

"You say it!" Professor David pointed at a student of Slytherin.

"Professor, it's an obstacle curse."

"Yes." Professor David said with a straight face and a nasal voice. Then he asked, "Who else knows the other answers?"

The students who knew raised their hands again.

"You say it!" Professor David pointed to a Gryffindor sitting in the front row of Coven.

"There is also the armor protection spell, professor."

"Yes." Professor David used his nasal voice again.

Without giving the correct student a bonus, Professor David walked to the machine that looked like a baseball transmitter.

Standing still and turning around, Professor David said, "Listen up. Now, I will teach you the incantation of the Obstacle Spell."

Raising his voice, Professor David read, "Impedimenta*, do you remember? Impedimenta! What are you waiting for? Read it with me! IMPEDIMENTA!"

[*TL Note: The Impediment Jinx (Impedimenta), also known as the Impediment Hex, was a jinx that hindered the movement of the target, slowing it down or stopping it in its tracks. It was a common spell used in dueling.]

"Impedimenta." The uneven chanting sounded one after another.

Professor David asked everyone to read it five times before he continued, "Remember the key point of the wand. You have to throw it forward. No matter which direction, you just have to swing the wand forward and point the tip of the wand in the direction of the danger. Do you remember?"

"Got it..." The answer sounded.

"Get up, come down, and line up!" Professor David commanded.

According to their Houses, the students got up one after another and went to the open space to stand in two columns.

"Next, I will use this magic tool to shoot hollow rubber balls to you." Professor David patted the machine beside him and said, "What you have to do is to use the obstacle spell I gave you to block the rubber balls and prevent them from falling on you. Do you understand?"

"I understand..."

"Gryffindor, come first!" Professor David pointed his wand at the student at the front of the column. "Are you ready?"

"Yes, I am ready, Professor."

"..."

The student at the front of the column was called Benedict Sark. At this time, he was so nervous that he kept swallowing saliva, and the wand on his chest trembled slightly.

Professor David ignored Benedict's nervousness and immediately pressed the button on the top of the machine beside him.

With a whoosh, a red rubber ball shot out from the cylinder in front of the machine.

"Impe..."

Bang!

There was an empty, muffled sound. Before Benedict could finish chanting, the rubber ball had hit his chest. At the same time, Benedict also finished reading the last pronunciation, but because he was hit, the wand in his hand did not move, and he was stunned.

"You read so slowly. Do you think you are reciting poetry!" Professor David scolded discontentedly, "Be sharp-tongued! At the same time as you chant, wave your wand! Don't wave your wand until you finish chanting!"

"Yes, yes, professor..." Benedict responded carefully.

"Again!" Professor David said, "Get ready!"

Then, he started the machine again.

"Impedimenta!" Benedict chanted faster this time, and at the same time, he remembered what the professor said and waved the spell in advance.

Bang!

There was another sound, but unfortunately, although Benedict had successfully released the spell, he was still a step too late, and the red rubber ball hit his chest again.

"Go to the side and practice!" Professor David said with a straight face, "With me reminding you now, you still react so slowly! Do you want me to remind you when you fight with people or dangerous magical creatures in the future? Go to the side and practice the speed of casting the spell! Next!"

As Benedict walked to the side with a sad face, Coven took a step forward, his arm holding the wand hanging casually beside him.

"Are you ready?" Professor David reminded Coven.

Seeing Coven nod, Professor David pressed the button again and started the machine.

Bang!

A red rubber ball rushed out of the cylinder in front of the machine and shot at Coven.

"Impedimenta."

His voice was neither soft nor heavy, and he spoke quickly. Coven raised the wand in his hand slightly and aimed the tip of the wand in the direction of the rubber ball.

Bang!

An invisible barrier instantly blocked the rubber ball, and the rubber ball bounced back quickly. It landed halfway and rolled back to the feet of Professor David.

Professor David was slightly stunned, but he instantly put away his expression and nodded slowly. "Yes, but now is not the time for you to show off. You should do as I said and throw the wand in front of you."

"Can I ask why, Professor?" Coven asked.

"Because you won't face something as light as a ball in the future." Although Professor David's attitude was not good, he still answered the question professionally. "No one knows how many dangerous attacks you will face in the future, so the movement of you swinging your wand is to make the defensive emotions in your heart stronger. The stronger the emotions in your heart, the higher the defensive effect of the curse."

"Understood, thank you, Professor." Coven nodded and thanked him.
