Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Clash of the Cadets
The abandoned marketplace, once a hub of bustling commerce, was now a battleground. Dust motes danced in the afternoon sun, illuminating the clash of two figures. Both boys, clad in the distinctive uniform of the Institute – dark blue zip-up jackets with high, broad collars, slim-fit black pants, and black dress boots – moved with a practiced intensity that belied their apparent youth.
One of the combatants, his hair and eyes an unusual shade of vibrant blue, pressed his attack. His opponent, a Tamer named Kael, was clearly injured. A jagged gash marred his arm, crimson staining the dark blue fabric of his jacket. Beside Kael, a reptilian creature, its scales shimmering like polished obsidian, hissed menacingly. The creature, a Duskscale Serpent, glowed faintly as it channeled arcane energy. A soft, ethereal light enveloped Kael's wound, the bleeding slowing to a trickle.
"Kael, just give up," the blue-haired boy said, his voice surprisingly calm amidst the chaos. "You've already lost. This isn't worth it."
Kael spat on the dusty ground, his face contorted in a mixture of pain and defiance. "I won't… yield," he gasped, clutching his injured arm. "Not… to you, Rylan."
Rylan sighed. "You brought this on yourself, Kael. You know the rules. Now, face the consequences."
His focus shifted, and a shimmering, azure light emanated from his hands. With a swift, fluid motion, he conjured a miniature dragon, no bigger than a house cat, its scales gleaming like polished sapphires. The mini-dragon, formed entirely of water, crackled with contained energy. *Swoosh*.
Kael, despite his injury, remained unyielding. "No… I won't…" he gritted his teeth. "Cinder… attack!"
The Duskscale Serpent sprang into action. *Hiss!* It lunged, its obsidian claws slashing through the air, leaving behind shimmering trails of energy. *Crack! Crack!* These were no ordinary scratches; each swipe generated shock waves, invisible blades of force capable of dismembering flesh and bone.
Rylan, however, showed no fear. As the Duskscale Serpent's shock waves tore through the air, he simply raised his hands. The water surrounding him began to swirl and circulate, forming a protective shield. *Whirr*. The miniature dragon, meanwhile, darted through the marketplace with incredible precision, weaving between the shock waves with an almost preternatural grace. Closing the distance between itself and the Duskscale Serpent, the water dragon swung its tail viciously. *Thwack!*
The Duskscale Serpent, reacting with lightning-fast reflexes, side-stepped the watery tail, evading the attack. *Slither*. It then lunged, its obsidian claws slicing through the air, aimed directly at the mini-dragon. *Slash!*
The water dragon was torn into two by the razor-sharp claws. But instead of dissipating, the severed pieces shimmered, reforming instantly. The mini-dragon, now whole again, seemed to *expand* slightly, its form solidifying. It swung its tail once more, this time with greater force. *WHOOSH!*
The Duskscale Serpent, less fortunate this time, was struck by the enhanced tail. The impact sent the creature flying, crashing heavily into a nearby tree. *CRASH!* The reptile lay motionless against the splintered wood. But the dragon did not relent. It immediately lunged towards the downed serpent, its open mouth glowing. A bullet-like structure of highly compressed water materialized, shooting forth with incredible speed. *BOOM!*
The ground shook on impact, the force of the blast adding to the dramatic scene. Smoke slowly dissipated, revealing an unpleasant sight to Kael. The Duskscale Serpent, a gaping hole torn through its chest, lay lifelessly on the ground.
Kael stared, his face a mask of shock and disbelief.
Rylan, watching from a short distance, lowered his hands, the remnants of the water dragon dissipating. A cruel, almost mocking laugh escaped his lips. "Didn't you say you wanted to fight, Kael?" he said, his voice laced with disdain. "How come you're losing now?"
Kael, his eyes wide with fear, instinctively turned and ran.
Rylan chuckled. "Oh, no you don't." He flicked his wrist, and the water dragon, reformed and larger than before, shot after Kael. *SWOOSH*.
It wasn't long before the dragon closed the distance. Kael stumbled, falling to his knees. "No… please… Rylan, I beg you!" he cried, his voice trembling.
Rylan burst out laughing again, the sound echoing through the abandoned marketplace. "Begging? Is that all you've got left, Kael?"
The water dragon hovered above Kael, its sapphire scales gleaming menacingly.
Just as the dragon was about to strike, its form began to shimmer and disintegrate. *Fizzle*. Rylan turned away, a smirk playing on his lips. He had only taken a few steps when a feminine voice called out, "Rylan! Wait!"
