River Of Anew: Farming In Another World

Vol 3 Chapter 17: The Journey

Three days had passed since Foin had departed. The three people in the cart had different feelings throughout these three days.

Linyer was somewhat nervous as she was thinking about how she could curry favour with Foin and gather seeds for him; also, she was debating whether there would be any left in the nearest town; that was the only thing she could think of.

Énilo was enjoying the ride as she could sit on Foin's thighs. She behaved like a pet, seeking his attention, though even while she was being prepared, she kept her guard up. Despite travelling for three days with Linyer, she did not trust her one bit.

Foin, on the other hand, was bored. He was not used to such long trips. No matter how soft and comfortable the seats were since they did not stop at all, he felt uncomfortable being in one place and sleeping in that same position as well. But fortunately, on the dawn of the fourth day, they finally reached the nearest town.

"Foin, we will need to stay here for some time, but in the meantime, I promise to take a look around; maybe I will find some seeds for you! I will have the coach as your bodyguard while we stay here. I promise it will be only for a short while!"

Linyer said as the cart finally stopped. Her new goal was to inform her mother as fast as possible so that she would be informed about their current situation. As a result, She quickly opened the door and jumped out, letting the cold wind tickle Foin's nose once again.

"Please don't wander too far from the cart; I will try to be as quick as possible."

Linyer added as she left with haste. She walked all the way to the front of the cart, where she said something that Foin couldn't hear. Then, she proceeded to jog away. In the meantime, Foin slightly stretched his arms and legs and finally looked out the opened door.

Despite the previously somewhat warm inside, the window had a considerable layer of ice on it, so it was difficult to see out the window, but now that the door was open, he was finally able to take a look at the town.

They had stopped on the side of a road, finely made using smaller pieces of rocks which provided a smooth surface. Despite the heavy snow, the area that he could see was clean; only a thin layer of snow was on the ground, which had just recently accumulated.

Through the door, he could also see a large wall mostly made of stone and presumably some mud as a covering. From inside the carriage, Foin could only see a small portion of the wall, so he decided to step outside. As soon as he was outside, he noticed that the coach stood right next to him; however, he was not looking at him; instead, he was facing the wall.

The streets were filled with people. Some were just walking, but most were actually working. Some were sweeping the snow, some used shovels, and some used barrows to transport it away. Those who were removing the snow from the streets all wore thick clothes to keep themselves warm even in this cold.

Those who were focusing on pulling the barrows were something else. As soon as Foin looked at them, he was surprised. They were not wearing any clothes at all; from his perspective, they seemed like stone golems or statues. Only a few of them seemed human-like; some were massive, and some were just simply tiny.

"Master! We are so lucky that you thought of going underground! We don't have to worry about removing the snow."

Énilo said as she flew right next to Foin and slowly landed on his shoulders.

"Well, that is true, but still, I think we will have some extra work to do once the snow melts."

Foin replied as he stepped away from the cart and looked around. The town seemed like a massive industrial area. Each and every house had a chimney and was emitting a considerable amount of smoke. Seeing the seemingly not-that-special houses, Foin stepped back into the carriage and half lay down on one side of the seat. He put his bag and sword on the other seat to make space on his side.

He was in a seemingly interesting new area, a new town with species he most likely never imagined, yet he decided to stay in the cart. For some reason, he felt that was the right thing to do; something within him dictated that it would be better to stay put rather than explore.

What Linyer had said rang in his heart. Humans are not that common; what if he encountered people who didn't speak the same language as him? After all, he remembered the reaction of the coach when he first approached the carriage; they growled instead of saying anything. These worries overpowered his curiosity and made him stay completely put.

"It snows quite a bit... I wonder how much it will affect the river."

Just as he said, something new, a development, or an idea of new food hit him, and at the same time, he further experimented with his inventory. Although he only has a single fruit and a flower which could be used for flowers, storing some snow in his inventory and then using it for ice cream didn't seem that bad of an idea.

With a grin on his face, he looked behind, right over his shoulder, while still occupying one side of the carriage and looking at the snow-covered ground. As he looked behind, he noticed that Énilo was sitting atop the opened door and was smiling at him.

With a flick of his finger, he opened his inventory and, at the same time, sent it towards the snow on the ground. And just like before, a panel popped up before his eyes.

"Notice! Uncategorised item! Would you like to add a new item? Adding a new item will cost 100 points. Yes/No"

Without hesitation, he tapped on "Yes", and then the second panel popped up, which was shortly followed by another one, and then finally a last, fourth one.

"Notice! The item is being analysed!"

"Notice! Analysis completed! Item made of the following materials: Water."

"Please give a name to the item!"

Once the keyboard opened up, he typed in a very simple and straightforward "Snow" for the title. As soon as the panel had vanished, he proceeded to gather the snow in the close vicinity without sitting up from his position.
