Rising Shadows: Uchiha's Wrath

Chapter 85: Chapter 85 The Fallen Clone

Kaito straightened, his back rigid with focus, and his gaze flicked toward a distant tree at the edge of the clearing. A sharp sensation prickled at the back of his neck—he was being watched. The breeze shifted, rustling the leaves, but there was something unnatural in the stillness that followed. His eyes narrowed, scanning the area for the source.

"You've been watching for quite some time," Kaito muttered to the air, his voice calm but tinged with the weight of suspicion. "Why not come out?"

There was no immediate response, but the hairs on his neck stood on end, his senses heightened. He could feel the pulse of chakra nearby, faint but unmistakable. The figure was close—too close.

Without hesitation, Kaito drew in a deep breath, steadying himself. He closed his eyes for a split second, centring his focus. With a swift movement, he infused Senjutsu chakra into his blade, its edge shimmering with energy as the natural forces around him seemed to bend to his will.

In one fluid motion, Kaito slashed at the air, sending a wave of chakra through the tree in front of him. The blade cut through the trunk like butter, splintering the wood with a sharp crack. A high-pitched scream rang out from within the tree as if the very essence of the creature hiding there was torn free. The white figure with green hair stumbled out from behind the now shattered tree, its form flickering in and out of existence—an unmistakable Zetsu clone.

It was small but quick, and its instinct to flee kicked in immediately. The clone darted away with an unnatural, jerky motion, its footsteps barely making a sound on the forest floor. But Kaito was faster.

In an instant, he appeared beside the clone, his eyes cold and unyielding. He caught the creature's throat with a grip that could shatter stone, his fingers tightening around the slick, black-and-white skin. The Zetsu clone's mouth opened in a silent scream, but no sound escaped as Kaito squeezed harder, pinning it in place.

The creature struggled weakly, its limbs flailing in an attempt to free itself. Its chakra signature flickered wildly, desperate to resist, but Kaito's connection to the natural energy around him gave him unparalleled strength. He could feel the clone's life force waning under his grasp, the faintest tremors in his body signalling its impending doom.

"You're far too reckless," Kaito said, his voice low and filled with disdain. "Thinking you could spy on me and get away with it."

The Zetsu clone's eyes widened in fear, but it was too late. Kaito's gaze hardened as he summoned the energy within him for one final, decisive move. With a sharp twist of his wrist, he crushed the creature's throat, the final signs of its life slipping away in an instant. The Zetsu clone went limp, its body dissolving into the dark, formless mist from which it was born.

"I can't have you reporting back to your master."

In the dimly lit, damp cave, water dripped from stalactites into shallow pools scattered across the floor. The air was thick and heavy with an eerie stillness, broken only by the faint echoes of dripping water. At the center of the cavern stood a lone figure, a man with an orange, swirl-patterned mask that spiraled inward to a single eyehole. His presence radiated authority and mystery.

The masked man, known as Tobi, stood motionless, his arms folded as if waiting for someone—or something. The silence was broken by a low rustling sound as a figure began to emerge from the shadows. A black-and-white humanoid form, half dark as night and half pale as snow, rose from the ground like a plant growing unnaturally fast.

"Madara," the black-and-white being began, its voice a peculiar mix of two tones, one light and mocking, the other deep and ominous. "Your new mask suits you."

The masked man turned his single visible eye toward the speaker. "I'm no longer Madara. From now on, I am Tobi, Akatsuki's unofficial member," he corrected with a nod, his tone cold yet calm, devoid of any unnecessary emotion.

The black-and-white figure—Zetsu—tilted its head slightly, its dark half letting out a chuckle while the white side smirked. "Tobi, huh? A peculiar name for someone with such grand ambitions."

"I didn't summon you for idle chatter," Tobi said, his voice low and sharp. "Why are you here?"

Zetsu's playful demeanor faded, replaced by something more serious. "Something unexpected has happened," the creature said, its mismatched tones blending uneasily in the cave's stillness.

Tobi's posture stiffened slightly, though he remained outwardly calm. "What is it?" he asked, his voice edged with curiosity and suspicion.

"I sensed it just now," Zetsu continued, stepping closer. "One of my clones... the one trailing Uchiha Itachi and Biwa Juzo... was killed."

Tobi's head turned slightly, and though his face was obscured by the mask, the air around him seemed to grow colder. "Killed?" he repeated, his tone laced with menace.

"Yes," Zetsu confirmed, its black half adding in a guttural tone, "Whoever it was, they didn't leave a trace of hesitation. It was quick, precise, and powerful."

The silence that followed was suffocating. Tobi's visible eye narrowed, his gaze fixed on the ground as if deep in thought. After a long pause, he spoke, his voice steady but carrying a dangerous undertone.

"Itachi and Juzo were being monitored. That alone was a risk," he mused aloud, more to himself than to Zetsu. "But someone strong enough to kill your clone so effortlessly... This is an unanticipated variable."

Zetsu's white half chuckled lightly, though there was no humour in the sound. "Whoever it was, they weren't ordinary. They knew what they were doing."

Tobi nodded, his gaze lifting as if peering into the future only he could see. "We'll deal with this... anomaly. If they are a threat, they will be eliminated."

With that, the tension in the cave lingered.
