Chapter 28 - Embarrassing life
Kyrain and Nyx fell into a day to day lifestyle where they would pretend to do things around the house that each of them could reasonably do with their specific injuries. A few weeks went by of them hobbling around the house, but they when they needed a break.
Over the course of the weeks, both Kyrain and Nyx came to truly respect people who were truly injured especially veterans. They didn't get to riftwalk away from their injuries. They dealt with it every day with no break.
Kyrain could tell that Nyx had little to no home making skills which made sense considering her dad was so powerfully placed and they sounded well to do. She would wash dishes as that was simple enough, but laundry and other things around the house, she was hopeless. She even got bored and tried cooking something. When the smoke alarms went off Kyrain did his absolute best not to laugh, but failed when her face went red and she started huffing in frustration.
Nyx glared at him and then threw a plastic cup at him when he had to inform her that whatever she was making was beyond done by the time that particular timer went off.
Nyx still frustrated pulled out her phone and sent a text. After a few minutes she looked at Kyrain. "I'll be back." She said as she put her arm back in the disguise and limped out the door to the car leaving Kyrain to fix everything back up.
- Nyx -
She never cooked or did a lot of the stuff around the house. She always had staff and servants that did that thanks to her dad. Now, with none of that, she needed to learn to be on her own. After she burned the simple biscuits, she needed to figure something and their was one person who she thought she could ask.
She messaged Brittanie Ekart. She arrived and went up to the door which Brittanie had open save for the screen door.
Brittanie looked at her still upset look and raised her eyebrows. "You guys are not even dating yet and you're already coming over to get away from him?" She said with a smirk.
Nyx looked up at her confused then it clicked. "No we're not...it's not...well not completely him." She said collapsing into Brittanie's couch.
Brittanie was in her loungewear watching some mental game show where people had to figure out who was the murderer and if they did they get tons of cores, but she stopped and listened to the young girl.
"Then what is the problem?" Brittanie asked.
"I have read books and watched videos about things people do at home like cooking and whatnot, but I tried to do biscuits and gravy and burned it all. Then rather than be graceful about it, Kyrain started laughing and said when the smoke detector goes off the food has been done for a while." Nyx said with a huff.
Brittanie just smirked and giggled. "You expected to be good at things right away? You said the other day that you were well to do and didn't do much of this stuff. If you can't laugh when you mess up, you're in for a hard time." She said.
"It's embarrassing." Nyx responded.
"Uh...yeah. Many things people deal with especially us women are embarrassing. You get used to it. It was pretty embarrassing having a kid. I'm on a bed, legs up...." Brittanie started, only to have Nyx close her ears and shut her eyes.
"Mrs. Ekart! Please no! I would be grateful just to take your word for it." Nyx exclaimed going extremely red with the blunt honesty from the woman.
Brittanie got up, went to the kitchen. She opened up a cabinet and pulled a small book from it. She walked back in to the living room and handed it to Nyx.
"Here if you want to learn to cook, just follow these recipes. I copied these down for the kids and maybe one day grandkids. This is one of the many copies I've made." She said.
Nyx smiled and thanked Brittanie and began to leaf through the book and ask questions.
- Kyrain -
Kyrain was scrubbing out the oven after he opened up the house to get the burn smell out of it, which was annoying in a wheelchair. He wanted to just get up, but didn't in case someone was looking into the house. Which was currently the case.
With his Tier 6 aether sense he could see a car parked down the road with two people in it seeming to watch the house. They had been there for about a half hour. He was outside when they pulled up. He slowly pretended to stand out of the wheel chair and affected a small fall for them to see that he couldn't even walk and was a sitting duck.
Kyrain's gut feeling was telling him these might be the people, but he didn't want to react too early. He needed to draw them all in so they couldn't get away. If things continued and he kept being watched it was a matter of time, before they did more. Another twenty minutes went by when the car pulled into the driveway and Nyx slowly got out, limping into the house.
"You see we are being watched?" She asked.
"I see them. They have been there for about an hour or so. Certainly didn't take them long to scope us out. It could be our gang, or another group altogether. In case it's a new group we will take them down when they enter." Kyrain responded.
He turned to her. "Where did you go?" He asked.
"Just on a drive. I was frustrated." She replied walking toward the kitchen where they had the viewing screen of the cameras they had around the property, one camera of which, was pointing down the street.
"Are we following them tonight?" She called from the kitchen.
Kyrain closed his eyes and opened up his aether sense and watched the two men in the car.
"I don't think we need to. If we are patient and let them continue coming to us, they may do the work for us. Worst case scenario they move on from us and we track their car. If we follow them and it turns out they spotted anyone tracking them they will go to ground til they are comfortable." Kyrain said.
Nyx nodded and continued to watch the cameras for a few minutes longer before dimming the screen.
"I'm headed to bed." She said letting her hair down and walking down the hall.
Kyrain couldn't help but watch the nearly silver haired woman walk away. He looked down narrowed his aether sense to give her privacy as attractive as she is, he was raised to be a gentleman.
"I might be in trouble..." He muttered to himself.
