Chapter 25: Reward
Konoha Hospital, Tsunade's Office, Third Floor.
"Teacher, is there really nothing you can do? You're a Sannin!" Dosuke sat on a stool, staring at the test report in his hand.
Tsunade crossed her arms, highlighting her figure.
She leaned forward, placing her hands on the desk. "You little brat."
"You're an experienced doctor yourself. Can't you understand Takuto's situation?"
"If you hadn't reconnected his legs and treated him back then, he'd have no hope of even walking normally. Do you get it?" Tsunade said with a neutral expression.
"I understand, it's just… Can Takuto really never be a ninja again?" Dosuke asked helplessly.
"Dosuke, I know how you feel. I understand helplessness better than you do. I'm just one of the Sannin, not a god, and you've done enough," Tsunade said, straightening up and patting his shoulder.
"Sometimes, being a civilian is a good choice, far better than those who die in wars or missions," she added, her voice tinged with sadness as she gazed out the window.
"Understood, teacher. I'll head to the lab first," Dosuke said, setting the report down.
"Wait, don't go to the lab yet," Tsunade called out.
"The Third Hokage said you performed well on this mission. He asked me to see if you want any rewards or ninjutsu to learn."
"Can I choose any ninjutsu?" Dosuke responded eagerly to Tsunade's question.
The chance to learn new ninjutsu was a perfect opportunity to boost his skills.
As a commoner ninja, Dosuke had little access to advanced ninjutsu. Ninja clan descendants refine chakra with family guidance from as young as three, sometimes earlier.
Commoner children, like Dosuke, only begin learning chakra refinement at age four, after enrolling in ninja school.
Without clan support, commoner kids rarely encounter advanced ninjutsu until after graduation. Thus, ninja battles often rely on taijutsu and basic three-technique skills, limited by both low chakra reserves and lack of advanced mastery.
After graduating, civilian ninjas must complete missions and pass assessments to advance, earning the chance to learn higher-level ninjutsu.
Each village guards its unique techniques closely. Leaking them could expose weaknesses to enemies, leading to casualties.
This is especially true for clan secret arts, many of which aren't recorded, passed down orally, like the Hyuga Clan's Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven, the Aburame Clan's insect techniques, or the Nara Clan's Shadow Imitation Technique.
The ninjutsu Dosuke commonly uses, Water Wall, Clone Technique, Water Bullet, Water Fang, and Water Style, are low-level techniques he developed himself, recalling their use in from anime with his exceptional chakra control.
Though he's Tsunade's apprentice, who guided him in medical ninjutsu, he still lacks a high-level trump card.
His path differs from Tsunade's. Her style combines Super Strength Strike with medical ninjutsu, giving her a combat edge with its destructive power and healing ability.
Dosuke could easily learn the Super Strength Strike with his chakra control and quick learning ability, but his nine-year-old body can't withstand it. Tsunade's Senju Clan physique gives her an advantage he lacks.
After experimenting with the Super Strength Strike, Dosuke abandoned it. The trial fractured his right arm in three places, shattering the bone into pieces. Healing took months.
Thus, Tsunade focused on teaching him medical ninjutsu.
Now, with a chance to access the village's advanced ninjutsu, he aimed for a technique he'd long coveted, one to counter tailed beasts and even Six Paths-level threats in the future.
"Don't worry, you're my disciple."
"Though you can't choose clan secret arts, I can help you select from the village techniques," Tsunade said, lifting the earlier gloom with enthusiasm.
"Come with me, and I'll guide you as your teacher," Tsunade said, leading the way.
Tsunade strode toward the Hokage Building with Dosuke.
"What! You want this?" Tsunade sat in the library within the Hokage's office, watching Dosuke flip through the restricted scroll to his chosen ninjutsu.
"Yes, teacher, this is it." Despite Tsunade's expression, Dosuke nodded firmly.
"You realize how difficult this ninjutsu is? Since its creation, only the inventor and one other village ninja have mastered it. Are you sure?"
"Teacher, don't worry. I have confidence in myself," Dosuke said, pointing to the technique in the restricted scroll.
"Alright, I'll ask the Third Hokage for the ninjutsu. Wait here," Tsunade said, leaving the library to find the Third Hokage.
Holding the restricted scroll, Dosuke thought, *As expected, ninjutsu in the restricted scroll isn't easy to obtain. Beyond the seal, the scroll lacks specific training methods.*
Like Naruto in the original story, expecting to unlock it was naive. Even bypassing the seal, Dosuke flipped through the entire scroll without finding the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique's method.
Ninjutsu requires not just hand seals but also precise chakra manipulation. The Sharingan, one of the three great dojutsu, copies movements and observes chakra flow, a truly versatile tool.
Dosuke envied it, but without the Uchiha, Senju, or Uzumaki chakra reserves, it'd be a burden, not a boon, for him.
Shaking his head, he picked up the restricted scroll again, eyeing another forbidden technique, Impure World Reincarnation.
Though tempting, using it in the village was impossible, forcing him to abandon it.
As he focused on the restricted scroll's ninjutsu descriptions, the library door opened.
*Swish.*
Tsunade tossed a scroll to Dosuke. "Kid, here's the scroll. You can't take it out, you need to memorize the training method here."
"Understood," Dosuke caught the flying scroll.
Unrolling it, he read the scroll's name.
