At first, Portugal fans protested the decision to use an English referee for the game, but eventually, neutrality was waived with both nations' agreement.
The weather didn't affect the Mercedes-Benz. Afterall, it was an indoor dome, the perfect stage for legends and heartbreak.
England vs Portugal, it was one of the matchups of the tournament.
England, fresh of dismantling a fearsome German side were a storm of momentum, blessed with young stars like Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka, and led by the ever-reliable Harry Kane.
They had silenced Germany in a brutal Round of 16 clash, proving their credentials that they belonged in this stage of the World Cup.
Portugal? Having edged past France in a historic chess match of footballing philosophies, came armed with the supreme technique of Bruno Fernandes, the brilliance of Rafael Leao, and the legacy of the ever-looming Cristiano Ronaldo; now a mentor, but still a symbol.
This wasn't just football. This was identity. Culture. Pride.
The starting lineups of both nations were already released ahead of time.
England started in a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation with Jordan Pickford in goal, while ahead of him stood the defensive quadruple of Reece James, John Stones, Fikayo Tomori, and Luke Shaw.
In midfield was the duo of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, while the creative players upfront were Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Marcus Rashford.
Harry Kane led the line as the striker, also captaining the English side.
Portugal started in a 4-3-3 formation, with Diogo Costa in goal, and a defensive quadruple of Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Antonio Silva, and Nuno Mendes starting in front of him.
The midfield trio comprised Joao Neves who benched Palhinha on the night, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes, who also captained the side.
Upfront was the attacking trio of Francisco Conceicao, Goncalo Ramos leading the line as the striker, and the electric Rafael Leao in left wing.
This was a game of heavyweights. And the atmosphere fit the stakes; electric and charged with energy.
FWEEE!
The game started.
The opening 30 minutes were a masterclass in mutual respect.
England's press forced errant passes from their opponents. Portugal's midfield rotated beautifully, Vitinha an ever-present force that wriggled through challenges, excelling in the tight spaces.
Against him was England's Jude Bellingham. Bellingham vs Vitinha became a battle within the war.
The deadlock lasted beyond the 30th minute, but then in the 35th minute, it was finally broken by a beautiful strike.
It started with a loose Kane touch. Joao Neves intercepted and fed Leao on the break. Leao danced past Reece James and squared to Bruno, who struck from outside the box; a rising bullet into the top corner.
BAM!
The goalkeeper dived but got nowhere close to the ball.
1-0 Portugal. Just like that.
The Portuguese bench exploded. Bruno Fernandes kissed the badge, enjoying a captain's moment.
Behind now, England tried to rally.
Finally, they buzzed.
Saka weaved inside. Rashford tested Costa from range. Phil Foden was a threat anytime he got on the ball, but halftime came with Portugal in command.
1-0 still.
The second half started and Thomas Tuchel made a key change; he took Foden off, bringing Cole Palmer into the game.
That was the catalyst that England needed to push off.
England pressed. They pressed again, and finally, it paid off.
BAM! GOAL!
53rd minute, Bukayo Saka!
Rashford and Palmer combined down the left, tearing through the Portuguese defense. Palmer took it from there, cutting inside before slipping it across to Saka, who rifled low under Diogo Costa.
1-1.
BOOM!
Atlanta shook with belief as England fans made their voice heard. The Three Lions had their teeth back.
But Portugal didn't flinch.
Ramos grew more dangerous in the boss. Bernardo Silva came on for Conceicao in the 65th minute, and he hit the post in the 70th.
The game was tight, end to end. It felt like a draw, it seemed destined to go to extra time, until the dagger fell.
In the 89th minute, Portugal struck a second time.
England committed too many men forward.
Joao Cancelo intercepted, pinged a diagonal to Leao. Rafeal Leao was alone, isolated, one on one with an England defender.
Trust the AC Milan boy.
BZZZ!
He danced past Tomori, stepped inside, and curled past Pickford.
BOOM!
The stadium exploded.
"RAFAEL LEAOOOOOO…!!!!" The commentator screamed.
Rafael Leao charged towards the corner flag, sliding on his knees to the roar of tens of thousands of Portuguese fans that filled the stadium.
2-1 Portugal.
There was only silence from the English end. Pure, devastating beauty.
That goal came at the worst possible timing.
And suddenly, England were on the brink of being eliminated out of the FIFA World Cup again. It felt like a curse.
But England refused.
They pushed through stoppage time, Thomas Tuchel pushing his men forward as they bravely went all in for an all-out attacking push.
England pushed Portugal all the way to their box.
Kane saw a header tipped over. Bellingham fired just wide, Cole Palmer stung Pickford's gloves with a tricky shot from range.
But time ran out.
FWEEE!
England couldn't do it. They failed in the big stage again.
[FULL-TIME: England 1-2 Portugal]
Heartbreak for England. Ecstasy for Portugal.
Another chapter in football's cruel book of moments. From the bench, Cristiano Ronaldo was like a man possessed as he celebrated the loudest.
He literally broke down in tears. He felt like he was floating; joy uncontained.
Rafael Leao won the man of the match award with his 1 goal, the winner, 1 assist, and his 4 successful dribbles.
"A chaos merchant with a poet's touch". The commentator called him.
At the end of the game, Leao faced the media.
"We knew what was coming. England are warriors. But Portugal are artists, and tonight, we painted something special".
The media harassed him, but a furious Thomas Tuchel refused to speak to them, storming off the stadium in a fit of rage.
Bruno Fernandes also faced the media.
"This team is more than names. We fight, we create, we believe. And we're not done".
