[Venue: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, USA]

It was dubbed a clash for the ages. A true battle of giants.
The weather at the MetLife was cool, clear night skies, with tension crackling in the summer air.
France vs Portugal.
A rivalry born from countless duels, heartache, and heroics.
France, mighty and imposing, boasted a lethal Kylian Mbappe in his prime up top. Portugal, resolute and resilient, trusted in experience, finesse, their captain, Bruno Fernandes, and the grace of their undying legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, who started on the bench.
Two European giants, neither willing to blink first.
The starting lineups were released an hour and thirty minutes before the game.
France started in a typical 4-2-3-1, with Mike Maignan in goal, while ahead of him was the defensive quadruple of Jules Kounde, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, and Theo Hernandez.
In midfield was the duo of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, while further ahead as the creative players were the trio of Desire Doue, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele.
Kylian Mbappe led the line as the striker on the night. But like he played for most of the tournament, many expected him to have a free role.
Portugal started in a 4-3-3 formation with Diogo Costa in goal, while ahead of him was the defensive quadruple of Joao Cancelo, Antonio Silva, Ruben Dias, and Nuno Mendes.
The midfield trio comprised Joao Palhinha, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes, while the attacking trio were Francisco Tricao, Goncalo Ramos, and Rafael Leao.
FWEEEE!
The referee's whistle eventually sounded, kick starting the game.
From the first whistle, France pressed relentlessly, their power evident.
Quickly drifting towards Dembele's side of the pitch, the left wing, Mbappe blistered down the wind early, testing Cancelo's defensive resolve.
But Portugal refused to wilt.
Bruno Fernandes dictated Portugal's rhythm, orchestrating with a conductor's poise. Yet, despite tactical brilliance from both sides, neither side broke through immediately.
It was a tough and even game, till a moment of individual brilliance tore the stalemate apart in the 34th minute.
In the 34th minute, Mbappe exploded forward, exchanged quick passes with Olise, and scorched past Ruben Dias like a ghost, unstoppable, before rifling a low shot beyond Diogo Costa to break the deadlock.
"Mbappeeeee…!" The commentator screamed.
BOOM!
The stadium exploded as French fans in the stadium roared in euphoria.
That goal demoralized Portugal's momentum as they began to struggle for long stretches of the first half.
They didn't stay poor though. Portugal regrouped, steady and composed.
Fernandes rallied his teammates, his voice fierce with determination as they successfully rode the first half out.
The first half came to an end 1-0 with France leading.
The second half? It started, and finally, the Portuguese resurgence flared.
Trailing, Portugal returned with heightened intensity.
They played like men on a mission, fueled by the passionate noise being made by their fans. Even Ronaldo didn't stay idle on the bench, rising to his feet, gesticulating wildly as he motivated his teammates.
And then, they got what they wanted… a goal.
BAM!
A rocket in the 58th minute!
Rafael Leao danced elegantly down the left flank, weaving past Kounde before unleashing a curling rocket into the top corner.
"A MAGNEFICENT EQUALIZER!" The commentator screamed.
And just like that, 1-1.
Momentum shifted. Game on.
France retaliated immediately to the Portuguese pressure though as Maignan saved heroically from Ramos' header, keeping the suddenly rampant Portuguese players at bay.
At the other end, Diogo Costa made two critical stops from Mbappe and Desire Doue. Both goalkeepers stood firm as the game raced into the dying moments.
Additional time came, exhausted, and now extra time.
At this stage of the game, fatigue set in. Muscles cramped. The pace slowed, but the passion intensified. Each challenge resonated; every pass meant more.
And this was when Cristiano Ronaldo was finally introduced into the game to a thunderous applause.
And then, in the 109th minute, fate intervened.
Portugal got a discount from fate.
It began with Bernardo Silva who was introduced late alongside Ronaldo, calm and patient. He found Fernandes just outside the area.
With a defender closing, another one tracking Ronaldo's run, Fernandes feigned left, cut right, and curled a precise shot into the far corner.
Mike Maignan was rooted helplessly to one spot.
GOAL!!!
The stadium erupted for the umpteenth time this game.
France 1-2 Portugal.
French fans felt like they were in hell.
French heads fell. Portuguese hearts soared. But Mbappe surged forward again, refusing defeat.
He moved like a hurricane, an unstoppable force of nature.
He cut inside late, and fired towards goal, only for Dias, towering and defiant to pull off one of the clutch blocks of the tournament.
And then…
FWEEE!
The game came to an end.
