Chapter 14: Jessica=Easy???
The hallway buzzed with leftover whispers, a low hum of Chad's name mixed with laughter trailing down lockers and open doors.
Jessica was leaning against a locker just past the science wing, arms folded, eyes scanning the crowd with casual focus. She wasn't waiting for anyone. At least… not officially.
When Morty passed by, she fell into step beside him like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Word travels fast," she said, keeping her tone light. "I'm guessing you've heard?"
Morty gave a faint hum neither confirmation nor denial.
Jessica gave him a sidelong glance, one brow slightly raised. "You really got under Chad's skin."
Morty adjusted the strap of his bag, walking at a steady pace. "That what they're saying?"
Jessica smirked. "Pretty much. Half the school's talking about it already. Some people think you threatened him."
Morty glanced at her expression calm, voice low. "Did I?"
Jessica gave a soft laugh. "That's the thing… nobody knows."
They moved past a group of freshmen gawking at Morty like he'd grown a second head. Morty didn't spare them a glance.
Jessica kept pace with him, falling into a rhythm. "You're different lately."
"Maybe."
"You used to be..." She caught herself, smiling. "Not like this."
Morty's head tilted slightly. "Like what?"
She walked a step ahead, turning so she could look at him over her shoulder. "Like you know exactly what you're doing."
He held her gaze for a breath long enough for the flicker of curiosity in her eyes to sharpen.
"I do," Morty said simply.
Jessica blinked. She hadn't expected him to say it like that. No blush. No stammer. Just a statement of fact.
They reached the stairwell, and for a moment, Jessica seemed like she might peel off toward her next class.
But instead… she lingered.
"You're not even surprised I'm talking to you, are you?" she asked.
Morty offered the ghost of a smile. "Should I be?"
Jessica laughed a soft, genuine sound. "I guess not."
For half a heartbeat, something passed between them an unspoken shift in balance. Jessica wasn't used to guys like Morty. Or rather… she wasn't used to this version of him.
Morty kept his stance easy, voice smooth. "I've got class."
Jessica gave a small nod. "See you around, Morty."
He turned, walking up the stairs without looking back.
Jessica watched him go eyes narrowing slightly, lips pressed together in something halfway between a smile and a thoughtful frown.
She'd meant to corner him.
Instead… she'd ended up chasing his shadow.
And Morty?
He didn't give it a second thought.
Girls like Jessica always looked hard to get.
But they were easier than most if you knew how to keep your footing.
And Viktor never lost his footing.
