Chapter 191: Regrets
She went to her bedroom to get her mobile phone and called an ambulance. When she came out again, her mother was still beating on the sofa. She didn't ask anything and just stood aside, waiting for the ambulance.
When they heard the ambulance, her mother who was sweating buckets by now and her hand that was holding the rolling pin had bruises on the palm, stopped her crazy act and threw the rolling pin to the ground.
She then sat on the sofa as if nothing had happened and as if the living room didn't stink of blood.
When the paramedics entered, they were shocked by the scene in front of them. However, seeing the patient, there was no time to waste and immediately started performing first aid.
Seeing that they couldn't help, they decided to take him to the hospital and her mother had followed. She had instructed her to stay at home and clean the whole house.
"Make sure every corner of the house is spotless before we come back." She instructed and followed the paramedics.
That was the last time she saw her mother as a free citizen.
Her father died on the way to the hospital and her mother took the blame. Doctors and experts were invited to examine her arm to see if it had any signs of trauma from swinging the rolling pin so much when she beat her husband and indeed, they found her arm bruised and muscles tensed from swinging the rolling pin too much.
The female soldier had the moment her mother was charged with manslaughter because it was ruled as self-defense to become part of the law enforcement. Since the law sometimes was bent towards the rich and powerful and refused to protect the weak, she decided to be a part of it so that she could provide help to those who needed it like her mother.
Because her mother didn't want to implicate her with her criminal record and limit her future prospects, she had cut off all ties with her and even legally severed their relationship as mother and daughter as soon as she was arrested.
The female soldier didn't even get to go to court because she had no relationship with her mother.
At that moment, she made up her mind to do better and prevent such tragedies from happening in many families.
However, she had not expected to run into something even more chilling than her father's beatings.
Now, she realized that the training they received was not suitable for the current apocalyptic world. They needed to adjust their ways of dealing with things.
"Don't cry, everything will be alright." The female soldier comforted the girl while still hugging her.
"Mmm…they deserve what they got." The girl said with a muffled voice as she buried her face in the soldier's chest.
Leng Pan was boiling with anger after listening to the girl's narration. She wished she could kill them over and over again.
How could there be people who were so inhumane in this world? They didn't even care to show an ounce of respect to the old or the young.
She felt defeated when she remembered that now there wasn't even a centralized place like a police station to report such matters when they occurred.
Civilization had basically collapsed and the world had fallen into anarchy. There was no longer a justice system where one could be tried and convicted if they committed a crime.
Now, justice was in the hands of the capable. For instance, what Leng Pan had done wasn't something that could have been done before the apocalypse. She would have been convicted as a serial killer and sentenced to death.
However, now anyone who wanted to condemn her for her actions had to have the strength to back up their accusations, not evidence like before.
The only silver lining in this kind of justice is that bad people cannot get away with crimes anymore for lack of evidence. As long as you are sure it's them, no need to argue, just take action and eliminate them.
When Lu Zhen walked back to the group of soldiers, he could feel the heaviness in the atmosphere and the fury radiating off of his wife.
He wondered what had happened to her in just the few minutes he was talking to that leader.
He walked behind his wife and circled his arms around her waist. His face next to hers, he whispered in her ear.
"Baby, what happened?"
"Those beasts, I wish I hadn't killed them so quickly. I should have tortured them some more before chopping them into pieces and feeding them to dogs." Leng Pan complained with both anger and grievance in her voice.
Lu Zhen wondered again what had happened the few minutes he had stepped away. Which blind person had offended his beloved wife?
Thinking of this, he proceeded to ask, "Did some blind idiot offend you?" As he asked this, his eyes, like a hawk surveyed the people around them.
The timid ones turned and ran while the others felt a chill run down their spines. That gaze was terrifying and predatory. They didn't want it to be targeted at them.
Leng Pan realized that her husband might have misunderstood something and hurriedly explained.
"It's those beasts burning on the ground. I didn't expect them to have done so many inhumane things. If I had known I wouldn't have let them off so easily."
Those standing near them heard their conversation and the urge to run intensified.
What did she mean that she wouldn't have let the thugs go easily if she had known about their crimes? Was what they saw called letting them go easily? Then what did giving them a hard time look like?
"I can let the fire burn slowly, they will be burning for days if you want. That should teach them to be human in their next lives." Lu Zhen suggested and Leng Pan felt that the suggestion was good.
