Chapter 130: Spirit of All Living Beings

Maybe Bai Shou's luck had finally turned?

She never expected to encounter a hidden inheritance. After all, Bai Shou wasn't even aware of where she should be going. She'd taken to the wilds the past few days, steadily refining the Wisdom Path loot.

Still, she was intent on observing the encountered Inheritance Site. If hidden enough, she might even make the location her temporary residence. However, she still hadn't forgotten the strange reaction after she used the Heaven's Will Gu and felt a sense of unease sticking under her skin.

But what could she do except prepare for the worst?

And to tackle the worst, she had to be at her best. So, finding a temporary residence before exploring her surroundings was the best method. She could refine more Human Adaptive Qi Gu and sneak into other sects if fortunate enough. This time, she wouldn't have the risk of raising the alarm since the failure of Gu Refinement didn't entail the materials' demise.

Bai Shou's surroundings were dark. She was deep underground, in a tunnel constantly elongated by the Earthwolf Spider's drill-like feelers. Using the Eye Gu allowed her to route the Earthwolf to natural air pockets and underground springs with fresh, breathable air to sustain her journey. Still, she didn't encounter any Spirit Springs.

She quietly touched the reinforced wall and observed the site's interior. The wall she encountered wasn't the natural entrance.

Scan The Dao.

Bai Shou inspected the wall's material, noting the Earth Path Dao Marks but nothing else. The marks she witnessed were similar to the Body Refinement marks on her form, meant to reinforce her flesh and bones. But she wasn't satisfied with just this. What if the other portion of the wall hosted the use of a Gu similar to a trigger and ruined the entire Inheritance just because she was impatient?

So, Bai Shou circled around the Inheritance Site, noticing its shape similar to an underground pyramid, with the top half extending into a massive Tree King surrounded by several hundred Tree Vine Beasts.

Once satisfied, Bai Shou drilled through, instantly noticing the fresh air lingering inside the man-made structure.

Covering the entrance with the dirt she had pushed out, Bai Shou's gaze swept over her surroundings.

'A Righteous Path Inheritance?' Bai Shou speculated while looking through the hall. Despite the lack of artificial materials like concrete or wooden planks for flooring, the ground hall was elegant and tidy, with the floor and ceiling appearing smooth. There were no torches or traps, at least not in Bai Shou's immediate vicinity.

'Sigh…'

Bai Shou didn't take long to reach the pyramid's central point. The entire site was suspiciously empty.

Yet, the deep-gray gravestone in the empty room cleared most of Bai Shou's doubts.

'This Inheritance was thoroughly plundered long ago.' Bai Shou clicked her tongue. The markings on the gravestone were too poor and rotten by time to be read, indicating how late she arrived.

'I suppose it will do as a residence then,' Bai Shou stretched her arms. Several hollow roots connected the pyramid's interior with the upper world, making the lack of oxygen a ridiculous worry.

Taking a few hours to freshen up and rest, Bai Shou soon returned to her usual workflow. She was unwilling to break into Rank 5 using her first Aperture until she managed to rid the Invisibility Gu of its suppression. That way, she could use the outstanding concealment Gu Worm as Rank 5 Gu Master.

A mere thought spread out eleven Rank 5 Dreamer Gu, each tasked with prioritizing the refinement of the Qualitative Dream Gu.

Meanwhile, Bai Shou began mulling over her recent discoveries.

First, she took out the familiar scorpion and the sky-blue orb with floating clouds within.

They were the Rank 5 Heaven's Will Gu and Sky Strength Gu.

However, Bai Shou's recent discoveries placed the latter's name into doubt.

Sky Strength, Wind Strength, Fire Strength, Phantom Strength, Earth Strength, etc… the series of the Gu Worms worked to enhance the effects of their named Paths or allowed the Borrow Strength Gu to fuel the Gu Master with an Element's power!

However, the main focus of her current discovery wasn't the Strength Path.

No.

The Sky Strength and the Wind Strength appeared and sounded the same at a glance. But that wasn't the case.

Wind Strength Gu granted the Gu Master to improve the effects of Wind Path Gu Worms.

Sky Strength?

There was no Sky Path. It also didn't work on the Cloud Path either.

Imaginative Immortal once noted how the Sky Strength Gu was too limited in number and had to pay a relatively exorbitant price to purchase the one in Bai Shou's possession.

What Bai Shou found was a similarity…

She found a similar 'strand' of defining shard of the Dao in Heaven's Will, Sky Strength, and Lifespan Gu. Furthermore, Bai Shou's body possessed that discreet strand of the shard connected with her lifespan.

Obviously, Heaven's Will and Sky Strength had nothing to do with her Lifespan. Yet, despite being Wisdom and Strength Path Gu Worms, something Bai Shou already confirmed, these two also shared that common factor.

It wasn't rare.

Boiling Steam Gu shared its Dao shard with Fire and Water Paths. Shadow Sword Gu boasted a connection with light and dark paths. The two paths' melded shard represented something neither light nor dark.

Indeed, that was the Shadow Path.

However, the situation with Heaven's Will and Sky Strength wasn't the same: two paths combined to form a unified Dao Shard represented something entirely different. No.

It was the case of Strength and Wisdom Paths adopting slight aspects from the Path the Lifespan, and her lifespan seemed to originate from…

Laughably, Bai Shou believed she might discover a similar strand in Heaven's Gaze Gu Worm's shard. It was another Rank 5 Gu Worm she plundered from the unknown Wisdom Path Gu Master and boasted the ability to predict the future.

However, the truth was different. The Wisdom Path Gu Worm adopted slight aspects from Time and Information Paths.

'What path is that?' Bai Shou grunted.

The mysteries and work kept on piling up.

A clone's need continued to rise in her mind, but that signified more work.

There was another matter.

'I need to eventually search for compatible Beast Emperors to devour their hearts and advance the Beast Phantoms on my body.'

See?

More work.

Bai Shou would have loved to make a list and prioritize each task concisely before getting to work. Unfortunately, her situation wasn't stable enough to enjoy luxuries such as peace of mind.

Without wasting more time, Bai Shou delved into her studies. Her first order of business, after becoming decent with the unnamed Gu Master's set, was to research a way of creating another Clone Gu. At least, she had to form a recipe around the Hairy Transformation and the Dreamer Gu.

The Gu Set she obtained boasted an outstanding synergy.

Heaven's Will Gu boosted a Gu Master's comprehension.

The Rank 5 Heaven's Gaze Gu consumed a lot of thoughts to peer a few seconds into the future. But Bai Shou was sure the unknown Gu Master used the current set as a Killer Move to enhance its effects.

Rank 5 Still Mind Gu was a rare Wisdom Path defensive Gu, capable of nullifying several thought and emotion-altering effects from other Gu Worms, like Hu Mei Er's set.

Rank 4 Knowledge's Bounty Gu was another extinct Wisdom Path Healing Gu. The more knowledgeable a Gu Master was, the better the healing effects on the Gu Master's body. It was the Wisdom Path's equivalent of the Self-Reliance Gu, but several times rarer and expensive.

Rank 4 Healthy Mind Gu was also a Healing Gu. However, it didn't heal the body but the metaphysical mind within the soul. Still, it was slightly more unorthodox. The best way to use the Gu Worm, as far as Bai Shou was aware, was to utilize the Gu Worm before researching or refining anything. It would fill the mind with a refreshing energy that continuously improved the Gu Master's condition during strenuous activities by consistently dealing with the mental stress live.

Rank 4 Just Thoughts Gu filled the Gu Master's head with Just Thoughts, best used to formulate plans that emboldened the user's sense of justice. It was of the same stock as the Brave Thoughts and the Derivation Mind Gu.

Rank 4 Scroll Carpet Gu was a Movement Gu in the shape of a scroll that was wide enough to accommodate a human during flight.

Rank 4 Storage Booklet Gu was the unknown Gu Master… well, Jiu Loong Long's Storage Gu. Bai Shou had browsed through the Storage Gu but failed to find anything concrete about the former's origins save for a few letters his younger brother, Jiu Loong Jin, wrote.

And finally, one of Bai Shou's more appreciated loot was the Rank 5 Wisdom Carriage.

She basically lounged in the austere, ceremonial carriage the entire time, enjoying the sense of her mind slightly more active than usual without any additional costs!

Of course, the effects would improve if she used her Primeval Essence to conduct the Carriage's ability.

Still, Bai Shou knew the same effects would have been even better for a Wisdom Path Gu Master because their body refinement was tailored to make planning more efficient.

<<<>>>

Every Gu Worm hosted limits unique to them. The Vengeful Guidance Gu was no different. Its ability was already quite outstanding, allowing a Gu Master to locate their source of vengeance without additional clues. However, the limitations of said Gu Worm depended on the user's vengeance.

In Jiu Loong Jin's case, he wanted to avenge his elder brother and locate his murderer. However, murder was a technical term because Gu Worms, too, were living beings. And what the Middle Stage Rank 5 Gu Master encountered was a ruined forest section, the remnants of a massive explosion that didn't leave any corpse behind. The bald Jin thinned his lips with a dark look. It wasn't the worst-case scenario since he had already anticipated his brother not being directly killed by the enemy.

But it was the Information Path's expertise to locate clues others couldn't imagine.

The Information Path was a Dao second only to omniscience, with legends boasting of a massive wall that once recorded every event in the Gu World.

His surroundings may be a ruin, but they whispered a tale of unjust execution. A familiar, colorful scorpion with a yellow stinger appeared in Jiu Loong Jin's hand.

Rank 5 Heaven's Will.

Rank 5 Heaven's Gaze.

Rank 4 Whisper.

Rank 4 Past Tale.

Killer Move: Heaven's Story Time!

Jin set a defense perimeter around himself before closing his eyes and allowing the call of Dao to whisper the noises of his surroundings. These noises were brief and disconnected. He heard the fluttering foliage, the creaking wooden carriage—

His brother's voice!

"Heh, the thief is intimate with the surroundings while we aren't. They must have realized the weakness of my Investigation Killer Move by now and are trying to get some distance. However, they will never succeed in escaping. If we can find them once, we can find them again."

"Isn't that right, Elder Ku?"

Then Jin heard the sound of snoring as he grew alert.

'Elder Brother and whoever was beside him fell asleep?'

It must be how the murderer killed his brother.

'Elder Ku? An Elder from a nearby sect? I'll have to visit the Rhino Stomp Sect to confirm things. It's the only sect in the vicinity.'

*Hiss*

Jin suddenly heard a terrifying hiss.

'This sound… I've never heard of any snake like this. Is it a Gu or a man-made species?' He frowned and tried to listen, but all he heard next was a massive explosion that snapped his eyes open!

A deep sense of exhaustion filled his body as Jin wiped the sweat collected on his brows.

'Heaven's Story Time is still an incomplete invention. It consumes too much Primeval Essence and thoughts and even puts a massive burden on my soul. Elder Brother wrote to me about how he could get a unique resource for soul strengthening… sigh.'

Jin bit his lips.

'I can't use the Killer Move until my soul has rested at least a month. But it's fine. I already have a few essential clues.'

'The enemy has a method of bypassing refined mind and soul to put the target to a deep sleep, has access to a snake… snake… are there other tracks?'

His gaze glinted.

'Let's look around more before checking in on the sect and… that village. It's quite close to the forest. Maybe others could have seen something.'

"No, no!" Bai Shou shook her head. "You've got it all wrong. We cannot just slap those two Gu Worms together alongside some refinement materials and call it a day!" She spoke animatedly to the group of dazed and quiet Dreamer Gu. "Dao is not as simple as math. Even if I conceptualize a Dao Shard for the Hairy Man Gu, it won't be as simple as 1+1=2!"

She sighed and shook her head. It's been a while since she cut off any human connection. However, talking to the Dreamer Gu did not indicate she was losing her mind. Far from it! First, these Dreamer Gu weren't actually dumb and could understand what she was speaking about—for the most part. So, when they entered those weird dream realms, they would better understand Refinement itself, boosting their success rate of refining Dream Gu!

Second, talking to dummies allowed Bai Shou to organize her thoughts for better productivity.

"See? Ordinarily, a Gu Master gains attainment by understanding the Gu and, through it, the Dao. With that, we get instincts about the Dao Marks and Dao Shards in the materials and other Gu Worms, allowing us to form the basic concepts of recipes and Killer Moves. The Particle Viewing Gu changes the game! Now, we can view the Dao Shard. We can see what marks make what regions—allowing a Gu Master to precisely understand the required materials."

"For instance," she began to pace around as if teaching a class. A stick appeared in her hand as she drew a mark on the ground. "Look at this circle."

The eleven pairs of eyes looked at the drawn circle.

"Think of it as a Dao Shard. Now, one-third of the line is green, and the remaining is brown. It signifies the Dao Shard belongs to an Earth Path Gu with aspects supporting the Wood Path. Now, inside this circle are other marks that complete the shard. These marks depict the Gu Worm's use, possible advancements, and more. Do you understand?" She smirked. "Dao Marks and Dao Shards they form are what we would call primordial language—the source of communication between the Humans, who are the spirit of all living beings, and the Gu—the essence of the Grand Dao! Mastering and understanding this language is the source of everything!"

She animatedly spread her arms in a grand display before meeting the eleven pairs of unimpressed eyes.

"Ehm," she coughed and cleared her throat into a fist. "Yes, you guys are right. I haven't gotten a good lay for a long time."

"Anyway," she continued. "Now comes the issue with Refinement. As I said before, it's not as simple as 2+2=4!"

At this point, one of the Dreamer Gu raised its hand.

"Yes?"

The Dreamer Gu quietly wrote something on the ground.

—1+1=2—

"Ah, yes. It's the same thing," Bai Shou smiled. "The issue is that refinement is the process of arranging the Dao Shard and Dao Marks within the materials by adding said Dao Marks or subtracting them—twisting and connecting them, bunching or separating them! Ordinarily, all we need is to understand the ingredients in the recipe, and we will achieve the impossible. You know it! 100% Success Rate every time!"

"But it's not possible. We refine in the real world, and our surroundings are saturated with uncountable Dao Marks… they always interfere with the refinement process because Dao Marks are constantly conflicting and simultaneously complementary."

"That is why the Refinement Path Killer Moves and Gu Worms like the Undefeated Hundred Battles Gu exist. It is to tackle the effects of surrounding Dao Marks. Undefeated Hundred Battles actually…"

Bai Shou stopped.

She snapped her fingers and turned the Dreamer Gu into their original straw-doll appearance as they shot into her Aperture.

Scan The Dao.

Bai Shou used the Killer Move on the Undefeated Hundred Battles and frowned. It wasn't the first time she observed the Undefeated Hundred Battle Gu. Back at San Cha, Bai Shou managed to get another Undefeated Hundred Battles by killing on of the Hairy Men before feeding it to the Particle Viewing Gu.

'Sure, it was surprising the first time.'

She noted the Gu Worm's Dao Shard. Undefeated Hundred Battles was not a Refinement Path Gu. It was another Human Path Gu with aspects of the Refinement Path. The Refinement Path's equivalent of the Undefeated Hundred Battles was none other than the Rank 5 Success At First Attempt Gu Worm.

'Success At First Attempt must be a Refinement Path Gu adopting aspects of the Rule Path. But the Undefeated Hundred Battles… It's not my first Human Path Gu. The Dreamer Gu is another Human Path Gu Worm, and so are the Human Adaptive Qi, Primeval Elder, Half Effort, Relics, and Hope Gu Worms.'

'All these have varied effects. But that's expected from every path. Yet, every path has expertise in something. The Strength Path is good in the reinforcement of the physical body and can extend to the reinforcement of the mind and soul. The Refinement Path is outstanding for refining the Gu Worms and the Dao Marks forming them. The Rule Path is one of the more all-encompassing Dao, and it supports and benefits almost every other path. Earth Path is stable and good for defensive options, with more options tailored for Organizations to set their territories. The Blood Path is among the most outstanding Offensive Paths alongside the Lightning, Sword, and Blade Paths. Yet, all these Paths also delve into a more conceptual side. For instance, the Blood Path's Blood Skull has an amazing effect on a Gu Master's aptitude. Lightning Path is a significant counter to the Soul Path because it 'purifies' evil intent and metaphysical maliciousness. Sword and Blade Paths boast a severing intent, boasting the ability to cut other Paths.'

'Each aspect of the Dao has a basic and more philosophical side.' Bai Shou sat down and casually wiped away the Dao Shard she drew on the ground.

'I want to walk the Human Path. But what are its advantages? First, I can replace several materials with humans. Second, the Gu Worm, like Half Effort Gu, allows a Gu Master to cultivate quicker and has more lasting effects than the Food Path's Liquor Gu or Soaked Wall Gu. Third, it has shown a method of cloning oneself alongside allowing the clones to possess Apertures. Wait… the Bone Flesh Unity Gu Worm refined by Grey Bone Scholar is also a Human Path Gu. I'm sure of it. Several materials conflict, leaving only the Dao Marks related to the Human Path. So, fourth, it can allow a Gu Master to share each other's essence, like I do with my Dreamer Clones.'

'Fifth, it can directly increase our cultivation rank and nurture the Aperture Wall. Sixth, the Vital Human showed how I could eventually share everything with Hu Mei Er, even our Dao Marks. Seventh, the Undefeated Hundred Battles deal with unneeded Dao Marks in the surroundings to ensure the Gu Refinement's success…'

Bai Shou frowned.

There must be a common ground between these effects.

After all, despite their diverse effects, every path always had something in common.

For instance, the Sword Path. It was sharp and deadly. Even the defensive Killer Moves 'cut' the attack, achieving a defensive effect through offense. Furthermore, their healing Killer Moves 'attacked' the injuries. Every Path achieved these effects from a singular, common point that defined the aspect of the Grand Dao.

'Dao Marks…'

Bai Shou closed her eyes and mulled. She was very close to something…

Something.

Hope Gu awakened apertures.

Relic Gu nourished the aperture walls.

The Second Aperture created a new aperture.

Fake Aperture faked an Immortal Aperture.

If it was nothing but the interaction of the Gu with the Dao Marks within the Human Body. Those born without adequate Dao Marks failed to awaken their apertures or boasted low aptitudes. Meanwhile, monsters in human skin defied Heaven with their very existence and claimed rights to Extreme Physiques.

A glimpse of pure white and cold blue suddenly overtook Bai Shou's thoughts as she sighed softly.

Bai Ning Bing…

She would probably laugh at her current dilemma.

That dumb broad would just think of the most straightforward idea and make it work—claiming the Human Path was best at what Humanity achieved—the control of Dao Marks…

Bai Shou's eyes shot open.

'You're right…' Her lips parted open slightly.

'Bitch, you're definitely right…' Bai Shou allowed the dumbfounded expression to settle on her features as she felt her once sluggish thoughts about the Human Path regain their vigor as if they'd overcome a natural blockade.

And in Bai Shou's mind, she could imagine the smug smirk staring back.

'Human Path… Humans and Variant Humans wield the Dao. Human is the spirit of all living beings… such a simple statement that somehow explains the Human Path in its entirety. Primordial Origin… truly, Humanity's First Son.'

'Human is the spirit of all living beings—the spirit of all Dao Marks! A being that studies the Dao and accepts it.'

"Holy fuck…" Bai Shou whispered. Her thoughts were in overdrive as they reached further beyond the concept of clones. She suddenly understood something crucial.

She not only felt the glory of the Human Path but could predict its potential. It was like a glorious, heavenly door that creaked open the slightest bit and flooded her mind with unlimited possibilities!

She understands it now!

'The secret of Dual Cultivation… the Bone Flesh Unity could be considered the barest prototype in that direction. The Vital Human Killer Move achieved some success in that thought process… but I'm sure. Human Path… it's the way to go if I want to access the secrets of Chen Jiu's Dual Cultivation method.'

'I need humans,' Bai Shou shot to her feet. 'Adaptive Qi? That's just the bare minimum such fine resources can offer. No. More. Humans have a lot more than I ever imagined! They have the potential to defy heaven—Apertures. The first Human struggled against fate and created Humanity itself! Truly, what lies beyond the sky is our limit!'

Bai Shou had difficulty calming down, and it was rare for her to lose her cool.

'I need to find more populated cities and lie low.'

Clones… Apertures… Adaptive Qi… and the method of understanding Dual Cultivation.

What else can she gain from the Human Path?

'I guess it's true—teaching others is as beneficial to others as it is to the teacher.'

She smirked and cleaned her surroundings before planning a trip.

As for what cleaning up meant?

'Well, I can't progress in Human Path alone. I need the population's support. Ah, I guess I can see why Blood Sea Ancestor also wanted to experiment on Humans. The Blood Path Dao Marks in our blood must be more beneficial than blood found in other beings.'

She began destroying every inch of the site and burying it with tons of dirt.
