Chapter 111: Success And Failures

San Cha Mountain continuously attracted renowned figures as the information about the Inheritance spread further. The lack of a Demonic Path Overlord of at least Rank 4 Peak Stage allowed Yi Huo and Yi Jun Hie to suppress the unruly faction. There might be a few daring individuals, but almost all Rank 4 Demonic and Lone Gu Masters retreated into their temporary residences, anxiously discussing to find a breakthrough!

Feng Tian Yu was a highly accomplished figure of the Lone Faction. The tales of Three Kings' Inheritance successfully lured the Refinement Path expert! Feng Tian Yu was once a Clan's Young Leader, a man so brilliant in Refinement Path that he fused a Rank 5 Gu Worm as a Rank 3 Gu Master! The Rank 5 Gu Worm only had a pitiful lifespan of half a day. But nobody could deny his talents.

However, his Clan's eradication due to a conflict left him roaming the Southern Border, spreading his legends. He was indifferent to conflicts and focused solely on refining the Gu.

His arrival had momentarily roused other Lone Forces. They wished the 'Half-Wit Refiner' to blaze open a trail for everyone into the Inheritance. He received many invitations, yet Feng Tian Yu excitedly accepted Yi Huo's call to refine a rare Fire Path Gu.

As others despaired, one man felt gleeful.

Feng Tian Yu!

He's here?!

Lo Jik's gaze glimmered. He didn't care about inheritance and focused on preparing the first set of materials that Bai Ning Bing had collected. Li Xian's network also revealed that the Tie Clan was almost upon San Cha Mountain.

Why did Lo Jik care about the Tie Clan?

It was certainly not Tie Ruo Nan. He knew her arrival, yet he focused more on the Tie Clan's scouting ability. Feng Tian Yu's arrival meant a massive opportunity for Lo Jik. How could he look away from such glimmering treasure? Unlike Lo Jik, Feng Tian Yu had a mature Gu Set that was necessary for Gu Refinement. If the information on Feng Tian Yu wasn't false, he was known to have one crucial Rank 5 Gu—Five Fusions At Once Gu Worm.

Like the Five Tasks at Once, the Five Fusions At Once exhausted its potential during the Refinement of the Gu.

There was another thing.

Lo Jik desired more conflict.

He wished to disappear into the storm of war, be pronounced dead, and be left alone to wander the Central Continent at his desired pace. How could he achieve that if the Righteous Faction continued to control San Cha?

While Lo Jik had been a significant influence—directly and indirectly—on the Demonic Path's current plight, he did not plan to let the Righteous Faction enjoy the benefits. Only equality brewed chaos, and Lo Jik was nothing but an equality-loving opportunist. So, assassinating Feng Tian Yu achieved one objective but not the remaining.

Why would Lo Jik do something so foolish?

The shortsighted profits from Feng Tian Yu's assassination boasted the talented Gu Master's Gu Set except for the Vital Gu Worm. But was Lo Jik's objective just that?

He wished to learn Chen Jiu's method of Dual Cultivation. He needed to tread safely yet seek opportunities and experience appropriate risks. No, Lo Jik would never do something as foolish as killing Feng Tian Yu.

Instead, he would use Feng Tian Yu for his final appearance—to become so bright and brilliant, decorated with splendorous wings that would boost his and San Cha's inheritance's reputation. Only by being nearest to the source of light of glory could Lo Jik cast the widest shadow, leaving even the astute helpless in its darkness.

So, a shocking piece of news traveled throughout San Cha, electrifying others as the mere thought of the Little Giant King challenging the renowned 'Gu Refinement Grandmaster' made them speechless.

Gu Yue Lo Jik was a mindless brute who offended the Wu Clan for the known Pink Seductress. He also displayed his inept mindset by burning bridges with Li Xian, isolating himself in San Cha. Nobody wanted to involve themselves with the Little Giant King and Frost Devil duo after the latter killed one of the Tie Clan's elders, leading others to quickly kill the rest. All these Demonic Gu Masters had long fled the mountain, fearful of the Tie Clan's vengeance. Yet, the demonic duo remained.

So be it if Gu Yue Lo Jik challenged Feng Tian Yu to a fight. The latter was a Refinement Path Gu Master. How could he match Lo Jik's strength?

Feng Tian Yu's fists could not shatter boulders, and his body could not splinter through the forest, spearing a new path from sheer might!

But…

Gu Yue Lo Jik challenged Feng Tian Yu to refine a Gu Worm.

<<<>>>

'What is he thinking?' Hu Mei Er suppressed the surge of anxiousness, challenging her control as she stayed put. She had already decided to turn Gu Yue Lo Jik into her Vital Human. However, the necessary Killer Move could only be used during intense, intimate moments where the pleasure threatened precise control.

So, Hu Mei Er had to practice said Killer Move after using several Gu Worms to mimic the conditions one's body depicted during sexual intercourse. Her Grandmother advised her to take things a step further, making Hu Mei Er modify her residence in a way that it smelled of sex, its surroundings damp with lurid heat.

These few weeks had been more uncomfortable than the seductress cared to admit. She intended to master the Killer Move and eventually lay her claim on Lo Jik should he survive the Tie Clan's onslaught. That would be the best time since he would be weakened and injured. She would be able to manipulate his senses and brand his soul.

Hu Mei Er was confident that her earlier progress now offered no value. She had maintained her distance from Lo Jik since Bai Ning Bing killed one of the Tie Elders. It was bound to have displeased Lo Jik even if he was the one who asked her to stay away for her safety.

'But if everything goes right…' Hu Mei Er's breath hitched. She didn't feel guilty about anything. Being ruthless and demonic, wasn't it effortless for her to realize that everything would improve if she successfully refined Lo Jik into her Vital Human? Lo Jik would have no choice but to forgive and pamper her. He would have to abandon or kill that white-headed slut. And Hu Mei Er would raise her obsessed man into an Immortal once she ascended.

Who says Demonic Overlords cannot achieve their happy endings?

Their cultivation would soar.

Lo Jik had his Strength Path Inheritance, which would become a consistent source of growth for Hu Mei Er.

Her Illusion and Enchantment Path Inheritance shouldn't be any worse.

Their Gu Worms and Essence would join, and their Dao would mingle.

So, Hu Mei Er closed her eyes. She only needed to practice. Whether she achieved all that was unfortunately circumstantial. Yet, as they say, opportunity only becomes fortune for the prepared. Hu Mei Er wished to prepare for every possible circumstance.

<<<>>>

Everybody knew about Feng Tian Yu's nature. He was a Refinement Nut. His mortal enemies could plead for their lives by revealing a respectable attainment in the Refinement Path. His obsession knew no bounds.

So, when Lo Jik began explaining patiently, Feng Tian Yu's damp mood instantly brightened as if a dazzling sun emerged for his pleasure.

Hosting Feng Tian Yu, Yi Huo had to prepare for five individuals' temporary residence. As expected, Yi Huo would not publicly let his guest or the Purple Thorn Token holder exchange pointers.

Refinement was a delicate process that required the utmost patience and care. So, Yi Huo displayed his brilliant mindset by temporarily allying with Yi Jun Hie to use the latter's forces and create a safe perimeter for the competition.

The two Elders weren't daft. Why would Lo Jik suddenly challenge Feng Tian Yu?

They never forgot that the former entered King Xin's Inheritance before growing quieter and appearing less in public unless roused by Hu Mei Er.

The two Elders had their motives and wished to probe what Lo Jik obtained, which allowed him to challenge Feng Tian Yu.

The cave accommodated Yi Huo, Yi Jun Hie, Bai Ning Bing, Feng Tian Yu, and Gu Yue Lo Jik.

"Entering King Xin's Inheritance had been the best decision of my life," Lo Jik spoke with deceptive calmness as he sat cross-legged in the cave's center, a few feet from Feng Tian Yu. His loose appearance barely made Feng Tian Yu judge the Little Giant as he continued with an almost scholarly disposition.

"It is challenging to explain how I view the world. Yet, everyone inside the cave is a perceptive Gu Master, aware of Dao's abyss-like depths and what understanding its layer entails. I merely spoke the word—challenge. However, how can we refine a Gu in these conditions? Anyone can interrupt by attacking the cave. The two elders had been graceful enough to accommodate my willful intentions—it was all to discuss the Refinement Path with you, Feng Tian Yu."

Feng Tian Yu was a scholarly man with long black hair, flowing robes, and a handsome face. His eyes darted once he heard Lo Jik, and his smile deepened.

"No need to be so courteous, Little Giant King. Everyone at our level understands your Strength Path attainment. But your forthrightness opened my eyes. My heart leaps joyfully, conversing with another Gu Master who appreciates the Refinement Path. Whatever you gained from King Xin's Inheritance is yours to keep. Don't share its wonders with me. Let me seek them for myself. But if it's a discussion you want, it's a discussion you shall have."

His words made the two Elders slightly disappointed. Yet, Lo Jik laughed.

"Very well. Enough courtesies. We shall not share our coveted recipes but discuss our ideas for improving the well-known recipes. Let me start since I was audacious enough to cause such trouble. An inspiration plagued me a few weeks ago. I once refined the Rank 2 White Jade Gu in Gu Yue Clan before its destruction. Ah, I remember those days. The lush bamboo, the noisy crickets, and the scented blooms. I once caught a boar before awakening my aperture. Oh, Feng Tian Yu, it led me to a sudden inspiration! What do you think about adding a Boar King's tusk into the fused lump of White Boar and Jade Skin Gu? Would it not improve the recipe?"

Feng Tian Yu's gaze suddenly brightened.

"A Boar King's tusk… a tusk…"

He muttered, instantly falling into a daze.

"Brilliant!" Feng Tian Yu slapped his thigh. "The White Boar and the Boar's Tusk will resonate, improving the recipe. But the timing of using the tusk was utterly outstanding." His gaze gleamed. "Let's try it right now."

"Haha!" Lo Jik burst into laughter. "Very well. But I might not be able to perform well compared to you."

"Nonsense. All Paths are equal under the Grand Dao. Refinement Path always needed experts from other Paths to inspire recipes. How dare I, a meek junior, look down upon the heroes of this world when my experts showed me to be better?"

As such, the duo quickly produced materials. Feng Tian Yu only had the Jade Skin Gu. Meanwhile, Lo Jik had a Boar's Tusk. Yi Jun Hie called upon one of his men to retrieve a Rank 1 White Boar Gu.

Nobody would act without considering their interests. However, the successful emergence of this recipe allowed the two Elders to benefit moderately.

Feng Tian Yu soon began refining the Gu. His movements and skills were nothing short of artistic, a characteristic of a Master. Lo Jik knew he was better. Others may call Feng Tian Yu a Grandmaster, but his attainment wasn't in such a mystical realm. Soon, Feng Tian Yu successfully refined the Rank 2 White Jade Gu and handed it to Yi Jun Hie.

"Your assessment was proper." Feng Tian Yu grinned, unfazed despite refining a Gu. "The Boar Tusk's addition reduced the resistance of the fused lump by almost 20%! We can improve this recipe further by using the White-Furred Boar King's tusk since it is a material for—" Feng Tian Yu grew quiet once he noticed the flash of hesitation in Lo Jik's gaze.

"You disapprove?"

"I won't lie," Lo Jik began.

Bai Ning Bing already knew it.

'It means he will speak the most bald-faced lie before trying to get into your panties… tsk, but not into men's trousers.' Bai Ning Bing scoffed internally.

"I thought about the White-Furred Boar. However, isn't the Boar's species the Jade-Skinned Wolf's vicious enemy? The Jade-Skinned Wolf is used as a material for the Jade Skin Gu. The Dao follows nature; nature is the Dao. I suspected a negative effect and stopped thinking about the White Boar."

Feng Tian Yu furrowed his brow and nodded. "You're correct. However, you're assuming things on a surface level. As you said, nature is the Dao. The two beasts usually concentrate around the regions rich with white jade grass. Their conflict arises from the urge to sustain their lives and packs. Instead of just using the White Boar's tusk, we should also consider using the Jade Skin Wolf's teeth or nails alongside clumps of processed white jade grass."

"But that would unnecessarily raise its cost." Lo Jik countered.

Others would be sorely mistaken if they expected Feng Tian Yu to act reasonably and accept the rebuttal. However, the Refinement Nut was curious to see the topic through, providing consistent changes and possible improvements. They didn't ask for materials again as their discussion often turned into arguments, leading to Lo Jik's loss.

The remaining trio had their horizons broadened. They saw two individuals argue for hours over a Rank 2 Gu with a stable Gu Fusion Recipe, and worse, they heard the duo argue over one topic for hours.

Lo Jik and Feng Tian Yu continued talking over each other, appearing spirited and eager to compete in inspirations and wild ideas ranging from changing the recipe's materials, tweaking the process, and even using the time and weather conditions in the discussion.

Meanwhile, the three spectators grew frustrated and stressed.

Yi Huo and Yi Jun Hie wanted to know what Lo Jik obtained. By now, they knew Lo Jik's fortuitous encounter was nothing to scoff at. He wasn't a Refinement Path Master since his display was inferior to Feng Tian Yu. The duo also wished to know what recipes Lo Jik and Feng Tian Yu held since the former attained a Strength Path Ancient Inheritance and the latter was a Refinement Path Genius.

Yet, they couldn't achieve the latter objective.

As for Bai Ning Bing…

He did grow slightly more interested when Lo Jik momentarily steered the topic to one of the processes used to fuse the Rank 5 Frost Profound Zombie Gu. The white-haired demon realized Lo Jik intended to learn Feng Tian Yu's method of refining the Gu they planned to fuse.

After all, they only had one set of materials. How could they not act cautiously?

As expected, Feng Tian Yu had a few things to improve about Lo Jik's recipe.

Yet, Feng Tian Yu sighed with regret because he felt the sun set too soon!

"Sigh! How regretful!" Feng Tian Yu looked lost. He declared during Lo Jik's departure. "You are not a Refinement Path Master. So regretful. Truly a pity! You have an innate knack for the Refinement Path, Little Giant King. Your Strength Path Attainment makes me appear small and inept. Your ideas and inspirations regarding the few Strength Gu Worms taught me new things instead. Let's converge again during more pleasant times!"

His words were loud and clear as he announced to the world while personally seeing Lo Jik off. Lo Jik had similar words for Feng Tian Yu before he left, and the declaration left many sneaky Demonic Gu Masters shaken!

Feng Tian Yu had such high praises for Lo Jik?

What happened inside?

What did Lo Jik obtain from King Xin's Inheritance that allowed him to earn such praise?

"You're really sincere, huh," Bai Ning Bing sneered once they returned to their residence. "I expected you to waste my collected materials after paying a heavy price. You must have earned a lot."

"You know," Lo Jik smirked, indifferent to the Tsundere, limp-dicked asshole. "I'll fuck some gratitude into you once you recover your female form. Then, all you'll be trilling about would be—Thank you, dearest Little Giant~!"

Bai Ning Bing hissed, "Oh, please! I refuse to lower my standards and shag with you! Hmph, Loser. How about you bend over and let me show you the world? I might be the one to fuck some gratitude into you."

"With what?" Lo Jik laughed as he entered his privy, leaving Bai Ning Bings scowling.

<<<>>>

Bai Ning Bing misunderstood him.

Yes, Lo Jik wished to help him. That's why he accepted the task of refining the Rank 5 Zombie Gu. However, discreetly questioning Feng Tian Yu achieved another effect—it curtained Lo Jik from Bai Ning Bing's doubt. As a Refinement and Wisdom Path Master, Lo Jik already made minor adjustments to the recipe to improve the probability of success. Since he would refine in Bai Ning Bing's presence, Lo Jik couldn't utilize his rare Refinement Path Gu. Failing even once meant the loss of materials, which was unacceptable!

Bai Ning Bing's first and only reward allowed Lo Jik to learn about the Dreamer Gu. That Gu Worm changed Lo Jik's outlook on cultivation!

How can he not want more?

How could he not want Bai Ning Bing's everything?

So, Lo Jik planned to use Feng Tian Yu to ease Bai Ning Bing's doubt beforehand. He adjusted the recipe to lower the probability of failure. But how could the white-headed murder-hobo Tsundere understand that? He wasn't a Refinement Path Master. Yet, Feng Tian Yu's answers weren't far from Lo Jik's tweaks. Some of them were perhaps better, compelling Lo Jik to undergo another round of exhausting deductions. Now, Bai Ning Bing wouldn't openly suspect Lo Jik once he used the modified recipe or distract him with questions.

And didn't he earn those brownie points from Bai Ning Bing by questioning Feng Tian Yu about the recipe?

However, everything would be meaningless if they failed to refine the Gu Worm.

Thus, Lo Jik spent a few more days to ensure the recipe's processes before calling Bai Ning Bing and setting a minor perimeter.

"Frost Devil Gu is my vital Gu Worm," Bai Ning Bing spoke patiently. "We both would be occupied during the refinement. Are you sure we can trust him?"

Despite the formation around their residence, Lo Jik and Bai Ning Bing were present in another cave.

It was Li Xian's cave!

"Don't worry," Lo Jik inspected the interiors as if he hadn't already used the same spot to refine the Void Soul Gu and perform a risky Killer Move despite lacking appropriate materials.

"Li Xian needs something from me. He's been kind enough to do us a favor…"

Yet, Bai Ning Bing felt some bitterness from Lo Jik's tone.

'What did Li Xian take from him?' Bai Ning Bing frowned.

He shook his head, organizing his thoughts to suppress all distractions. The Gu Refinement's success was linked to his life. Bai Ning Bing didn't try exhausting his mind with doubt and that annoying self-reflection.

"Everything's assembled," Lo Jik's quiet remark snapped Bai Ning Bing from his thoughts as the former glanced at him with a short smirk. "Let's succeed in refining that Gu Worm."

<<<>>>

Shang Liang Mountain, the Shang Clan.

A tall, lanky, purple-haired man moved through the crowded outer city, barely attracting attention. The Outer City was a bustling hub of merchants with every sort of material readily available in one spot. Gu Masters moved around, vendors called for their goods, and some mortal families begged for scraps, forced into such a helpless state by their competitors—the lanky mortal witnessed several sights before returning to his inn.

'My preparations are complete,' the man momentarily closed his eyes. This new world ingrained the discipline of revising every plot and scheme. His shitty master didn't do his body and mind any favors by forcing him through those hellish training.

Whoever loved the anime training montage should have a Rank 7 Gu Immortal whip their bodies till the skin peeled off the flesh in precise threads! Indeed, most of the 'youth's' so-called training arc had been to increase his pain tolerance since that used to be his weakest link.

Not anymore.

Now, his weakness was being a masochist.

So… his master failed the mission successfully.

The individual soon sat inside a Gu Formation.

'As suspected, the Shang Clan is proud of their creations and maintains their primitive defenses… no, I'm letting my ego get the better of me. Phantom Path has remained mysterious since the Immemorial Era. Although it isn't like the exceptionally premium paths like the Theft Path, the Phantom Path isn't encountered in ordinary times. It's in the same class as Wisdom Path regarding the rarity.'

Gu Formation brightened into life as the 'mortal' could surprisingly activate it despite showing no signs of the Primeval Essence's aura around his body.

The formation created a shadowy lump of light around the youth before his body flickered and turned translucent. Strangely, the entire Shang Liang Mountain suddenly trembled.

*Drrr*

It began with a soft shudder.

Its occupants felt the tremor but paid it no heed. The Shang Clan sported several battles daily within the Inner Cities through the Battle Stages. A few battles could occasionally turn intense.

*Drrrrrrr*

The Mountain's carefully designed internal structure experienced similar tremors as the outer surface's tremble grew intense!

A red light suddenly burst apart and condensed into blood-red flames, revealing the appearance of a handsome, red-haired man who instantly struck an unassuming building, shocking everyone!

*Bang*

*DRRRRRRRRRRR*

Gu Houses trembled as many buildings began collapsing once the mountain experienced a shocking earthquake!

It had to be known that the Immortals modified the Mountain, ensuring defenses against such natural forces. The Mountain hadn't experienced an Earthquake in 500 years!

Fortunately, the Earthquake did not last long. Despite its destruction, it ended after a few seconds.

However, the gloomy Shang Yan Fei's expression changed again as he disappeared into blood-red flames, appearing in a dim hall that led to a massive natural cave with stone stairs leading to a humongous earthen gate!

The earthen gate possessed a human's face protruding from the surface.

"Boo hoo! Little Fei Fei!" A loud voice emerged from the gate as it surprisingly cried. Each teardrop became distinctly rare or extinct material that would spiral the mortal world into craziness. "Somebody stole my innocence! How can I ever show my face to other Living Treasure Doors?!"

The face sobbed loudly as the cave shook.

"He penetrated my insides so hard and took so many precious things. Fei Fei!"

Shang Yan Fei's eyes twitched as fury bubbled in his blood-red eyes!

Somebody stole from the Shang Clan?!

However, Shang Yan Fei's day wasn't going to become easier.

*Spurt*

The Shang Clan Leader's expression twisted with pain as he suddenly coughed a mouthful of blood.

"Ah!" Even the Living Treasure Door screamed. "Somebody attacked the Clan's Formation! Oh, no! There are so many injured Gu!"

<<<>>>

Mi Zhu Blessed Land.

A blessed land is a Gu Immortal's residence separate from the real world. Each Blessed Land is unique, enjoying distinct weather conditions and temporal compressions. The Mi Zhu Blessed had an ethereal pink sky with silken ground growing lush trees, wavy grass, tender flowers, and so much more!

From a bird's point of view, one would observe four mountains—three forming a triangular perimeter and the tallest mountain in the center of the Blessed Land and the triangle.

On the mountain's peak stood a luxurious fortress boasting splendor and security. Its gleaming, marbled surface and crystalline roof appeared very enchanting.

Several women were inside the palace, casting worried glances to the sky as swift gales were currently striking the entire Blessed Land.

One of the women, evidently more well-received than others, tightly gripped the railings. She watched with fear and pride.

'My son,' she prayed. 'Surpass the tribulation. You are meant for the stars… we're meant for the stars.'

Hope intensified in her heart as she watched Shang Mi Zhu contend against the fierce gales. An Immortal's might was worthy of awe as the prepared Immortal, despite some losses, held an upper hand!

But fate was fickle and mysterious, yet it was set in stone.

What could not be predicted was often the following incident.

*Spurt*

It was a moment of distraction. Shang Mi Zhu felt tens of his Gu Worms inside the Clan's Formation perish. However, the distraction suddenly interrupted his Killer Move because his mind was already exhausted.

His body sagged midair, instantly surrounded by the tremendous Emotional Gales.

Emotional Gales were dangerous and troubling. Each movement intensified Shang Mi Zhu's obsessions. What he once prioritized at the bottom suddenly became his most urgent desire!

"No!"

Countless women in the palace screamed with terror and despair as they watched the gales consume Shang Mi Zhu…

And spit him out.

"Eh? Hurry! Save my son!" Shang Mi Zhu's mother screamed as the winds dissipated, assimilating with the Blessed Land.

<<<>>>

Where there were failures, there were also successes.

"Eh?"

Sporting a half-frozen hand, a bleeding nose, and bloodshot eyes, Lo Jik watched the lump of greyish-blue light condense into a Gu Worm that released a weak Rank 5 Aura.

"We… succeeded?" Bai Ning Bing watched the Gu Worm approach him.

"We… did…" Lo Jik stared at the Gu Worm before glancing at Bai Ning Bing. When did refining a Rank 5 Gu become so effortless?

Disregarding his haggard and injured appearance, Lo Jik faced no resistance during the entire process. It was indeed mentally exhausting… but it was nothing like failing a few steps a few times, as he did during the refinement of the Void Soul Gu.

"Pft! Hahahahaha!" Bai Ning Bing broke into a fit of boisterous laughter. Yet, Lo Jik couldn't share the same enthusiasm. He was tired and…

He felt wrong…

Worry bubbled in his gut, and Lo Jik couldn't shake the feeling that something had gone terribly wrong despite his recent success and smoothly executed plans.
