Chapter 45: The Amnesia Invasion
The wind carried silence.
No birds. No insects. Not even footsteps.
Just silence… and the slow creep of a pale, silver fog.
It slithered between trees. It kissed doorways. And as it passed, it stole.
Not gold. Not blood. But memory.
Ruoxi woke up screaming.
Or rather, she thought she screamed. Her throat felt empty. Her mind, too.
Yue Lian sat beside her, frowning.
"Where are we?"
Ruoxi looked around. A small house. A fire pit. A familiar sword resting against the wall.
"I… don't know."
Yue Lian stood, hand trembling. "Who are you?"
The door creaked open.
Lin Feng stepped inside.
But they didn't recognize him.
Lin Feng froze.
"Ruoxi. Yue Lian. It's me."
Yue Lian drew her blade instinctively. "Stay back."
Ruoxi clutched her head. "I know that name. Lin Feng. But… I don't know your face."
Lin Feng's heart dropped. "No… the fog got you, too."
He stepped closer. "You trained with me. Bled with me. We saved each other dozens of times."
Ruoxi shook her head slowly. "That sounds like a beautiful lie."
He reached for her hand.
And she didn't pull away.
Just whispered, "Prove it."
The silver fog is called Nullmist, an ancient relic from the Forgotten Era.
It doesn't just erase memories. It erases connections.
Friendships. Vows. Enmities. Love.
Entire kingdoms collapsed when rulers forgot they were at war. Lovers became strangers.
And now, it creeps toward the last bastion of resistance: Lin Feng's heart.
They traveled to the nearest town.
No names. No signs. No recognition.
A child asked, "Mama, what's my name again?"
The mother cried. "I don't know. I knew it yesterday."
Ruoxi shivered. "This is horrifying."
Yue Lian squinted at a cracked statue.
"It says… 'In honor of… Lin... Fen?'"
Lin Feng stepped forward.
"It was me."
He turned to them.
"I need your help. I can fix this."
Ruoxi hesitated. "Then start by fixing us."
They found the Archive of Forgotten Bonds, an ancient ruin where echoes of lost connections drift like wind chimes.
To restore Ruoxi and Yue Lian's memories, Lin Feng had to walk through three chambers:
The Chamber of First Meetings
The Chamber of Shared Pain
The Chamber of Final Promises
Each one demanded proof. Not knowledge. But emotion.
Inside the first chamber, fog took the shape of a training ground.
A young Ruoxi stood there, skeptical.
"You'll never keep up with me," she said.
Lin Feng smiled sadly. "You were wrong."
He mimicked her stance. "You said that the first time we sparred. Then you tripped."
The illusion blinked.
Ruoxi blinked, too.
"I… remember that bruise."
Light formed in her chest.
One bond restored.
The second chamber became a battlefield.
Yue Lian knelt beside a wounded Lin Feng.
"I told you not to shield me," she whispered in memory.
Present Yue Lian gasped. "I… said that?"
Lin Feng stepped into the illusion. "And I told you it was worth it. I'd do it again."
He touched the wound.
Yue Lian clutched her side. "I feel it. The burn. The fear."
A glow ignited in her heart.
Second bond restored.
The third chamber was a graveyard.
It held no bodies. Only oaths.
Echoes of the promises they'd made.
Ruoxi's voice: "If I fall, you carry the fire."
Yue Lian's whisper: "If you forget me, I'll remind you."
Lin Feng's vow: "If the world turns to mist, I'll write your names into the stars."
The fog screamed.
And shattered.
Memories flooded back.
Ruoxi cried. "Lin Feng…"
Yue Lian laughed. "I hate forgetting."
He hugged them both.
"Welcome back."
But the fog wasn't finished.
It surged into a humanoid shape.
A woman with no eyes. No mouth. Just a swirling face of shifting names.
"I am Mnemosyne," she hissed. "You reclaim memories. I devour them."
"You destroy identity," Lin Feng growled.
"I liberate it," she said. "From pain. From burden. From bonds."
Mnemosyne cast: Forget-Me-Not Tempest – waves of silver fog that erased relationships mid-fight.
Ruoxi shouted: "She's trying to separate us again!"
Yue Lian planted her feet. "Then we fight closer!"
Lin Feng invoked: Void Law – Memory Lockdown!
Ruoxi and Yue Lian responded: Flame of Remembering Wind of Oaths Rebound
The trio moved in perfect sync.
Mnemosyne roared.
"You trap yourselves in memory!"
Lin Feng replied:
"We don't trap ourselves."
"We define ourselves."
Mnemosyne tried one last attack:
She stole their names.
They staggered.
Lin Feng blinked. "Who… am I?"
Ruoxi whimpered. "I… don't want to forget."
But Yue Lian grinned.
"I don't need my name to know who I am."
She placed a hand on Ruoxi's shoulder.
"We are bonds. We are stories. We are real."
Lin Feng roared:
Void Law – True Name Resurgence!
Their names returned.
And Mnemosyne shattered.
Villages remembered.
Children ran into their mothers' arms.
Couples kissed like it was their first and last.
Ruoxi whispered, "I was scared to forget you."
Yue Lian smiled. "Next time, I'm writing your name on my blade."
Lin Feng gazed at the stars.
"From now on, we live so brightly, forgetting won't stand a chance."
To be continue...
