RETURN OF THE MORTAL MAN

Chapter 4: MORGTAR

[YAKUT ÖZÜMSENDİ]

I pulled the sword out of the fenharin's head. My clothes began to tear after being clawed many times. This was the fifth fenharin I had killed. There are many of them nearby, and these were a few that had separated from the herd. Encountering the herd would only bring me death. The cave was very large. I had been walking for hours and still hadn't found an exit. There was a high probability that this was a fenharin's lair, and I needed to leave immediately.

[7:00 p.m.]

Five hours had already passed, and I hadn't achieved any good results. The fenharins I killed had risen and had four yakutas. Even if this helps me a little, I need to find a skill. Even if my sword technique is good, it's useless to me right now.

Jin continued to move forward in the wide, dark cave. He took out a few snacks from his dimensional bag and put them in his mouth. He continued walking. He saw a light illuminating the darkness in the direction he was going. He began to move cautiously toward the target. He gripped his sword tightly with both hands.

He was only five steps away from the source of the light. He had already put his own lantern back into his dimensional bag. Drawing too much attention could be deadly. He took slow steps toward the light and saw its source.

A person in torn clothes was sitting next to the fire.

His eyes were colorless. His skin was jet black. A single thought crossed Jin's mind. Run as fast as you can. Just run. As Jin turned to run away, he heard a calm and steady voice.

"Stop."

It was a soft voice, but Jin heard it clearly. He was very powerful. Only these thoughts crossed Jin's mind. He gripped his sword tightly and looked at the strange man. He felt no magic or power from him, but who could be so at ease in such a world? The only answer was that he was very powerful. Powerful enough to fear nothing.

Young man, come and sit in front of me."

Jin became even more anxious after hearing these words. If he was not human, it meant that he had awakened a monster. Jin slowly walked over and sat down in front of the strange man. He began to study him. The only thing he could understand was that the man was strange and terrifying, but he stopped worrying because if his opponent was overly powerful, worrying would be pointless. He felt a little more relaxed and took out some food from his dimensional bag and began to eat. He had just eaten, but he was hungry again. The strange man looked at Jin and smiled.

"Hahahaha, son, you're a little strange."

"Said the strange man who lived on the planet Morvak."

After Jin's words, the strange man began to laugh.

"I wonder how and why you came here. Would you like to share that with a curious man like me, son?"

Jin examined the man in front of him and looked at him with a smirk.

"You know, at first I was afraid of you, but now I'm not. If your intention was to kill me, you would have done it already. Isn't it gentlemanly to introduce yourself before asking someone a question?"

"You're right, I'm sorry I was a little rude. I am MORGTAR NIGHTFALL. Now it's your turn to introduce yourself, son."

Jin looked at the man in front of him in astonishment. He recognized him. Who didn't know Morgtar? The first immortal and humanity's strongest warrior. No one knew his full power, and he was very mysterious. Only two people knew him personally. Jin couldn't speak for a few seconds.

Morgtar looked at the mysterious man in front of him and laughed.

"Hahaha, since you recognize me, you must be from the human world. Now explain to me how and why you came here."

Jin tried to compose himself but failed because the second person he wanted to save was sitting in front of him. In his previous memories, Morgtar mysteriously disappeared, and a year later, the elders' council confirmed Morgtar's death. This was the greatest blow to the human world. Even the destruction of cities seemed like a minor issue after this news.

"Huh... huh..."

Jin took a deep breath, composed himself, and continued speaking.

"Sir, even if I wanted to answer, I think it should be mutual. My answer in exchange for a question."

Morgtar laughed and shook his head.

"Alright, first question: how did you get here?"

Jin composed himself and began speaking.

"I wanted to go outside the city to grow stronger. Staying inside would only keep me weak. So I decided to leave the city secretly through the underground tunnels. I found a blue portal in the tunnel and entered it. Then I found myself here. I didn't recognize this place. So I looked around cautiously and encountered monsters on the way, and realized this place wasn't for humans. Does that answer your question?"

Morgtar looked at Jin thoughtfully.

"Even if it's a lie, it's not entirely false. It's an acceptable answer. You can ask your question."

Jin focused and spoke carefully.

"Sir, where is this place?"

"I know you know the answer to that question. Don't test me, son."

"No, the only thing I know is that this is the Morvak planet. I don't know where I am. I have to learn to survive."

Morgtar placed his hand on his chin and began to think.

"We are under the ruined castle. This place is a dungeon and has been invaded by Morvaks. It's a bit surprising that you're still alive. Generally, there are herds of Fenharin in the area, and the leader of the herd is in the throne room. I don't recommend you go there."

Jin shook his head. Morgtar's voice rang out again.

"Are you sure you can survive here?"

Jin looked at Morgtar.

"I came here to grow stronger and gambled my life away. If I die, it just means I lost the gamble."

Morgtar let out a deep laugh. Though he didn't appear to have a throat, his voice sounded human.

"I like you, son."

Jin scratched his head and spoke without looking at Morgtar.

"Sir, um... may I ask why you look like this?"

Morgtar stopped laughing and looked at Jin with his completely black eyes.

"It's just a side effect of my ability. It'll heal in a few hours. Want to try something fun?"

Jin asked, confused.

"Fun?"

"Yes. I heard you're here to get stronger. I like this castle. I want to claim it as my own. What do you say? Would you like to get stronger by cutting up little creatures?"

****

I was surprised and delighted by Morgtar's offer. He is the strongest person, and being by his side would increase my safety and adaptability to the environment. This is an opportunity. I immediately replied in a loud voice,

"YES. I want to."

Morgtar looked at me and smiled again.

"You're fun and smart, but sending you like this would kill you. Hmm... wait, let me see what I can do."

Morgtar reached out his hand, but it vanished midway. I stared at Morgtar in disbelief.

"B-... this dimensional space!"

Morgtar glanced at me.

"Yes. It's a feature that comes with this level. It's a bit surprising that you know about it because there are only five immortals, and we haven't told anyone else about it yet."

Morgtar looked at me, raised his lips, and showed a terrifying smile.

"My friend has too many secrets. Don't worry, I won't ask. But if I sense any ill intent in your purpose, I'll kill you without a second thought."

I spoke nervously, sweat trickling down my face.

"I have no ill intent."

I don't know Morgtar, and I don't know what he's capable of. If I step on the wrong foot, he could blow my head off. I already look suspicious. All he has to do is think about killing me.

[18:38]

Damn it. I have more time, and I have to survive for 18 hours.

"Fine. Take these."

Morgtar threw me a dimensional bag and started talking.

"There are 100 low-level rubies and one skill inside. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm just lending them to you."

I looked at Morgtar in astonishment. 100 Yakuts. 100 Yakuts. I took out the Yakuts one by one and began to absorb them.

I can feel this... this increase in power. I stood up and looked at my body. I sent a little of the essence to my sword and touched my forehead. There were five colored rubies. I had grown much stronger in just 30 minutes. I broke the skill stone.

I felt a new power awakening within me. I was at the peak. To advance to the next level, I only needed a little more Ruby and had to pass the cinema. The system assigns a mission to every person about to advance to the next level. If you succeed, you advance to the next level. If you fail, your level remains the same forever. That's why people make many preparations for the final level. In my previous life, I had never risen so quickly. I looked at Morgtar and bowed in respect.

"I thank you very much. I will definitely repay you for this."

Morgtar waved his hand and stood up.

"Don't worry. You'll have plenty of time to repay me. If you're ready, let's go."

I began to follow Morgtar.

I took the lantern out of my bag and lit it with mana. Morgtar did not produce any light source. He definitely did not need it. He was a very strange person. No sound came from him. Even though he was walking, no sound came from him. I was far away from him. Morgtar's age was unknown, but it was said that he had survived the first disaster. With superpowers, his lifespan increased and aging slowed significantly. I followed him, keeping pace with him.

I hadn't noticed it before because I didn't dare look at him, but now that I looked, his body was covered in wounds. The thought of an opponent who could push him so hard was terrifying, and the idea of Morgtar defeating such an opponent was even more terrifying.

"Hrrrrrrr..."

I looked toward the source of the sound. It was a fenharin. There were three black rubies on its forehead. I heard Morgtar's voice.

"Do you want to test your new power?"

I nodded and drew my sword, charging toward the fenharin.

[SKILL ACTIVATED]

When it vanished suddenly, the monster looked at me in shock. I appeared behind it and thrust my sword vertically into the fenharin. The sword cut through without any resistance, making a 'SHLRRK' sound. The fenharin was dead. It was too easy. I grew suspicious and approached the fenharin cautiously. Morgtar confirmed from where he was that the fenharin was dead. The opponent I had struggled with just a few hours ago was now defeated in a single move. This is great. I feel stronger. I removed the fuel from Fenharin, put it in my bag, and returned to Morgtar's side. Morgtar continued walking without saying a word. I hurried to catch up with him. I ran. Even though he seemed to be walking slowly, he was actually very fast. Finally, I caught up with him and started walking beside him.
