Chapter 39: Chapter 38: Dark Mages Attack End
Aiden observed from the shadows, his eyes fixed on Mira as she clashed with the Earth based Archmage whom he recognised as Orlan Thorne, the brother to the Ice based Archmage he had just killed.
He could feel the tension in the air as the high-speed exchange of power between them was almost tangible.
This was a rare chance to witness Mira's combat capabilities at their peak, especially with the infusion of spiritual energy she had been practicing.
Mira's mana spiraled around her like vines, and with each step she took, the ground beneath her feet seemed to bloom with green, roots and leaves springing to life in her wake.
As she moved, wooden projectiles were shot towards Orlan, who raised his hands, and summoned a massive rock barrier that rose from the ground, surrounding him. "Is that all you've got?" he called out, his voice dripping with arrogance.
The rock barrier was his best defensive technique [Titanic Shield] and he was confident in its durability.
The [Titanic Shield] shimmered as the wood shards from Mira's attacks bounced harmlessly off of it. He could feel her energy, but it wasn't quite the same, there was a force behind it, something otherworldly which he couldn't place his finger on.
Mira grinned, her eyes narrowing in focus. "I've got something better than your stupid rocks." She said as spiritual energy surged around her, wrapping itself around her body, creating a shimmering barrier that expanded several meters beyond her.
The air around her hummed, the energy pure and almost suffocating and in a split second, she was gone, the space between them vanishing as she used her enhanced speed to close the gap.
Orlan's eyes widened just before Mira's roots shot out from the ground, aiming straight for his ankles, intent on binding him. He staggered back, but it was too late as she was already upon him.
With incredible precision, Mira slashed through his Titanic Shield with a whip-like vine, cutting it like a hot knife through butter. "Thought you could hide behind that all day, huh?" she teased as she passed through his now crumbled defense effortlessly.
Orlan growled and stomped his foot, sending seismic shockwaves through the ground. The earth cracked open beneath Mira, and earth spikes shot toward her in an attempt to overwhelm her speed.
But Mira was faster. The moment the wave started, she was already changing her movement pattern as she side stepped, her body blurring as she used the roots around her to launch herself into the air.
"Tch, is that the best you've got? Jaxon would have put up a more interesting fight." she taunted, spinning around mid-air, sending a wave of spiritual energy that sent a blossoming vine straight for his head.
He raised his hand to summon his [Titanic Shield] again, but it was slow. The vine wrapped around his neck before he could even react, pulling him forward and slamming him into the ground. "You're too cocky, Orlan," Mira smirked as she landed gracefully, planting her feet firmly.
Orlan grunted and cast [Earthbound Well] summoning a localized gravitational force where everything was pulled downward.
The technique rippled through the air as he tried to crush Mira with the sudden increase in pressure, but her spiritual barrier held strong, the magic surrounding her more impermeable than any shield he had encountered. "You can't even touch me with that," Mira quipped, watching his frustration build.
And as if to add insult to his injury, Mira waved her hand and the vine tied around his neck dissolved, giving the dark mage another chance to attack.
Orlan's expression turned vicious. [Earthbound Well] was an ability that manipulates gravity around him to either crush enemies under intense pressure or to send them flying with less control.
"You'll regret this, Wood Mage. [Stonefist Strike!]" he growled and threw a punch that cut through the air. This was a technique imbued with the density of stone, able to create tremors in the ground and cause localized destruction.
This fist was aimed at Mira's midsection, but she was already gone before the fist could reach, her roots allowing her to swing around him like a ghost.
The fight became a blur of rapid exchanges, every strike, every wave of energy, and every taunt leaving the battlefield even faster than the last.
Orlan's Earth techniques were strong, but Mira's speed and adaptability made him look slow and predictable.
Mira came in again with another vineslash but Orlan was prepared and summoned his defensive technique. Mira's eyes glittered as she took the chance to slice through his Titanic Shield one more time.
This time, the shield cracked and splintered as the power of her attack surged through his barrier and reached Orlan, rattling him to his bones and causing him to stagger and barely holding onto his footing.
"You're starting to annoy me," he growled, raising his hands once more, but before he could call forth another spell, Mira clicked her tongue in disappointment and shot a vine that wrapped around his throat once more, pulling him to the ground with brutal force.
The Earth Archmage was forced onto his knees, his mana zone flickering weakly as he struggled against the roots tightening around him.
Mira stood over him, eyes sharp. "Told you, Orlan. Wood beats stone every time." She gave him a smug smile before releasing the pressure around his neck, leaving him to catch his breath.
Aiden watched, impressed by her speed and control. He could feel her spiritual energy practically radiating from her, giving her not only enhanced physical abilities but Magic skills.
This was the true strength of the Spirit Magic he had envisioned.
As Orlan groaned beneath her, Mira turned her head, meeting Aiden's eyes for a brief moment. Her smirk widened. "Want to join the fun, or are you just going to watch?"
Aiden chuckled softly, and dispelled the invisibility spell he cast on himself. "I'm surprised you managed to notice me." He wasn't. He knew that with Spirit Energy, her perception was already on par, if not greater than his.
"Hah, I noticed you as soon as you took a turn into this hallway." Mira scoffed and turned to the area Finn and Jaxon were making short work of the other mages. "I take it you took care of the rest?"
"Hmm? Ah, yes. A few Archmages thought themselves powerful or something. They've been sent to a better place." Aiden said carelessly and walked towards the gasping Orlan. "What do you I should do with you?"
Orlan looked at him with an intense gaze filled with rage. "What have you done to my sister?"
"Hmm? They attacked aiming for my life, what do you think happened to her considering that I am here?"
Orlan's face twisted with rage and grief, his clenched fists trembling as he tried to summon mana. But the oppressive aura of Aiden's presence crushed any attempt at resistance.
"You monster!" Orlan spat, his voice hoarse but unwavering. "She was just doing her duty. She didn't deserve to die like that."
Aiden crouched to meet Orlan's eyes, his expression cold. "Duty?" he said, his tone laced with disdain. "Your 'duty' involved attacking innocent people and threatening my friends. You're lucky I didn't treat you the same way I treated her."
Mira, standing a few paces away, crossed her arms and tilted her head. "You're wasting your breath, Aiden. He's not going to give you anything useful."
"Perhaps," Aiden replied, his gaze never leaving Orlan. "But sometimes, I like to hear them grovel."
Orlan's eyes burned with hatred. "You'll regret this. The Dark Order will avenge us. You think you've won, but we're just the beginning. Your kingdom will burn, your people will suffer, and you will beg for mercy."
Aiden sighed, almost bored, and rose to his full height. "I expected something more original. Threats about the world ending, kingdoms falling, yadda yadda." He turned to Mira. "What do you think? Should I keep him around for entertainment or—"
Mira waved a hand dismissively. "We don't have time for his nonsense. If he's going to be a nuisance, deal with him. Otherwise, let's move on."
Aiden smirked. "Fair enough." He extended his hand, spatial energy crackling around it. Orlan's eyes widened in fear as he tried to crawl backward, but the space around him warped, freezing him in place.
"Goodbye, Orlan," Aiden said softly. With a subtle twist of his fingers, Orlan was enveloped in a void of distorted space, his screams echoing for only a moment before fading into silence.
Mira shook her head. "You really enjoy the dramatics, don't you?"
Aiden turned to her, a sly grin on his face. "What can I say? I aim to please."
"Let's regroup with Finn and Jaxon," Mira said, her tone more serious now. "We need to secure the area before more of these fanatics show up."
"Agreed." Aiden's expression grew steely again as he followed her. "This isn't over. The Dark Order's persistence is a problem we'll need to crush completely."
The two walked off together, leaving the eerie silence of the hallway behind them.
Meanwhile, Aiden was pleased that Mira was more than capable on her own, and this display only confirmed what he had already suspected. She was a force to be reckoned with.
