Chapter 1756: A Chat About Gods And Heroes
-----
Aquarina was surprised at just how many reactions she received from everyone after she gained a second divine blessing. It wasn't something she had imagined, especially since the blessing wasn't exactly new. It was already within her this entire time. What Sylphy did was mostly just "upgrade it" using her new small divinity, which could barely be called one.
Aquarina imagined that perhaps because Sylphy's divinity was so small, that was why her new title wasn't exactly "goddess." Although the system referred to her as a goddess, her true title was "Heroic Divinity." This meant that right now, Sylphy might be the weakest goddess ever.
But even as the weakest, just being a goddess was already impressive. Aquarina couldn't quite imagine what Sylphy might be going through. But if her father and master had eyes as sharp as hers, then perhaps they already knew to some extent the changes she had undergone.
Unless, through some unseen method, the System could hide this power from them to keep it a secret for Sylphy and the rest. If that were the case, Aquarina would be the only one to know the truth.
Nonetheless, it wasn't just her parents and the chief who made a fuss. Her friends, the spirits, and even the villagers, once the chief shared the news, reacted strongly. The revelation that one of the heroes was chosen as a Saintess in this very oasis would likely make them think it was a sacred area.
"So you're now not just a Hero but a Saintess, Aquarina?" Silvia wondered, eating a big sandwich with Sky Eel meat and sweet and spicy sauce, quite a hearty meal for breakfast, but one the Everstonians ate happily. "That's pretty cool! How does it feel? Does it make you feel special or different? Wait, can you do saintly stuff? You don't look all that different to me yet!"
"It's not like I'll suddenly become a blonde, clear-skinned girl with a frail body wearing white and golden clothes and holding a staff like the stereotypical Saintess or something, you know?" Aquarina facepalmed. "Also, that image is very wrong. Even Lara and Sylphy's mother are… Hmm. Well, they're quite similar, I guess. Big, muscular Saints must be rare."
"Well, the image of the Saintess originates from the Original Saintess, who, alongside the Original Hero, was a Divine Being created by the Gods long ago to fight and defeat the Original Demon King," Shade explained as he sipped herbal tea. "That's where the stereotypes come from. Both heroes were light-skinned with long blonde hair. The hero was handsome with blue eyes, usually wearing clear blue, white, and golden armor, always carrying a small golden shield with wings and a divine blade."
"If the Gods created them, then doesn't that mean they're not like us?" Silvia wondered, as talkative as usual.
"Hmm, we can't really say… I mean, the Gods also made us, right?" Nepheline asked. "It's an old tale, though, not like we were ever there… Who knows what they really were? But from what we've learned and investigated, the gods created us in their image to an extent, but also allowed us to roam freely, reproduce, and all of that. You're usually born from your mama as a baby, right? Like this baby here."
Nepheline caressed the little cheeks of Esmeralda, who was still drinking her milk without stopping. The baby was very hungry, it seemed. Her little hands squeezed her mother's breasts strongly, making the boys present feel slightly embarrassed as they tried not to look.
As a member of a tribe that didn't ostracize nudity, mothers breastfeeding their children wasn't seen as bad or weird. In most tribes where Amazonians lived, including the Everstonians, mothers would walk around bare-breasted while feeding their children without any embarrassment.
Still, for teenagers like Justicio and Quetzalcoatl (who wasn't technically a teenager), it was still surprising, as they had little experience with women at the moment.
"Y-Yeah…" Justicio was as red as a tomato, looking down to avoid seeing Nepheline's beautiful breasts. Her husband was right there, after all, so he'd better behave.
"Then that means that the Gods who created the Original Hero and Saintess made them… well, not exactly like us," Nepheline said. "Nobody is born already fully grown and intelligent. They probably were some other type of being… not completely human."
"I wonder what happened to them after the battle against the Original Demon King…" Quetzalcoatl said. "I had no idea of any of these things… My tribe was very ignorant about the past of our world. I suppose that's on us for never being curious enough."
"Your tribe was surviving, Quetz. I don't think you should blame yourself for not knowing these things," Agua said. "Those were different times, right? The world has apparently changed a lot from the past. Countries are working together much better than before, for example. And great kingdoms are also trying to slowly unify the world even more over time, like the Elven Kingdom, right?"
"Agua… Well, thanks for your kind words," Quetz smiled gently.
"Yes, the Elven Kingdom is working toward a unified world, but I don't know if it'll be that easy," Nepheline sighed.
"Well, whatever the case, congratulations on being chosen again, Aquarina," Shade said. "Though… I often wished the Gods would leave us alone. Even if they've blessed you, don't obey them mindlessly or blindly, alright? You can oppose their orders and words. Despite their blessings, gods cannot simply control us and can only tempt us or manipulate us through divine revelations or gifts."
"It's mostly the church of the gods that likes controlling the heroes…" Nepheline said. "Those bastards think it's their right to control us, and they see us as weapons of war. Good thing we escaped from that continent… Although some of us have returned for inheritances, they're doing it sneakily. As long as they don't visit big cities, they should be alright."
"You must have gone through a lot, heroes, you have my condolences, we had no idea heroes were being manipulated by the Church of the Gods like that…" Said the chief, Aguarapida, as she caressed her daughter's head.
