Volume 3 Chapter 11
“Anna sister!”
Lili, holding my hand, suddenly exclaimed in surprise.
Lady Chris and I simultaneously looked towards the courtyard, where Enrique was unpacking one of the horse-drawn carriages.
“A lion?!”
Lady Chris was also shocked, a jade lion, carved to look lifelike under the sun’s rays.
It must have cost a fortune to create, no wonder Lili was surprised. She probably had only seen such masterpieces outside the Reunion Castle.
“Good morning, Lady Christiana, ready to depart?”
“Don’t mind if I accompany Anna for a bit? Staying in Ende has become somewhat tedious.”
Lady Chris temporarily handed over the task of issuing missions to a nearby official. Players who accepted missions need not worry about not finding the mission issuer.
“Why not? It’s my great fortune to travel with such a beautiful person as Lady Christiana. Sadly, there’s no carriage here worthy of you.”
“It’s okay, I can ride a horse.”
Lady Chris circled the jade lion. None of the other cargo boxes were unpacked, so Enrique’s intention was obviously to use the jade lion as our cover.
“The compartment below, I don’t think it can hide Anna, right?”
Lady Chris’s concern was not unfounded. I also felt that a certain overly ample area of mine simply couldn’t fit into the small compartment under the lion.
The wood panel under the lion was fixed, with a noticeable small space. To see it, the panel covering the lion needed to be completely removed.
Considering the lion’s value, the guards wouldn’t dare be rough with it, indeed making it an excellent cover.
Having a large chest has its own troubles…
Currently, Lili and I are both wanted in the Duke’s territory, so I must hide with Lili and temporarily leave Obey. After Enrique completes the handover, I will accompany him to other bases of Water City Commerce in the Mikhail Kingdom. That was the planned arrangement.
Enrique chuckled.
“What are you laughing at?”
“Lady Christiana is mistaken. That compartment isn’t the reserved space for them.”
“Then… where are they supposed to hide?”
Enrique climbed onto the platform, tapped on the jade lion, and the sound was clearly abnormal.
“Could it be hollow?”
Enrique smiled and nodded, and Lady Chris’s unexpected expression amused him.
“Have you ever heard of the legend of the Golden Apples of Arcadia?”
“You mean… the goddesses of Arcadia’s faith fought over the allocation of the golden apples, leading to their wrath upon the prince who decided the ownership of the apples?”
“The Mikhail Kingdom’s maids are also familiar with Arcadia’s legends? Exactly. The goddesses who didn’t receive the golden apples induced mortals to form an alliance and attack the prince’s country. However, the prince’s city-state was impenetrable. Even with the help of the gods, they couldn’t breach it and gradually weakened due to supply issues. But then, a hero in the alliance devised a strategy. They pretended to retreat. The prince’s country took the bait, leaving the city to engage the enemy, scattering the alliance and capturing many spoils of war.”
Enrique’s hand rested on the body of the jade lion, as if using it as a model.
“Among the spoils was a large wooden horse, which the prince’s country brought back to the city as a trophy of their victory against the alliance. However, the wooden horse was hollow, hiding soldiers of the alliance inside. Utilizing the night, the returning alliance, with the help of the soldiers inside the wooden horse, opened the city gates and ultimately won.”
“So you plan to hide Anna and Lili inside the jade lion?”
“Just following in the footsteps of our predecessors. I believe even the most cautious guards wouldn’t shatter a gift for the Third Princess without solid evidence.”
“Good idea. But a gift for the Third Princess being a hollow jade lion…”
Lady Chris implied Enrique was being too bold by cutting corners.
But Enrique seemed even more pleased.
“I unconditionally support the Third Princess’s marriage to the Garuda Kingdom, so why would I present such a subpar gift? It’s actually made of inferior materials, crafted to imitate real jade convincingly. Masters with advanced appraisal skills can discern its authenticity, but I’ve already investigated, and there are no such talents at the checkpoints we’ll pass. Once we leave Obey, whatever happens en route is entirely up to me, right?”
“Uh…”
“You see, how unfortunate. The jade lion we offered to the Third Princess, due to a rush and the carelessness of clumsy servants, got broken…”
Lady Chris was speechless. Enrique, indeed, was a man of meticulous planning.
In this way, no one would suspect anything, and Lili could be transferred out this way.
Once away from the densely populated city, Lili would be temporarily safe.
“Time is money, please, Anastasia.”
Enrique said, opening the switch on the jade lion. There was a small
opening just large enough for one person to pass through, and the space inside could accommodate two adults at most. It was perfect for hiding the most conspicuous Lili and me.
The only downside was the size of the entrance. I gestured the size of it and then looked down to measure…
“Sorry, Lord Enrique, can I use a spatial transfer skill to get inside?”
“…You really are something else.”
