Chapter 75: Time for Payment.

The wall was finished.

Levi stood at its edge as morning light stretched over the swamp, casting long shadows along the curved stone. Even from here, he could see the faint pattern of moss-streaked slabs creeping along the half-paved road that cut through Bogwater. Each trench now bore signs of purpose. Order was taking shape.

He didn't smile. But he felt something stir—like the faint taste of victory, or maybe just control.

The knock on his door came not long after.

Ulrich entered without a word. His boots were muddy, his beard uncombed, and his eyes as unreadable as ever. He held out a hand.

Levi didn't hesitate. From a pouch beneath the table, he placed the silver stag coins—carefully counted and bundled with cloth—into Ulrich's hand.

No questions. No thanks. Just a nod.

Levi nodded back.

"Only the paved street now," Ulrich said. "Then the houses. After that... this town's got what it needs."

Levi looked at the man, arms crossed. "Agreed."

But the moment he allowed himself to breathe—to savor the progress—the second knock came.

This one slower. Measured. Familiar.

Levi opened the door and there stood the old maester. Bent at the spine, but with sharpness behind those gray eyes. Unlike last time, he did not carry scrolls or parchment. Only that gaze—one that spoke of decisions already made.

Levi didn't invite him in.

He came anyway.

Ulrich grunted. "I've got work to do." And without another word, he stepped outside and shut the door behind him.

Levi watched him leave, then turned to the old man. "You're here in person. That usually means trouble."

The maester didn't smile. "It means there are... consequences."

"Consequences?" Levi leaned back against the table. "For what? Finishing a wall?"

The maester gave him a long look. "You don't build walls like that and still call this a village. Not in the North. Not anywhere."

"I never asked for anything from anyone," Levi said quietly.

"Yet you went to them," the maester said. "To House Reed. You were acknowledged. That acknowledgment may have spared you taxes—for a while. You were small then. A village might survive with leniency. Might feed itself and ask nothing more of the realm. But this?" His hand swept toward the window, toward the rising roofs and creeping stone. "This is no longer a village. It's becoming a town. And towns... pay."

Levi said nothing. His jaw clenched.

"They'll want silver," the maester went on. "Or men. And they'll have the right to ask. Because when you went to House Reed, even without kneeling, even without swearing, you made your place known."

"I stood with them because I had to."

"Then you'll pay for that choice now," the maester said.

Levi stood up calmly" I will pay what i have to"
