Chapter 42: Hero Time
"We should start looking before those two get their hands on this element," Max said, urgency in his tone.
"Yes, indeed. Following the protocol of the Galactic Code of Conduct, we will act accordingly. Tiny, launch observers one through four," Ultimos ordered. Tiny pressed a few buttons on the control panel, and their ship released four drones to search for Six-Six and Volcanus on Earth.
"The observers will scan every inch of the city and locate those ruffians in no time. In the meantime, how about a tour?" Ultimos suggested, causing Gwen's face to light up.
"We'd be honored," Max replied.
"Apologies, but the Galactic Code of Conduct clearly states in Provision 373-837: no civilian visitors in secure areas of the ship," Ultimos said.
"Well, that's one hell of a way to shut us down," Fred muttered as Ultimos took Ben and left the three behind. The lightbulb alien showed a glint of smugness as he looked at Fred while passing by.
"First back on Earth, and now here too. Ben gets all the cool stuff just because he has the watch," Gwen sulked, feeling envious.
"Right, that reminds me," Fred said, handing Gwen another bracelet adorned with intricate carvings and gems. "Push down the red gem, and a list will pop up, showing magic books from basics to advanced. Select the book you want to study, and it'll appear," he explained.
Gwen's face lit up. "It has more features, but you'll discover those as you learn more magic," Fred added.
"Magic, huh," Max muttered, remembering someone from his past who had pursued the path of magic.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Gwen asked, noticing Fred at the control panel, placing a flat box resembling Upgrade's body part on it.
"Nothing much," Fred said, pulling a hologram from his bracelet and typing something. The others found his behavior suspicious, and they were right. Fred was copying their data to his personal servers. Although he had access to Plumber information through his badge, it was limited. Using the Enforcers' credentials, he copied as much information as he could.
Fred was also searching for clues about his parents' death but found nothing. He clenched his fist in anger, then took a deep breath, calming down as he pocketed the device. "Still nothing..." he muttered softly.
Soon, an alarm rang in the ship. "What did you do?" Gwen exclaimed.
"Relax, it wasn't me," Fred replied. Moments later, the Enforcers and Ben rushed in. "Nice clothes," Fred remarked sarcastically, seeing Ben in the Galactic Enforcers' attire.
"The observers have detected something," Ultimos announced.
"Wait, that looks like a strip mine. Is this Bicenthium alloy iron ore?" Max asked.
"Worry not, we will handle it from here," Ultimos said, as he and his team, along with Ben, prepared to head to the scene. "No offense, but please wait here. The Galactic Code of Conduct doesn't permit us to engage villains along with civilians," Ultimos added. The lightbulb alien included Fred, trapping them in a telepathic barrier and teleporting down to the mine.
"Well, that was rude," Fred remarked.
"So what will we do?" Gwen asked.
"We'll observe for now. We can use Fred's teleportation magic if needed," Max said as they watched the battle on the screen by the control panel. It didn't take long for them to notice the Enforcers were losing.
"That's not good," Fred said.
"At this rate, they'll never win. Fred, can you take us there?" Max asked, pressing a button on the bracelet Fred gave him, turning it into a laser gun.
"Sure," Fred replied, transforming into a Kryptonian with the classic red and blue suit and the S-symbol on his chest. He pressed a button on the panel, teleporting them down in front of the Enforcers and Ben, who stood next to a weakened Ultimos. Hovering a few inches above the ground, Fred stretched his hand towards Ultimos, forming a magic circle that healed him.
Fred then flew off, meeting Volcanus with a punch so hard it bent his suit sideways like an L as he crashed to the ground. "Fred!" Ben called out in his XLR8 form, standing between the restrained Tiny and the knocked-out lightbulb alien. Fred focused his gaze on Six-Six, firing his heat vision and knocking him down. In a flash, he stood before Six-Six, holding him by the head and crushing his helmet until he was unconscious.
"That's how you do it," Fred said, turning back to look at the Enforcers.
"Thank you for your assistance," Ultimos flew towards Fred, expressing his gratitude. "I think you should restrain those guys first," Fred suggested. They freed Tiny and helped the floating lightbulb alien, who was still shaky but recovering.
"We appreciate your assistance. And also..." Ultimos began, approaching Ben and Fred with an offer to recruit them. The two declined, though Ultimos gave them their symbol, saying the door was always open.
As they teleported back to the rust bucket, Gwen asked, "So why'd you turn them down?"
"I'm better off by myself, thank you. Besides, I don't think I'd last being with weirdos," Ben replied, jumping onto the couch.
Gwen's expression fell slightly, disappointed by Ben's attitude. She sat down and started scrolling through the list of books Fred had given her.
"Huh, what's that? Can I see?" Ben asked, curious.
"It's none of your business," Gwen replied, turning away from his pestering face.
Meanwhile, Max started the rust bucket and set out. "Where are we heading next, Grandpa?" Ben asked.
"Just be patient," Max said as they left.
Fred, sitting at the front, seemed to be wearing a sour expression. "Something wrong, kiddo?" Max asked, noticing his demeanor.
"...It's nothing much. I guess I need some sleep," Fred replied, his voice subdued.
The journey continued, with the rust bucket traveling towards their next destination.
