Chapter 38
"So fast!"
In the blink of an eye, Lock closed the distance. Oluo's pride vanished as he braced against this "too-young" opponent.
A recruit chosen by Captain Levi isn't ordinary… he realized, adjusting quickly.
Lock's strike came fast. Oluo dodged nimbly, countering with a heavy punch. Lock met it head-on.
"Good—just what I wanted!" Oluo thought, moving in. Still too young… no combat sense.
But the moment their fists met—
Bang!
Oluo staggered back, chest aching as if he'd been hit by a charging bull.
"What strength—!" he grimaced.
Petra, Eld, and Gunther froze in shock.
The squad's strongest fighter after Levi—knocked back, forced on the defensive.
"Are you kidding me? This brat's like Levi's clone!"
"No wonder he joined the Corps at fourteen."
"When I was fourteen, I couldn't do a tenth of that…"
"Petra, maybe you should just stick to looking pretty," Gunther muttered.
"Tch. Gunther, if I recall, you've been on fewer expeditions than me."
"…Don't sweat the details."
Meanwhile, Lock pressed forward relentlessly. His fists and footwork never slowed, like a machine without limits.
Oluo gritted his teeth, trying to seize back momentum, but every attempt collapsed under Lock's raw power. He was overwhelmed, forced backItep by step, until finally—
A sharp punch drove him to the ground. Oluo crossed his arms, bracing for the finishing blow.
But it never came.
Opening one eye, he found Lock standing over him, smiling faintly, hand extended.
"Old bird, I win. Remember—my socks for a month."
Embarrassment flushed Oluo's face. The thought of washing a rookie's socks was humiliating, but he still muttered:
"Hmph. I was careless. Don't think you'll be lucky twice."
Despite the words, his doubt faded. Lock's strength was undeniable—unnatural for a fourteen-year-old.
No wonder the captain took him in. Kid's a monster.
Petra and the others approached, eyes on Lock.
"Lock, that was amazing," Petra said softly, blinking in surprise. She had always thought Levi unmatched, yet this boy—only fourteen—stood out in his own way.
Eld and Gunther shared the same look.
Lock had earned their recognition, at least for now. But true trust would come only beyond the Walls, where training meant nothing if you couldn't prove yourself in battle.
Still, his talent was obvious.
Carrying that sense of responsibility, the squad led him to the armory. After fitting his gear and uniform, Lock was officially welcomed into Levi's squad.
Next came the final test: 3D Maneuver Gear.
As with every recruit before, Levi's squad gave their "welcome ceremony."
At the abandoned building behind the base, Lock and the others launched into the air, darting between walls and rooftops.
He was the runner; they were the hunters.
But no matter how hard Petra, Eld, Gunther, or even Oluo pushed, Lock slipped free again and again. His control and speed were flawless.
Only when all four were nearly exhausted did they finally give up the chase.
Breathless, they looked at him in awe.
So young—yet his talent was undeniable, carved into every movement.
