Chapter 24: Hallowmere Reclaimed
The wind at Hallowmere always screamed.
Even in daylight, the sun rarely touched the ground. The soil had turned black with ash. Charred trees twisted like begging hands. This was where Kael had made his greatest mistake — where they fought, fled, and left too many behind.
Now, he returned.
Kael stood with a small unit at the edge of the ruined valley. Behind him:
Serana, leading the vanguard
Nilo, carrying arcane instruments
Vaenira, silent as shadow
30 soldiers, handpicked, many of them orphaned by this very battle
Before him: graves. Hundreds.
But something was wrong.
Some graves were open.
And not dug by shovels — but from the inside.

Descent into Silence
Nilo stopped near a broken monument.
"This was the command circle," he said. "Where the first prayer barrier fell."
Kael remembered. So much blood. So much fire.
He knelt and brushed aside the ash.
Beneath it: a sigil of the old gods, half-burned.
He cursed under his breath.
"They were trying to protect this place," Kael muttered. "We failed them."
Vaenira tapped her blade on a stone.
"No," she said. "We didn't fail. We were betrayed."
Suddenly, the air turned cold.
The birds fled.
The soldiers drew swords.
And from beneath the earth…
they rose.
The Remnant Rise
The dead clawed upward — not mindless zombies, but reforged warriors.
Eyes glowing. Faces familiar. Some called Kael's name.
"General... why did you leave us?"
"Kael… come back…"
Their voices were fractured, broken between memory and magic.
One of them — Captain Meras, Kael's former shield-bearer — stepped forward.
Still wearing Kael's old sigil.
He raised his blade.
"You were our leader."
Kael stepped forward. No sword.
"I still am."

Kael closed his eyes… then dropped his sword.
"Stand down," he ordered. "I'm not your enemy. Zerath is."
The Remnants staggered.
Confused.
Meras trembled. "He told us… you abandoned the light. That you let us die."
"I did," Kael whispered. "But I came back for you."
Silence.
Then— Meras lowered his sword.
One by one, the others followed.
Nilo rushed in with binding stones, whispering rites.

Meras' Last Words
As his eyes dimmed, Meras reached out.
"Don't let him… make gods of the dead."
Kael grasped his hand.
"I won't."
The light vanished from Meras' eyes.
This time… for good.
