Reincarnated as Itachi Uchiha at the Start

Chapter 76: Uchiha Itachi [76]

Uchiha Clan Compound.

Banners lined the streets, each one emblazoned with new academy slogans:

"Strict standards in policing, strict standards in education."

"Honor the law, value virtue, pursue knowledge, enforce with strength."

"Loyalty and truth, unity and resolve."

"Sincerity and fairness, diligence and discipline."

"Serve the people with loyalty, grow through study."

"Cultivate both character and skill, master both pen and sword."

"Value the law, apply what you learn."

"Write to uphold justice, fight to protect peace."

New applicants filled the roads—hopeful recruits lining up to apply for auxiliary positions, temp jobs, and school enrollment for their children.

"Yakumo," a stern man said to his young daughter, "learn well from Mirror-senpai and Instructor Mizu. No slacking off."

"Yes, Father," said Yakumo Kurama, bowing respectfully.

"In the past, our Kurama clan was once a prestigious name in Konoha—equal in strength to the Uchiha. We produced many elite jonin and chunin. But as fewer of our bloodline awakened the kekkei genkai, we faded into obscurity."

"But now, Clan Leader Itachi Uchiha has personally recognized your genjutsu potential. He's offered you a full scholarship, with direct instruction from Uchiha tutors."

"You must seize this chance. Make our clan proud. Understood?"

"I understand, Father. I won't let you down—and I won't disappoint Principal Itachi either," Yakumo said, bowing again.

"Good. Off you go."

He watched as she entered the Uchiha Police Academy before quietly turning away.

"Hi, I'm Fū Yamanaka, from the Yamanaka clan."

"I'm Torune Aburame, from the Aburame clan."

"My name's Shin, and this is my little brother, Sai."

"I'm Urushi, from the Konoha Orphanage. My mother, Nonō Yakushi, sent me."

"Thank you. Please sign in and collect your registration forms. Once you complete a physical exam, you'll be eligible to begin tomorrow," said a polite Uchiha staff member.

"So this is the new Uchiha?" muttered Tsume Inuzuka, leading Akamaru and a pack of recently born nin-dogs. "New clan head, new energy, new academy… Hmph. That Itachi sure doesn't do anything halfway."

"Miss Tsume Inuzuka, welcome," said a young Uchiha woman. "I'm Harumi Uchiha. Clan Leader Itachi asked me to escort you. Please follow me."

"Oh—thank you," Tsume replied quietly, trailing behind. Wasn't the Uchiha clan supposed to be arrogant and rude? This girl's downright polite… Was that all just rumor?

Well, if Itachi's this gentle and respectful, how bad could his people be?

Clearly just gossip.

Uchiha Training Grounds.

"Shisui, I've found you a disciple," Itachi said casually, sipping his tea.

"A disciple?" Shisui Uchiha blinked, confused behind his dark sunglasses and black mask, his clan robe shifting in the wind.

"Genjutsu: Demonic Illusion—Tree Binding Death!"

"Genjutsu: Triple Sakura Mirage!"

"Illusory Seal—Vision Binding Technique!"

"Her name is Yakumo Kurama," Itachi said, nodding toward the training grounds, where Kurenai Yuhi was furiously casting genjutsu at empty air. "She's gifted. Her kekkei genkai allows her to manipulate all five senses. It's said she can construct a genjutsu world with her imagination—and whatever occurs within it can become real, as long as she wills it."

"She can paint a scene and manifest it. Heal someone in an illusion and cause real recovery. Or inflict real damage."

"Huh. Sounds a bit like your Tsukuyomi," Shisui said, stroking his chin.

"...Yeah, kind of." Itachi frowned slightly. His Tsukuyomi inflicted psychological damage—no physical harm. But if he could integrate Yakumo's ability...

He could turn Tsukuyomi into a world where the pain was real.

"…I'm leaving." Itachi stood and immediately walked off.

"Ha! I win! The Uchiha aren't so great after all!" Kurenai Yuhi laughed triumphantly at nothing, her left hand miming a chokehold, right hand pressing a kunai to her own chest like she was reenacting an invisible victory.

Shisui watched silently for a moment… then snapped his fingers.

In an instant, Kurenai's illusion crumbled. Her victorious scene vanished. The laughter died in her throat.

When her vision cleared and she saw Shisui standing nearby, arms crossed and smirking playfully, her face flushed crimson.

She'd just spent over ten minutes talking to thin air.

She hadn't even realized she was under a genjutsu.

Utter humiliation.

"Kurenai Yuhi. Special Jonin," Shisui said dryly. "That's it?"

Then he turned on his heel and walked away.

"You—!"

"How dare you insult me like this!"

"Unforgivable!" she snapped, launching another attack from behind.

"Itachi once said, 'If a ninja fails with a single strike, they should flee a thousand miles.' You're a genjutsu specialist—your strength lies in misdirection and surprise. Charging in head-on like that is pointless."

The illusion before her dissolved—and Shisui appeared behind her, kunai pressed coldly to her throat.

"You lose."

"So fast!" she gasped. Her strike had landed on a decoy!

That Body Flicker Technique was unreal.

The kunai shimmered with chakra at her throat. Not just speed and genjutsu—this man had at least one elemental transformation, too.

Elite Jonin level, no doubt about it. And he was here… working as a schoolteacher at the Uchiha academy?

Kurenai swallowed hard.

"…I lost," she admitted through gritted teeth.

"Mhm." Shisui put away his kunai and casually shoved his hands into his pockets. "Then go home and wait for the results."

If it were before, he would have treated her gently, but Itachi said he needed to change his personality, so he had to adopt a distant, cool demeanor, abandoning his warm-hearted approach.

"…So I failed?" Kurenai muttered.

"Technically, yes." Shisui paused, still facing away.

Her shoulders sagged. She was a Special Jonin, and she couldn't even pass an entry-level test for a local police position?

Was the Uchiha clan really this strong now?

She was about to leave when Shisui spoke again.

"But I'll give you a chance as an auxiliary officer. If your performance meets expectations, I'll recommend you for a permanent position."

"Or… if you don't mind, you can be my secretary."

"…Secretary?" Kurenai blinked. "You're a street officer and a teacher. What do you need a secretary for?"

"That's right," Shisui nodded, serious as ever. Itachi said: 'Let the secretary handle your tasks. If there are no tasks… handle the secretary.'

He genuinely believed Kurenai's genjutsu potential was excellent. They could spar in private. It would count as developing village talent.

"…Alright. I accept," Kurenai said. His technique is the real deal—and it matches my specialty. Training under him wouldn't be so bad.
